Re: Prometheus: The Eternal Wars

@cw: The problem is, that Jack doesn't care what his hosts do. And after all I have heart yesterday, I have to fight the urge to write a file, that would constantly ping the server of that game. If someone donates money to the game, only to get kicked out by hosts, who were probably envious of someone else's abilities to actual code something, says a lot about these hosts. It makes me wonder, on what conditions Jack chose his hosts. Did he just take the first few persons, who logged into his game? It's actually really sad, because Prometheus had a lot of potential. But Jack needs to take his hosts  on a much shorter leash.

Re: New computer, what should I go for, mac, windows etc

I just sold my soul to Apple for one of their MacBook Pro models.  A 15-inch machine with a 2.8GHZ Intel Core I7 processor with turbo boost up to 4.0GHZ, 16GB of SDRAM, and 512GB of SSD.  That, my friend, runs near $3,000.The reason why I'm investing in one is because I'm an Apple mobile user, so integrating a computer machine would be efficient for my mobile devices (my iPhone and iPad).  Being able to install a version of Windows makes it all the more worth it, so having a machine dedicated to just Windows isn't necessary, but it is good to have a backup.I'm a music editor and recorder, so Protools, Garage Band, Logic Pro, etc, are such examples of programs only available and accessible on OSX.Macs actually don't lose their retail value, and quite honestly, the hardware is superior.  The processor power,
RAM, etc, is not part of the equation.  I think it's the actual build of the system.  The metal will survive for many, many years.  Countless users have reported just slowness of the machine after say 7 or more years of using their Mac.Luke

Re: Oculus Rift + 3D sound

You may find Peter Meijers work with converting images into sound for your applications. His program The vOICe takes an image and converts it into a sound using a stereo time step from left to right to determine a pixels horrizontal position, and pitch to determine a pixels vertical position, with volume representing brightness, effectively conveying an image to users (it works best with Depth Maps of a given space). He's currently working with members of the Raspberry Pi community to create a device to help better enable the visually impared to navigate environments using The vOICe connected to camera mounted sunglasses to take and convert images in front of them, complete with pattern recognition TTS descriptions of objects. The application could potentially work just as well for virtual environments as physical static environments, and
would likely be easier because virtual data could be parsed as a depth map more easily. If your interested in what that sort of application might look like, I have a 3D minecraft prototype with a Sonifier implemented available in my respository complete with source here, as well as Python versions of Peter Meijers available source code here and here.

They aren't really targeted as such, I.E advertised like that, but they are in terms of quality similar to most business cklass laptops if not better.Of course I have never had anything to do with a business laptop or such so I wouldn't know anything about them, but people around me that have had a mac have used the things for ages and ages, that too without issues in which I often tend to run into on my windows macchines after 2 or so years.Say what one will about apple being a tad bit steap when it comes to pricing, but imo you get what you pay for. you pay high but you do get quality.Has anyone used asus machines? if so, how good are they? I know this tends to vary on an machine to machine, but generally len
ovo has been good for me, sept in recent years. and they do work, but they aren't something I'd call long lasting.grryf

Re: does anyone know of any good browser-based empire building type games?

Hi all, I've played a few of the games mentioned above, and they all have their good points. But the game I'm currently hooked on is Utopia.Utopia is one of the oldest running massively multiplayer online browser games. It is a real-time strategy in virtual persistent online fantasy world withPlayer versus Player and Team versus Team interactions. The Game uses a text user interface. We're roughly in the first month of age 68, each age lasts about 12 to 14 weeks, and after that there's a freeze time where new kingdoms are formed and disbanded, or not, and you get a fresh start on making your province better. Or, choose a different set of race and personality.By all means, read the getting started links on the Utopia wiki I provided further down.Link for the main site where you can create your account and begin creating your province follows.http://utopia-game.com/The link for the Utopia wiki is below:http://wiki.utopia-game.com/index.php?t … topia_WikiEnjoy!

Re: libaudioverse crashing with reverb?

Okay. Good news. I found and fixed the problem.  As usual it was both trivial and stupid.  In order to get you a fix as quickly as possible, my CI server is building 0.8.3 for you now.  Unless something goes wrong, you can pip install --upgrade libaudioverse in about half an hour after I post.I was also right. Replace default_panning_strategy with panning_strategy and HRTF will magically start working.  The manual is outdated.  Given that one of the things that I have to do in the next couple days is read the entire manual and fix a bunch of stuff for 0.9, I'm not going to fix it for 0.8.3.Basically I changed how default_panning_strategy worked to be convenient, but you don't need to worry about the details unless you need to make some sources not HRTF.Sorry for the inconvenience.  I try to catch as many of these as I can, but sometimes they slip through.

