Re: Java programming language and audiogames.

Hello everyone! As promised, I am ready to share my first game with you! I specify immediately that it is a very simple game, but for me it was the first experiment to try the java language and solve the different problems that presented themselves. The game is, as I predicted, the popular paper, rock and scissors game, which I reworked. In fact for the course it was requested to program this game, but in a dos window, without sounds, without any interaction with the keyboard.Clearly started the game first in text form helped me to think about the mechanisms of the game.I went further. I added the interaction with the keyboard, the sounds and the speech synthesis! The file you will download is a zip that contains an exe file, yes you heard it right! In fact I used a program called jar2exe, which by the way is very accessible! In addition to this there will be the java runtime folder, which is about thirty mega! Yup! Here too you heard right! In other words things have improved a lot compared to a few years ago. In fact using jdeps you can understand which java packets are actually needed for that application, and then with jlink you create the custom java folder. From 300 mb to 30 mb there is a big difference! In short: the archive that you download does not require any Java runtime installation, or anything else!At this point good download, let me know your opinion, and please, be good ... It's my first game, but I did my best to make it interesting!https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uHRp38 … sp=sharing

Okay, I finished life, which wasn't half as bad as I thought, am also now at highest zone 133 hurrah! though I admit part of this was me having to be places earlier this week so letting my trimps just farm maps and push a bit further on, still I got a big dump of helium which was good.Since then I've been running the meditate challenge 2 to see if I can raise my attack a bit before I try some of the tougher ones like mapocalypse, Slow or scientist V, since I don't want to be caught out the way I was with frugal.Actually I'm thinking about doing a second run of life just to make sure I'm as tough as I need to be, as well as make sure I have enough helium since I know from looking at the wiki that the perks from mapocalypse and coordinated are expensive ones, and in general with trimps a bit of consolidation never hurts.

Hi All,I have to put in a good word for the Master of Orion Strategy Guide, available for download here. Despite the fact it's got OCR issues, it's a treasure trove of information about the way the game works. The info I got about spies recently came from there, among other things. In some ways I'm not sure how much of it I want to read, as it's rather spoiler heavy, but still, if you're interested in playing this game long-term at all, it's invaluable.

Re: Books by Stephen King

Re: Books by Stephen King

Well today my lady and I finished reading needful things. We'd had some extremely bad news last week, and needed something really engrossing to read together, and its one my lady's fancied doing for a while, not the least because the audio version read by Stephen King is one of his best, with King doing a great job of the readings and some wonderfully ironic musical themes used for each character. So, thoughts in coming, as are spoilers, stop here lest yee wish to be spoiled! It's odd. On the one hand the book is extremely slow, there is a massive amount of setup as you go through each of the town's residents individually with gaunt selling them items and demanding tricks, and everyone getting increasingly possessive about the things they by, even as you learn their backstory. I will give King credit in creating a lot of very well rounded characters, some of whom, we even ended up feeling sorry for inspite of ourselves, some of whom we loved to hate (Wilma Jersic reminded me of a very nasty downstairs neighbor I used to have). and I liked the fact that the catholic/baptist disagreement is over something so petty, and also the fact that not all sides are quite equally responsible for starting things off (the catholic priest came across as a slightly less rabid person pushed too far). Some characters were exasperating at points, EG Sally the perfectly virtuous and self righteous girl with her nice but dim boyfriend, who at the same time really didn't deserve the tricks played on them or where they ended up, though in that debarcle the one I really felt sorry for was John, the poor cop who got beaten up and nearly killed. That being said, all this comes at something of a cost, since there is so much setup, you know thing are going to go to hell, it's all a question of who, and how and where, and while I won't say the book dragged, I did wonder when King was going to get to the point. It's rather like eating a really huge shepherd's pie. You start off with the mashed potatoes on top. The mash is nice, it tastes good, it's well seasoned, but you want to break through into the bit underneath, particularly because you know that mash would be even nicer when eaten along side the stew.Spending so much time around the town was also slightly detremental for some characters like Polly and Brian we actually wanted to see a little more of, indeed, while I know part of the point of the story was that everyone had their buttons and secrets and issues, I do sort of wish we'd spent a little less time with scuzbags like Ace marrel, who did get a bit samy after a while. Oh and BTw poor Thad beaumont! I never realised his wife had left him and he shot himself, that is just down right depressing!it also might have been nice if the one black character wasn't a raging racist and the gay characters weren't both pedophyles either, though King actually managed to do something I didn't think possible and actually make two pedophyles commic relief, (I loved the phrase "you killed my parakeet and shit on my mother!"). I also liked the way in the final conclusion Alan's magic worked, which made perfect sense for Gaunt, though I do wish King had eased off on all of the "Demon begone, I banish thee!" type of stuff. Those sorts of poetic, power lof light triumphs endings work best when they're based around the characters, as in It, floating dragon or the stand, and worst when it feels more like something else doing the vanquishing and the characters are sidelined. So, whilst Alan and the magic, and even a couple of callbacks to The Dark Half and Cujo (which I haven't actually read), were okay, I did think King over did things a bit.I also have heard the criticism that Needful things is a generic King and just recycles a lot of his ideas, evil cars, small town rivalry with small town going boom at the end, conclusion where the powers of light do in the bad guy. I also see a few myself, Ace the evil greaser, Danforth the unstable nutty statetes man, the good natured cop, the spider scene in the bathroom etc. The problem is whilst this is vaguely true, at the same time this is Stephen King we're talking about. So often my lady and I would find ourselves laughing at a bit of gallows humour, sympathetic when people had aweful things happen to them, and genuinely creeped out by something creepy. Plus, King took a step here and actively shocked me! Since I honestly never saw Brian's suicide coming, and after that I knew all bets were off, so when we ran into things like Danford's murder of poor murtle they were genuine scares. I wouldn't say Needful things stands out as a King novel. Where Desperation felt like King having a go at a generalised horror novel, Needful things feels like King slightly resting on his laurels and doing what King does. The problem is, what King does is also a bloody good read and well worth reading! even aside from King's own wonderfully enthusiastic reading and the ironic music. So,

