Re: Books by Stephen King
Re: Books by Stephen King Okay I've read a couple more stories so thoughts coming up. Mute: I liked the initial setup of this one, particularly with it being a confession about a confession, and us getting almost three separate scenes, Monette confessing to the priest, Monette bitching to the mute hitch hiker in the car, and the story of his wife's affair and financial shenanigans, also credit to King for creating a wonderfully human and down to earth catholic priest for the guy to confess to, someone who obviously has dealt with a lot of people and heard it all before. The problem is that this didn't really go anywhere. As in 1922, it was the story about a rather nasty guy with a rather nasty wife, indeed the guy's self justifications were about as pleasant to read as the details of the wife's rather casual affair and remorseless gambling, this made the payoff super pointless. By the bare way the set up was done it was obvious that the mute would not be quite as deaf as the guy thought and the wife (and possibly her lover), were up for the chop. This meant when I heard the hitchhiker had tracked them down and beat them to death with a pipe wrapped in a hotel towel my initial thought was more "oh that's an interesting method of murder," than "oh god someone has just been killed" or even any feelings about Monette's situation. This one really needed a sting, a bit of calmer, for Monette's response that he ws glad his wife was dead to cost him something, indeed I wondered if the hitch hiker might go and murder Monette's daughter, (his love for her was really his only redeeming feature and while that would've been a nasty ending this is a horror story after all), or maybe that the "company" the priest mentioned having for lunch would turn out to be the hitchhiker who'd just heard monette's confession and was rather anoyed about being tattled on, but no, ding dong the witch is dead, hurrah for homicide. A long story whose end was obvious, and which just plane lacked the surprise it ; should've had, and whose main character was almost a total arsehole. Not good. Iana: definitely the worst story in the collection. King's blind child was so ridiculously overthetop it made me wince, (even at seven being asked to count steps out loud would've made me feel stupid), and the girl falls over the IV stand, just to make sure we all know how weird and blind she is. Of course she has magic powers, because blind people, particularly blind children are wonderfully strange and otherworldly and do strange magical blind things. I've seen reviews that criticise john Coffee in the green mile and Mother Abigail in the stand as being "magical negro" characters, that is black people who have mysterious magical powers from being so otherwordly and dark skinned. I never felt that way about either, since both are also shown to be very human characters who have their own struggles and I loved both, indeed the major point in the green mile is how poor John Cofee's magic powers get him into trouble for just trying to help. In this story though, Iana is literally called "the magical negro child" by the main character's cynical wife, I'd add blind onto that description too and you pretty much have a walking cliche, particularly with shock horror, the fact that at the end of the story the main character is told she's dead, because magical blind angels obviously need to go back to heaven where they belong. Apart from her, the premise of the story might've worked, I got a clearer idea of character here, and credit to King for creating a spiky wife who was cynical without being repellent, also his descriptions of sickness were sort of irreverent to the point of almost surrealism, I also liked how the father who was sick was actually shown to be a real person, indeed credit to King on hitting the contrast between someone very ill and the person they were (which makes his magical blind person even more obviously a major misstep). Even the idea that the power gets passed on, and people get the power to heal others, which had he executed it differently could've made for a genuinely appealing story of miracles, especially with the guy not able to heal his sister in law's Alzheimer's couldn't save this one for me.Btw, when I mentioned this one to my lady, she said she'd actively repressed memory of it, and that King really fails with blind people, like Dyna in the langoleers, yet another magic blind girl, which makes me interested to reread that one as well and see what I think of it now.Next up is the narrow place, which I believe my lady has mentioned to me before as a wonderfully icky premise which I'm quite looking forward to. Re: Audo saving your game in BGT? If all your saving are a bunch of numbers, here's one way to serialize them into a byte array you can write to a file:Pseudocode:procedure encode_number(number: integer, bit length: integer) # This will not work with 8-bit integers. uint8 bytes[bit length/8] for i = 0 to bit length / 8 exclusive do bytes[i] = ((number >> (i * 8)) & 0xff) end for return bytes end procedure procedure decode_number(bytes: uint8[]) # This will return an unsigned 64-bit integer. Re: sixth sence
Re: sixth sence Ok, here's the complication concerning SixthSense. It was technically a free to download game, so distributing the IPA would be totally ok. Patching it to run on 64bit? Grayarea, but I blame Apple's closemindedness for artificially disabling 32bit support in the first place. The problem with SixthSense is who knows if you could still get coins to play the game. Coin in-app purchases most definitely would not work. You got one coin every 10 minutes, but how it got the coins is a mystery to me. Now I wish I had turned my wifi off to see if the game's coin reload was internally done. If the game calls the server to reload the coins, then the game is toast no matter what you do. This, persons and other persons is the very reason the app store needs to no longer be the primary means of distribution. Sure , people could say it's only a game, but goodness knows this could have easily happened to a business application or something to that effect. Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay
Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay @Ethin: he doesn't need a mutex on counter. I'm assuming that code is its own function in which case there is no sharing of state there. You don't need to make counter reside in global scope for this. So the code is thread-safe.As for the first point you mentioned, he can wait on a notify event that will block the thread until the screen-reader starts speaking. So the function can provide a guarantee that once the code enters the loop, the screen-reader has definitely started speaking so there's no race condition to contend with.My original point still stands though: that of timing. Even with 10 ms delay, it's theoretically still possible to incorrectly state that the screen-reader has finished speaking. Any type of delay-check-delay-check pattern on periodic data runs this type of risk, and vocals are definitely periodic data. Re: skype account issue: forked