Stewie: Thanks, I'm glad you're liking it! Luckily, the changes already are open source, as Nethack did indeed have a public repository. I'll post a link to my public repo, right now since I'm still in the process of conducting my study I'm not making more changes (for the sake of my study results being useful I need to try and make sure everyone answering is playing the same version of the game), but when the official study is over I'll likely make a few more improvements based on suggestions and then hand it off to anyone who might want to keep improving it.https://github.com/apepers/NetHackYes, it is a bit annoying that the tile information text is part of the same text as events and things. I wasn't able to find a way around it, though it sure would be better that way!firefly82: Thank you, I love these games too Sure, the dirlook command is actually not quite as helpful as that unfortunately, but the way that it works is that you type #dirlook and then it will prompt you to give a direction to look in, and then it will tell you how many tiles away the nearest wall or unexplored tile is. So if you are in a room like so:#..[ a-t ]..#And do #dirlook to the right, it will tell you the wall is 3 tiles away. I do know that Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup's autoexplore is very useful for navigation, I kind of wanted to try and find a way to make navigation easier without making it quite that easy, but maybe it would be worth doing in the future. You might try out Nethack 4, which is a fork of Nethack that has an auto explore function, as well as some other changes.I actually thought that playing sounds in Nethack wasn't a working functionality anymore, I played with it a bit but couldn't get it working and it seemed to not be
used very much. It might be that I was wrong, I'll have to look into it further!

Re: Beyond the Bullet (for those who want to play)

@26, yeah, that's... er... about what happens. Colton is not our caretaker. He doesn't pay for our care, doesn't put our food on our table. In other words, no. We don't have, to except what Colton Hill, brings to the table as far as games go. If he wants to give it to the blind community? Then you best bet! It is at least partially about what we want. How in the lord's name do you expect people to download something on their machines that they don't even really want, and give it a good review because "Someone was kind enough to take pity on us and create this lovely little thing"?  All I have to say is this. If you want to be a game developer, @Colton and anyone else who thinks everyone should put their foot in their mouth and just shut up so they don't offend him, here's how I see it. Of course, because I'm an insignificant teen, just 1 out of 7 billion people on the Earth, most of which probably got it down more t
han I do, I might be completely wrong. But you have to take it both ways. Do you want just praise and no "destructive criticism?" Keep the game for yourself. You'll have zero players and zero supporters, but hey! No offending words that hurt your feelings, which seems to be the taboo of today's generation by the way. Or, release the game, gain supporters, actually regard what the community says instead of stomping around snatching for pity and telling us all to shut up and be grateful, and maybe just maybe... oh just maybe you'll be just like Aprone, Danny, Sam Tupy, and the other successors of late.  Oh wait. No never mind. We're all just haters on Colton and hold infinite grudges, so everything he develops is regarded with enmity. But why, of course? Colton's done nothing wrong...*hits submit and goes to a class on how to be nice to people... everyone else with an opinion feel free to join me.

Could you explain how to use it?I think i will play this for a very long time if i find out how to manage the navigation stuff. For example i liked crawl stonesoup very much. This crawl had a autoexplore feature. Yes, i know this makes navigation maybe too easy. Re: Beyond the Bullet (for those who want to play)