Re: Jaws keyhook

I personally don't like the idea of creating game-specific scripts. That can get messy especially if you're utilizing a framework and/or have multiple projects.Users have to copy the file, kinda messy. If you disable JFW's hook through jfwapi and your application crashes it can lead to annoyance especially for novice players.I'm not a jaws user so mileage may very, but my solution would be a low-level keyboard hook using the windows API. You'll have to call into user32 through ctypes, but from there it should be a matter of SetWindowsHookEx with a KeyboardProc. Return 0, passing all events back to the system. This is what BGT did under the hood and it seemed to work pretty well. If your application exits prematurely it shouldn't matter either.

Honestly it's ridiculous that the link isn't just freely available.  I doubt very much that it has anything to do with anti piracy, and sharing the links when people inevitably asked for them never raised any eyebrows in the past...

I believe this is a case where the link might've been incorrectly removed. AHC has online verification, so even if someone did have the download, they wouldn't be able to play it without a valid account and password, which can only be gotten via a game purchase. We've provided links to the download in the past in this very topic without issue from Out Of Sight.Kai

Had a similar issue with a Braille Lite 2000 many, many years ago. Was messing with a wordfix file trying to make it say something other than Braille Lite 2000 ready on startup, and ended up breaking things horribly so it wouldn't start. That night, I had a dream about being at school and asking another student who knew about the Braille Lite if he knew how to fix it. He said use an I cord, which didn't make sense to me.The next day, I asked this student if he knew how to fix it... and he fixed it. I asked him how, and he said he had to re-initialize it by turning the unit on while holding down an I cord.Needless to say, that was pretty darn freaky.

Re: Want to put your chiptune makeing to the test? lets go!

For me, sadly, MML is the only method I know to make music (including chiptune) without being a professional or decent keyboardist at all, and personally, it takes me a long time to do stuff like remixes; I even tried to compose an original music, but in all my attempts I have failed due to the lack of immediate feedback. My musical ideas go away when I'm setting up things (instrument mmacros, volume envelopes, choose FM instruments). I know tools for watch the MML file exists (MuMML, MCKwatch, etc.) but keep recompiling and seeking the song to listen a specific part is tedious for me. There's some commands in compilers that if you put it to the head of a line, you jump directly to that part when you compile it. Yeah I'm rambling about other things. Now about BotB.I've listened various songs by the artist and they are great. Even there's some articles regarding the use of specific trackers, MML compilers (ppmck is one of them), PMD, etc. But there's a CAPTCHA in the sign in page, without a possibility to access to an audio version of it. That was a year ago (IIRC) when I tried it. I don't know if that has changed. Maybe I'm more intimidated than @musicalman, who knows.