Re: skype account issue: forked The only issue with split screen, which I'm sure will get fixed eventually, is that when you're in a conversation, if you leave the window open for awhile NVDA tends to lose focus, and no matter what you do you can't read the most recent message that was sent unless you close and reopen the conversation. Since this is much more preferable to dealing with lag, not to mention I always liked split screen view in Skype 7, I don't mind it that much. I also agree with others who are skeptical about this forking crap. I can't believe people are still talking about it, seeing as how I didn't even think Skype 7 was usable anymore. not to mention that I never even heard of forking until a certain subset of this community started talking about it like it was some sort of plague that was going to destroy us all, but whatever. Re: skype account issue: forked
Re: skype account issue: forked I wish, but no it was not. To reproduce, here's a short description: Make sure you are in focus m mode, browse mode probably does the same but just in case since that's how I mainly use the app. Press alt 1 to go to the recent chats list, and press enter on one of them. Normally it should open right away, but now it takes up to 10 seconds to open, during which keyboard navigation is completely unresponsive, and on lower configurations it kills all speech. As for chat lag, it happens when reading a large group and when the screen needs to scroll. It's essentially the same tipe of lag, just slightly shorter. Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay
Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay There's still a race condition in there. Since you can't synchronize that looping thread and the screen reader reliably, this situation is very possible:1. Thread runs: screen reader is not speaking. Waits 10 MS.2. Thread runs 10 MS later. Just as thread checks peek, screen reader starts speaking just as the peek function returns.3. Thread receives incorrect peek and increments counter. Also, your above algorithm is not written idiomatically. It would be better to write:int counter=0; while (counter <= 50) { if (GetScreenreaderPeak()==0.0) { counter++; } else if (counter!=0) { counter=0; } Thread.Sleep(10); }And reading over the algorithm, I just noticed a possible infinite loop. Its a good idea in theory, this algorithm, but it undoubtedly will not work (neither the infinite loop idea or the idiomatic approach). The reason is your timing -- your waiting 10 ms between checks. Your condition, if counter != 0 counter = 0, is going to occur far more often than your counter increment code. (It would also be hard to apply this algorithm, not just because its not thread-safe, but because you currently have no way of determining if its safe to proceed and speak. Even locking the counter with a mutex/RWLock is insufficient to solve the second problem. If you check the counter, your speaking will be incredibly sporadic; if you check if the thread is running there's a higher chance the speaking will never occur than it actually occurring.) Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay @20: regarding the peak tracking algorithm, I would myself take different approach. Not because of half second long words, I don't think something like that could happen, although it is possible in theory. But rather because 500 ms is very long time, and if your first stop is in half of its value, then secondone will be 750 ms from speech's end, and will jump in these values. Thus to prevent that long pauses, I would do a single WaitForSpeechFinish method, which algorithm would be as follows:int counter=0; while (true) { if (GetScreenreaderPeak()==0.0) counter++; else if (counter!=0) counter=0; if (counter==50) return; Thread.Sleep(10); }This should solve all problems discussed above, long pauses as well as short words between checks.Best regardsRastislav URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/460531/#p460531 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay
Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It seems like some of you have gotten it to work reliably for determining if a screen reader is speaking, though I'm getting pretty accurate timings with the solution I've currently got, especially once I wrote a function to convert numbers to words which was the biggest problem I was facing since one number like 1600 counts as one word unless it's explicitly converted into words. Of course now the issue is localization since I'm only accounting for English number to word conversions. Any ideas on this part? I've been unable to find a C# number to word conversion library and don't want to bother with writing my own complex localization code if there's a library out there that already does this. The main reason I don't think I'll be using snvol is because of the purposeful delay to check if the screen-reader is still speaking. It smells of race conditions as in this example:1. Check the volume.2. If it's 0, assume the screen-reader has just paused and wait 500 MS.3. If the volume is above 0, go to step 1.4. If not, the screen-reader is finished speaking.Assume here that after your 500 MS delay you happen to check the volume while the screen-reader has taken another pause. You will incorrectly determine that the screen-reader is finished speaking. Re: Empirically setting a screen reader delay @18: I have adressed that problem in the pause between sentences section, it should work quite reliably. It's not very surprising as recognizing by the audio's peak is the same what we humans do to determine if screenreader has finished its session or not, so if the peak information is available, there is no reason why it couldn't be done by computer.Of course as I stated before direct support from screenreader's side is the best option you can have, however when this is not available and can't be added for example due to closed source code, I personally consider tracking audio session peak much more reliable than relying on a statistical words per minute calculation.Best regardsRastislav URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/460527/#p460527 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: I don't understand, please help? bgt code
Re: I don't understand, please help? bgt code by default, dlg has 2 strings, a title and a message. If you are still getting errors, it is because you only put one string instead of 2. I modified the script to only need one string. I also made a default timer the user can set that will auto scroll the message. For messages you think will be longer than what they would set the default to, I added another variable called extend, and when those messages come up, they have the extended time before autoscrolling. This is the best solution I have found for using text with a screen reader.