I have just read the rules that the moderator put up, and judging on them, I have reached this conclusion. I clearly understand that Mason, in terms of his games, has the complete power to determine if clones of his games are prohibited or not, after all, I do believe that is why the world invented copyright back in the 1800s, as I believe it was established. However, I am sure that no developer wishes to have their games and software cloned. Why, given that matter, is there not a rule determining that making any program using any part of other peoples code is against the rules. Also, if such a rule was created for the forum, would people still be allowed to make fan based games of the devs projects? After all, the sighted community used to see an abundant amount of megaman fan based games, such as the 8bit megaman7 and 8. I would also like to clarify that, if a developer wishes to put no clone rules into effect on their game, then why don't they just put that information in
the licence agreement? You would save yourself a lot of trouble that way. And now, the elephant in the room. Now, before you guys stroll passed this part of the post, hear me out for what I have to say. I want you all to think about this. Do you guys know why Colton helped make this clone. Because, from his very first game, target, some of you guys, and I'm not pointing fingers, nearly because I don't know anyone to point at for an obvious offender , but some of you people, used destructive criticism against Colton. I can tell that at least 1 person has done this for 2 reasons. 1, because colton verified this himself, and 2, you did the exact same thing to Manu when he released his first game, accept during that time, someone was there to defend Manu because he was a developer who was first starting off developing. With Colton, nobody seemed to care that this was his first project, you show no appreciation for what you're given, you only care about what you don't
have, and that makes you selfish. So Colton decided that he would develop a clone of UP. Now do not think that I am supportive of direct clones, because I'm not, infact I am full fledged against them. However,he decided this is how he'd try to win your respect. And low and behold, you guys weren't supportive enough to encourage him, or at least to dig himself out of the trap that you guys seemed to have forced him into. It shows that no matter what Colton develops, or modifies, or tries to make, he is constantly criticized by the members of the forum because it doesn't matter what the game has unless it contains things that the blind community wants, if this is not the case by the way please inform me, but that is what it looks like. If this is the case, I can't believe what I'm seeing. What happened to the forum that I used to be fond of, the nice helpful people, the drama free topics, what happened. I'm beginning to see that it's not just t
he forum, but the whole world that is becoming like this. People only support something if it has what they want, not for the hard work that the dev put into the project, or even having the thought of the dev not making the game because he wants to play it, but because he is attempting to obtain happy customer. Why can't we improve in that way as a whole. Like techmaster20 stated, we need to stand together as a family. A family would help each other out when ever they can, and support each other all the way. And if we can improve in that way, then maybe we can make this a happy place. Please do not lead the ag.net forum down the road that klango went. Thanks for reading this post, I hope you take this to heart, and further more, I hope that this topic is closed.

Re: Entombed: Glory to the Thief

The reason light damage or 1 damage is killing your character, is probably because of the bug with transformation. I've heard of a bug where if you transform into an animal with animal form, you won't be restored to full health until you level up. If you don't want to restart, just use your goblin thief as a character that takes the damage for you. Just keep picking "defend" for every turn for that character. If you give your goblin thief the legindary swords, that might help depending on what weapon skills you upgraded.

It would be very cool to have the games without the hardware based registration. I realy like treasure hunt, TDV i haven't played so extensively but it sounds great as well. Hmm, probably he could sell the key generator as well like bsc-games, but that depends on what he wants to do with the games.

this is an awesome project. the changes do work particularly well and you can get information on what is around you. Is there the possibility of making your changes open source? I was thinking you could fork the official (if there is an official nethack Github repository.)I noticed that the lines of text giving information on nearby tiles appears on the same line as other event text does, so it does not always show up. I don't really know what you can do about that though.

Hi!@Centauri:I notice this everywhere. I persue music production as another hobby and have been doing that for a few years. You do notice an improvement.Same for my games. I definitely learned a lot from RTR. That was probably the project I'm most attached to just because I liked the way it turned out. And that's what it's all about. Right?@Burak: No. I shared it. People can make suggestions, even add features and I can pull them into the code and make it a more community driven thing.I'm getting a certification in programming so I'm definitely not going anywhere. I might just not release and update games as much as I want to, especially in the coming few years, since I'll be putting a lot of time and dedication into that first. But I'm ready to learn and experience.

Re: Second Castaways 2 public beta

[[wow]] I started pretty late on this game.  I tried single player a few days after it was publicly available and played for a few minutes but everything was just taking too long.  Now I've given it another try and I love it.  Things don't really take that long after you have more people doing things, and the amount of jobs and the detail put into them is amazing.  I would love to see one thing though.  Would it be possible for in-game sounds to play while working in another window?  while playing single player, I have a  tendency to set a few jobs, then work on something else and check back on the game shortly afterward, but I always end up forgetting and lose 20 minutes of time or so.  This isn't a problem now that I'm playing single player, but I plan on getting a kaldobsky gamer account sometime soon and that would be very helpful when playing multiplayer.  Anyway, love the game, and thanks for putting so much ti
 me into this.

I haven't used Unity, but I do use C#, the .NET Framework, and Mono.Unity is built on top of Mono, and you might already be using C# inside Unity.Making calls to the Tolk TTS library from C# is not difficult. They have already built a C# wrapper around their native dlls, and have some sample C# code to show how it is used.I'm happy to help you figure it out in real time if you would like. That said, if recording samples is easier, then you should certainly stick with what gets the job done since you are just prototyping ideas right now anyway.