Back when I was ten, I got my first Braille 'n Speak with a spellchecker. I was on my way to school and I decided to read the spell.dic file, so I opened it, hit the l chord, and then the er chord to read all. Well, it did not like that and it crashed so hard that we had to send it in for repairs. Mind you I was knowledgeable enough about them to fix ninety-five percent of issues on my own by then.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

OP, I'm sorry you're having a tough time with your courses. I can speak from first hand experience that CS is very challenging, but very worth it if you can pull through. There are so many great job opportunities out there for people who obtain a CS Bachelors degree. I encourage you to continue. While I faced my battles with some courses and their accessibility, I must admit I was very fortunate to have professors who were very accommodating, and who very fortunately, chose not to use many of those online platforms. Also, I came in with a relatively strong programming background as I got hired right out of high school as a developer. I was working with Pearson to help improve accessibility of some products, but I'm sad to say they couldn't pay me enough to stay around. lol Again, I am willing to provide help or tutoring if anyone ever needs it in a number of subjects from Math to Physics to Electrical engineering to CS and others. Unfortunately, I am only available during weekends, but I can provide some help if anyone needs it. What are my qualifications? Well, just another blind stranger on the Internet with some xperience. Anyway, I hope you continue to push through, and anybody else, I wish you the best as well.

@Maranatà, as you are now claiming scientific authenticity, I request evidence from you. Provide us with evidence that has gone through the peer review process (and no, it can't be just one 'study', it has to be many, all agreeing (in one way or another) with each other). The evidence must be verifiable because rest assured that I, at least, will be attempting to verify your claim. If you fail to provide evidence than your claims will just be theoretical/hypothetical. Since yoru claiming that its scientifically credible, then it'll be deemed to be pseudo-science. And I, at any rate, do not like pseudo-science because of the extremely high possibility of spreading misinformation and, as a result, misinforming people who do not wish to (or do not know how to) verify those pseudo-scientific claims for themselves.Granted, logic is clearly indicating your BSing people, though I'd like to read your "proof".

However, dear brothers, if the astral projection is authentic, it is very dangerous.  Already there are ongoing investigations because several people who practiced it have died because of veins that burst in the brain.  And this thing is scientifically credible, in fact during these supposed astral projections the brain gets tired because it is not made to support such a heavy work.

But it is not they who do these things, it is the devil who is in them!  Trust your brother, it would be better for you if I never met them, I assure you that it is really scary!  However, the Church has already registered exorcisms, just look for them on Youtube.  And then the word of God often tells of these things, especially in the Gospels Jesus made many exorcisms.

Hmm, I've always been a little intimidated by Battle of the Bits. I looked at their site and didn't know really what I was looking at. Then again this was several years ago and I didn't yet have Discord, so maybe I'd be better off in the Discord chat rooms.Regarding help with PPMCK and Japanese tools, I might actually be able to help any of you guys with that or other chiptune stuff too. I haven't used every tool out there, but I've played with some of them, particularly the lesser known psg, wavetable and sampler-oriented ones. I'm not huge into FM so my experience with those chips and tools is more limited.

I wanted to be a DJ, and I figured I would use actual turntables.. I realized I was better at actual drumming, playing the keys, and that made me want to learn how to produce. I'm still trying to perfect my craft as a producer goes, but I still wonder how a blind DJ would do their thing. I work with a sighted partner, so I leap over obstacles when it matters most.. A few years back I tried asking blind musicians for advice, and got nowhere. I got the feeling they didn't want to see any other blind musicians succeed.

I wonder if anyone knows of a resource that describes the various non-alphanumeric symbols, such as those in code page 437 (character values 001 through 256). A lot of the symbols are undescribed by JAWS, and even less so by NVDA, so I have no idea what they are. I'd like to find such a resource since I'm trying to remap the NetHack symbol set so that all dungeon features have a unique character which can be redefined through the dictionary feature.I've tried to find such a resource via Google, but all I keep coming across are character code references, no actual character descriptions.Kai

It should, but my game still freezes every couple levels I complete. I do enjoy the game, but there are some issues that make the game play not as much fun.. After killing the three headed dog, I forgot where I last spoke to the ghost, and can't remember how to get back to the pool of water to retrace my steps. The "nothing else" thing is unhelpful, but it is what it is. haha I beat it once, and started playing again on mental autopilot. That one is on me.. I remember that you remove the candle with the tongs, send the troll away, and mess up the rug so he slips. You tell him somebody is calling for him so he leaves. Thats all I really remember..  The ending of the game was really anticlimactic do to the lac of sound affects.. It really needed some to make it impactful.