Re: Prometheus: The Eternal Wars

I stopped playing roughly... a munth ago? Yeah. Roughly Give or take a week or so. after my friend was kicked off the hosting team for reasons that seem to change every single week since afore mentioned crap happened. That friend was one of the few compitant coders left and has spent a lot of their time instructting others on how to do things as well as contributing money to keep the damn game running. The game has several flaws:1:Missions are stupidly easy as mentioned above by burak. It basically comes down to a button pressing fest Fly to place, type commands til thing dyes.2:Attempt to do any kind of beyond the norm roleplay, and your either going to get clubbed by a host with the rules, or some player will complain endlessly behind your back about what your doing til something in the games policys get's changed so that your not meant to be able to do that thing. See: human pyrian hybrids.3:Most of the hosting staff are flat ou
t terrible. One member has been on their for over 2 years, has no idea of what a property is, what a verb is, or anything moo related accept the demote command. Get this, this person has full wizard status and could easyly break the game at any time with their imcompitant bumbling. They are not above leaking former hosts contact details over public channels then attempting to say it was a mistake also .4:The UTF are massively overpowered. They can and have fined players for not refering to them by their ranks over public, informal channels. They have abused host powers to lock down ships that they have no IC way of being able to access. They were also in the process of restoring themselves to their stupidly overpowered days when I left. As I type this, every UTF ship probably has it's autodetonate console back.5:One host is playing through the game with his own host char.  With host created ship with host powers. If he decided to go on a rampage,
everyone would be screwed. 6: the announcements in post 629. It's all about the restricting of players these days I guess.I'm not doing this to be a dick, I just want potential players to know what they are getting into. It was a good game once, that time is not now.

Hi, again.I've posted a test environment that you could try, if you like. The link is at the end of this post.Once you unzip the file, you will get an exe and a data folder. If you run the exe (radarscan.exe) you will be presented with a menu asking about your screen settings. You can skip through it to the play button. When you launch the game you will hear a sound sweeping around you. That is the hum from the sound-emitting ball tracing the shape of the buildings that surround you. What you are hearing is not a recording. It is a dynamically changing 3D sound being spatialized by the realspace 3D audio plug-in. To exit, just hit escape. Here's the link to the 28 MB zip file:http://medievalist.net/radarscan.zipGlenn

If you don't like the goblin thief or any other characters you have, just start a new game. Also, what job would go good with a shamen as a first job? I've unlocked the goblin, and yes they're very weak. However, I'm thinking that I'm gunna make my own goblin king from the Goblin Stronghold, and fight with the actual goblin king. Of course mine won't be as strong because it won't have the legindary swords and armor, but it will after the fight. If anyone knows about the differences between the axes and large axes skill, I'd like to know what each of them are for. What I mean is that I think "large axes" is for great axes and battle axes, and "axes" is for hand axes. However, I heard on the Entombed google group that "large axes" was only for great axes and "axes" was for battle axes and hand axes.

Hi and welcome to the forum.  Nethack access is something of a bug bare sinse while the game is all text, hearing your screen reader saying "dash dash dash dash dot at dash dash hash t dash dash dash bar" isn't too informative. A braille display can help (for those who have them), though sinse a braille display only displays a 40 or 80 character line (and costs a bomb), even then screen review of something as complex as most roguelikes is a tortuous business. Then again, I'm fairly suree access could! be added by a few informative text messages and directions as to what is where, so I'm really interested to try this project out as having full access to as venerable and complex a game as Nethack would be great.I am however having a miner problem. I'm afraid the download link is not working, I get a dropbox page with a "download" text but clicking on it does no good and for some silly reason I can't sign in to drop
box either. could you please post a direct download link to the file?Sorry if I'm missing something.

Hi.@Severestormsteve, yep that's the show. I really miss the older episodes from the 90s and early 2000s since they don't show them on tv anymore. You can get the new seasons on iTunes but never the older ones. I've thought about petitioning fox or spike whichever one owns them now to release the older ones for everybody. I watch  it on tv and my girlfriend gets tired of it she tells me I don't need to watch it 24-7 lol.@Ishan, well maintaining a relationship with a girl is easy as long as you are good for each other, have things in common, things like that. It's easy to meet girls just go out somewhere where girls are like a coffee shop or something like that. Sometimes you get the wrong one but other times you get lucky and find someone who likes similar things and is nice. For example I met an old girlfriend at a breast cancer relay for life that my aunt forced me to go to. She was really nice and sweet but we didn't have much in c
ommon she was a little too dramatic for me everything would turn out to be a crisis. My current girlfriend is very nice and we like a lot of the same things music, tv, star trek, which is nice. She's very easy to talk to and I write songs for her to play for her on the guitar.@Dark, thanks for the advice. I used to sprint when I was on the track team in high school but I'm not sure I have it in me anymore lol. I love lifting weights and running but I didn't know that helps your lung capacity. Peter Straub is great his books have really terrified me. He and stephen king wrote a couple of books the talisman and black house which are awesome fantasy novels in my opinion. I'm not sure what you would call them the talisman they wrote together years ago and then black house is the sequel. Straub and john saul are 2 of a kind. John Saul is great but I don't know what happened to him he's just stopped writing which is a shame. All of his books are good an
d scary I just wish he would write some new ones.

Lone Wofl with modern software?

2016-05-19 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Locutus via Audiogames-reflector

Lone Wofl with modern software?

Hey guys,Question for you all. I recently decided to dig Lone Wolf out from my virtual game shelf and make a fresh mod for it... Which is all well and good. Problem is, when I went to try and play it, I found that Jaws didn't read any of the various status messages. Has anyone tried playing the game with Jaws 17? If so, is there anything I should do to get it to recognize game output? It sure would be nice to play this game again...Best, Albano.

Accessible Nethack - A Research Study

2016-05-19 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : apepers via Audiogames-reflector

Accessible Nethack - A Research Study

Hello,I’m a student from the University of Calgary, and I’ve been working on a research project investigating how roguelike games could be make more accessible for visually impaired people. I’ve created a version of Nethack which has had changes made to try and make it more accessible, and I’d like anyone interested to try it out. This Dropbox link contains the .zip file for the folder which has the game (runnable on Windows), and also contains an “README” file which explains the accessibility changes in the game, as well as license information.https://www.dropbox.com/s/biwnbu1xv4i4g … k.zip?dl=0I’m also conducting a survey to try and learn if the changes were actually successful and how they could be improved. If you do play the game, please consider taking part in this short survey. Your responses will be confidential, though the online survey is being administered by Google Forms™, an American software company.  As such, your responses are subject to U.S. laws, including the USA Patriot Act.  The risks associated with participation are minimal, however, and similar to those associated with many e-mail programs, such as Hotmail™ and social utilities spaces, such as Facebook™.I'll post a link to the survey in a second post, since I'm only allowed to post one link per post.If you have any questions you can ask me here, or email me at ampep...@ucalgary.caThis study has been approved by the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board at the University of Calgary.

Re: libaudioverse crashing with reverb?

Hm. Yeah. I think the docs are outdated.  I'm about to go over them with a fine-toothed comb for 0.9 and it shouldn't be as much of a problem going forward.  0.9 is also going to start making backward compatibility guarantees (i.e. no more changes like this).  For what it's worth, the node reference is always up to date.I still haven't run your code yet, but I promise I will.  It's probably still present.  Going to master is currently...difficult.  Building Libaudioverse is a horrible, horrible experience on Windows.  If you're not already set up for it then it's going to take 4 hours minimum just waiting for installers.  If it comes down to it, I'll make a point of getting you a wheel manually.Libaudioverse runs on Linux currently, but this support is immature due to lack of testers.  Alsa might as well be undocumented, so it probably breaks hard for surround sound configurations wh
ich I can't test due to lack of hardware or space to put said hardware.  You have to build Libaudioverse on Linux yourself, but it's easy, unlike windows.  If you need to package the Linux version with whatever the equivalent to py2exe is, that might be difficult.  I'll work on it with you if that's the case.Mac is coming.  Mac has made it up the to-do list to something that's kind of high priority.  I can't provide a timeline because it's going to be somewhat significant effort for reasons, but say sometime in the next 2 months?  If more people start needing it urgently, it of course becomes higher priority.Getting the branch switching thing to work more easily is on my to-do list.  One of the things I have to touch for 0.9 is the CI servers.  I haven't because testing the CI configurations has a 20-minute or more turnaround time, so things that should take 10 minutes end up taking an enti
re day.More info in a few hours.  I've got some other things going on and can't sit down and look at this closely at the moment.

Re: Second Castaways 2 public beta

I totally agree, this game is really a lot of fun, and I'm not normally a fan of sitting and planning things, I'm more of a shooter.    Aprone, how about a way to dig down into a mine, so from a 12 you could perhaps hit enter and it'd drop you down to a13 which is directly below it.  Or perhaps the iron and metals could respawn after so long, and that could be a new perk, the dirt could come back and you'd need to tunnel into it again to see if there's anything there.  Also, I was looking at some of the previous posts, and I noticed one where you are concerned about the game being not as successful because of the amount of players on line.  Maybe having the ability to reset a plot if you're not happy with it would be a work around?  Also, never think of your work as being a flop, this sort of game takes a hell of a lot of wor
k to code, and unlike a lot of game developers who promis the earth and don't deliver, you've proved time and again you aren't one of the lazy ones, by delivering top quality games and great support.  From Lori.

@post 9:It is common for audio platformers and top down games to have key strokes map to specific distances (such as a single tile), but first person games don't always follow this trend. While first person games usually support turning with the keyboard, more modern first person audio games also support turning with the mouse, as seen in Swamp, or turning using the gyroscopes and accelerometers in an iPhone, as seen in Papa Sangre 2 and Audio Defence.Personally I think that adding head tracking as a form of input would be a great advancement for blind gaming. And as you say, it doesn't need all the extra hardware required for stereoscopic vision, which could keep the cost much lower.Aprone, one of our sighted developers, actually made an attempt at such a device in 2013.He called it the See Munkey and was selling it for about $50.Unfortunately it never performed as well as he had hoped.  Whether this is due to the Math he used to convert the raw data from the gyroscopes and accelerometers into actual yaw, ptich, and roll, or because the hardware used was just not up to the task, I couldn't say.Specifically I think there was too much drift, much more than he had anticipated. He no longer sells the device. If you are curious you can read a summary and FAQ about it here:https://p9.secure.hostingprod.com/@www. … evices.phpOr read the developer's manual here:http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiodevices/d … anual.htmlI own a See Munkey and would be very excited to see something similar to it become polished and more widely used among blind gamers. But I do not personally have the hardware or math skills to make that happen. We do get something kind of close by being able to turn our bodies while using an iPhone that uses the gyroscopes and accelerometers to detect turning, but a head tracking device would be more accurate, and make more sense with being able to look up and down.If you do not have TTS working yet, I recommend the Tolk screen reader library:https://github.com/dkager/tolkIt provides support for the major screen readers on Windows, and is LGPL.Regarding what kind of sound cues would be most helpful for your 3D space:  This is not a solved problem, so exploring this with your own ideas and posting your results is helpful to all of us.Since most of my work is on 2D planes, I don't have much to suggest, sorry.Edit: Just for clarification, Tolk supports screen readers when they are running, but can fall back to SAPI which is built into Windows, so it is a good TTS solution all around.Blind users prefer screen reader TTS over SAPI, but SAPI gives sighted developers a good way to test TTS without needing to install a screen reader. If you did want to try a screen reader, I recommend NVDA which is free:http://www.nvaccess.org/

Re: Oculus Rift + 3D sound

Am I correct that the usual way to navigate in a virtual 3D game space designed for the blind is for keystrokes or mouse clicks to map to specific distances or rotation angles? I get the impression from what I've read that it's common for a key-press to rotate the player thirty degrees, for example, or for a single key-press to move the player forward one unit. Is that true? Personally, I think it would be very difficult to keep track of the direction you are facing in the space, if you have to count your rotation clicks and just imagine turning. That's why I imagine head-tracking would work better. If I'm right, it would help to have a device that did nothing but track the position of a user's head, without all the more expensive and technically challenging hardware required for stereoscopic vision.

I thought the resulting chord might communicate the angle of a wall, relative to the player, for example. I will have to try doing something like that, now that you've suggested it might work.

r not, and how you installed it.  The easiest answer is that it's outdated and this is something I fixed at some point.  Some of your code appears to be written for an older version of the library, but there's currently enough changes pending for 0.9 that I can't remember for certain if I released that version or not.Other than that, I'll update and run your code against the current development version sometime today and see if I can duplicate it.  This obviously needs to be fixed before 0.9.  0.9 is going to be a large release for a lot of reasons, and I want it on the big mainstraem places like Hackernews. On the off chance that the answer is yes, do you have and know how to run cdb or another debugger capable of working with VC++?  I don't expect this and setting up for it is very hard if you haven't already, but if you already can then it's not necessary for me to be able to duplicate the bug on my machine
to find out what's wrong.  Duplicating it locally is by far the easiest avenue, but C++ is such that this isn't always possible.

Re: Oculus Rift + 3D sound

The first solution that comes to mind with the issue you're having with not being able to give the tester a sense of the building's size or shape would be to do something similar to the following.1. Have the rod be extendable to a set distance in front of the user. 2. Whenever any part of the rod touches something it plays a combination of tones to create one sound. It doesn't have to be a looping sound; a quick blip would suffice I think.3. This blip would be composed of two tones, one high, one low.4. The low tone would give the tester a sense of how wide that particular wall is, because it'll run a loop to determine how far it is from each edge horizontal starting from the spot where their rod hit the wall or object. This data will be used to change the pitch of this low note depending on where in that horizontal line the rod falls. The high note will be exactly the same as the low note in mechanics, except that it would represent the
vertical measurement.5. The combination of these two tones will create a audible cross-hair and will allow the details of the oddly shaped structures you'll more than likely be recreating more fully appreciated by those without sight.6. Have the tester be able to press a control to have the blip play repeatedly if the rod is already in contact with the object. This gives them more control over how much information is being given to them.Hope this helps.

Re: Second Castaways 2 public beta

After playing the multi-player game for a while I've discovered a few things. When my mine ran out the game stopped for me because I couldn't buy the iron and copper I needed to make the things I had to make to help my second plot or protect my first. So perhaps having more minerals in the mines or a way to dig deeper with other tools would be great. Also I had a merchant cart stolen from me and I had no way to make another since I had no mine. So perhaps making it harder for someone to steal something that took a lot of effort and matterials to make would be good because it sort of just stopped my progress.Anouncing what our thieves take would be a great adition as well. Also I put cotton seeds up for sale for 300 coins earlier tonight and I see the 1000 coin cotton seed is up there now but my money has not increased. Maybe a bug?Now is the money on both plots supposed to be the same?I also noticed that we can't buy things made from
our other plot, is that on purpose?I agree with Laurie, it would be great if we could opt out of the PVP stuff. Now, on my second plot the apples immediately went to 1 food energy, which was my only way of getting food except for spear fishing, which had brought me to zero food and I am waiting for my apple tree to grow. That was my fault I didn't manage it well. I had planned to send them supplies but I waited a couple of days and my cart vanished.I think if the guard tower protected more than the square it is on, that would be good, maybe two squares all the way around it, since it is covered by a bowmen and really there isnt' anything in the tower to steal. If the theif was more precise it would make it better. For example, if it hits a storage shed it could probably steal food, the stable a horse, a pig pen a pig, the mine gems/minerals, that sort of thing rather then just randemly giving stuff up. So for them to steal my cart they would have
had to land in the workshop, that sort of thing. I know that sounds like a lot of coding!I love this game but I am at a point where I can't do anything now. Too broke to buy anything and no mine to mine anything. I do have six horses though. LOL I haven't had so much fun playing a game since the first castaways.Thank you for all your work. This game could go mainstream very easily and sell for 20 bucks easy. IMO.Oh yes, I loved the making clothes feature that was up for a while and the steam stuff. Also can we paint our houses! That would be the best.I play single player all the time and hope it gets an upgrade too.Brilliant piece of magic you have given us.One more thing, I get something about incorrect prodical once in a while and I have to close down and restart it.A

Re: Oculus Rift + 3D sound

Thanks for all the responses. A similar post to the Oculus forum received no responses at all.It appears that you don't mind long posts on this forum, so I'll respond at length.First, I am not a game developer. I am an educator. I use the Unity game engine to teach ancient Roman and Medieval art and architecture. I use it to give my students some sense of what it would be like to experience foreign or ancient cities and buildings in person, that is, to experience them in their own bodies. I've made a medieval monastery, a Roman city, and various other things. Lately, I've started making these same virtual spaces compatible with the Oculus Rift. That makes the experience, for sighted people, even more convincingly real, and makes their experience even more of an embodied one, since, instead of using a mouse or a keyboard to look around, they move their head and body, just as they would when looking at the real world. The reason why I started
worrying about how these virtual spaces might be made accessible to the blind is that I was reminded by my university that any digital content that I make for my students should, if possible, be accessible to those with disabilities (including blindness). That's a requirement of section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I couldn't imagine how I might do that, at first, but then it struck me that the combination of spatial sounds in Unity, and the head-tracking capabilities of the Oculus Rift, might make it possible for blind students to get some sense of what was going on in my virtual architectural spaces. Over the past few months, I have been testing ways of accomplishing this goal.I have been using the Realspace 3D plug-in for Unity. It seems to work really well for spatializing sounds in the virtual world. It does employ HRTF convolution to achieve its effects. I have been using an Oculus Rift (DK2) because I have one, but a cheaper head set like the G
ear VR could also work. Either one is a bit of overkill, when used by a blind person, because it's only function is to track the position of the player's head (that is, the direction the player's "gaze").I wrote a couple of simple, game-like tests, and had some blind volunteers try them out. The first just tested how well the combination of spatial sound and head-tracking worked in terms of localizing sound-emitting objects in a virtual space. I put the players in a large open plaza, and had a sound-emitting object appear somewhere in that space. The players had to locate it, relative to their bodies, and then signal to me that they had found it by turning their head to face it as accurately as they could. As soon as they were confident that they were looking directly at the object, they clicked a mouse button and another sound-emitting object appeared in a different place. This went on for a total of twelve rounds, using a variety of different sounds
, with me timing how long it took to find each object. That test went really well. All the testers found every object quickly, easily, and accurately. It seemed to be as natural for them as finding sounds in the real world. The second test I did used something more like radar or sonar to scan a collection of buildings in a virtual city square. In this case, I modified the standard Unity character controller so that a ray extended away from the player's face until it hit something in its path. I attached a sound-emitting ball to that ray, and located it at the point where the ray intersected any object in front of the player. I told my testers to imagine that they had a long cane with a sound-emitting ball on the end of it, which they could extend straight ahead of them until it touched the wall of a building. They could then trace the ball along the wall of the building by turning their head to one side or the other. If the building was far away, the sound would sound far
away, and if the building was close, the sound would sound close (because the sound was a spatial sound). This experiment did not work so well. As a sighted person, I imagined this would work great, but my blind testers did not find it as effective as I'd hoped. They could tell if there was a building in front of them or not, and could get some sense of whether it was close or far away, but they had trouble determining the size, shape, and orientation of buildings just on the basis of the sounds. I also found that the testers were not naturally inclined to scan their heads back and forth. The only one to do that was a tester who had lost her sight only recently. These tests were designed just to determine if I could communicate to blind users how buildings were arranged in an architectural or urban space. It did not include things like the names of buildings, or information about the buildings, or verbal instructions about where to find the buildings. Nor did it provide
natural spatial sounds that might have made the spaces sound more real. All of the

I am not saying that all of the hosts are problems, but part of my problem is figureing out what the unspoken rules are, or at leasts for the hosts... Hi,I  wouldn't consider 3 years as being long lasting, as that's what my laptops usually last for. 3/4 years, and even then after the 2 year mark they start having issues and things need to be replaced/repaired.That must be some machine you got there, laptops lasting 8 years, with nothing still wrong with them is unheard of. At least I haven't heard of such a thing, specially a non apple computers.I did look through a few machines but all of them or almost all of them have a U processer,ug.So trying to see if I can actually get a i7q at $800 900 or so, if not that then a processer that isn't a U,at least.

Ok. Guys, can you please, please stop all this childish behavior. The unity of this forum shouldn't be shattered over a reserected prodject that wasn't authorized by Mason, Colton, or the forum's moderators. UltraPower is dead, therefore it should stay as such. The practices of the person behind the Blinkwizzard account are questionable, in my opinion. All this drama must stop. This forum is about playing games, and sharing games. The likes of those few people who would rather spread drama, termoil, and havick upon the forum aren't  helping. Guys, we need to stand as a family. Flaming, banning for very minor reasons from games, for things that weren't ever specified in a game's policies, I'm pointing to Survive The Wild, need to stop.  I see no problem with using people's source code, but when that person specifically says that they don't want people using it, as it was stolen from his posetion, that should be respected. Mason
made money off of it, to an extent, and has the right to sue anyone who uses his code, as he never gave thwm permission to use it. On the subject of whether Colton is worthy of access to this forum, well, you shouldn't compare yourself to someone. Maybe you're not able to code. Different spokes for different folks, as they say. There's no reason for anyone to want to be like someone else, to the point of getting angry because they can't acheive the same success at one activity, as someone else.