It's better that way so I can 1) get the credit, and 2) use the book for later reference. If you feel it's fine the way you have it set up currently, go for it. A hero's call, bizarre (and mildly amusing) game behavior.

Hi all,Was wondering if someone might be able to help me solve this very odd problem I'm having. I just installed A Hero's Call on my computer so I could have something to play while on a flight. However, once I got past the first battle with the wolves, to a point in the game where I could actually move about, I discovered that moving was impossible. For reasons beyond my understanding, it seems like the buttons to turn 90 degrees are stuck down. This effectively results in my character spinning like a top, and my being inundated with a constant stream of direction facing notifications. The keys for walking forward or back, or for sidestepping left or right do seem to be working. However, pressing shift+s or Shift+f does absolutely nothing to slow or stop this relentless spinning, and neither does using the mouse to change my direction.Using a fresh copy of the game hasn't helped fix the problem. Also, this issue is only happening on my second computer, a 2018 Dell XPS 13. When running the game on my Asus gaming rig, everything is running fine. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on?All my best,Locutus.

Running JUNIT test cases in the Terminal

So in my computer science class that I am taking in college, on the tests that are being taken, people are given IntelliJ on a Linux computer with JUnit test cases to check their code to see if it runs correctly. However, when I did run the JUNIT test case on the correct file, I was getting errors, even though on the same file, when I asked for input from a Scanner object, it outputs the expected output. I don't have the command that I typed in right now, but I'm curious if there is a reason JUNIT doesn't work.

Re: bgt, sorting number array from least to gratest

Agreed with @12. Radix sort is a non-comparison algorithm, which is perfect for what you're trying to do. It's able to sort in O(N) time, where N is the number of characters in your string. You're dealing with small numbers, so this isn't particularly inefficient. You can't get any better than O(N * Log of N) for any sorting algorithm, so this is second-best.Sorting algs can be fun to analyze. For your purposes, I'd take the Radix sort approach.

Warsim: The Realm of Aslona' 30% OFF @itch.io (must have for rpg fans)

Hey Guys,For those who know about Warsim, it's 30% off right now on itch.io, All support is welcome!Link here - https://itch.io/s/21932/halloween-sale-2019For those who don't know about Warsim it's a kingdom management game that was greatly inspired by Mount and Blade, Dwarf fortress, King of Dragon Pass, and the Elder scrolls series. It's still fairly obscure but has a 96% positive rating on steam from just over 150 reviewsIt's been in development for years and was built primarily to challenge a rather annoying trend I noticed in rpgs where you play as a king/ruler where you can't do very much at all, want to feast, want to kill your advisors, want to declare a law taxing people for breathing, or hire staff to run your kingdom while you gamble away the kingdoms gold on pit fights and snail races, In Warsim you can. Some of the games more notable features includeA huge world with 100s of unique locations including hidden cities, giant markets filled with tons of stuff to do and lots of randomisation and tons more.A throne room where you are tasked with talking to and dealing with or ignoring the people of your realm, depending on the size of your kingdom this could be 10 people or 1000s. You will encounter gamblers, bards, tricksters, goblins, mercenaries, common folk, beggars, and tons of others from a pool of 1000s of different dynamic encounters. You can of course just hire a steward to deal with the throne room for you however!A procedural fantasy race system that has been in development for years through a mix of my own work and lots of help from the Warsim community and now can produce exactly 75,066,204 possible races. Which pretty much ensures all the races seen in your gameworld will never been seen again. You might find Seafaring Goblins, Fire Orcs, Eyeless Elves, Orange Ogretaurs, Inbred Trench Dwarves, and millions more races you couldn't imagine!A dynamic arena in your kingdom where heroes rise and fall, there is much you can do here if you own it including hosting tournaments and setting rules. It can also be found in many states and sizesTons of mini games such as snail racing, a mini dnd game, animal pit fighting and at least 10+ others you can find in taverns and locations around the world, or you can hire a gamemaster to play them directly from your throne room. There are also absolutely abysmally terrible procedurally generated bards, including Goblin Drummers, Orc Grunters, Gnome Whistlers, and Vampyric lute players. I'm not going to pretend they are good but they are funny! The ability to send your men to find monsters from the depths of the world you can train and fight with other monsters, with 27'000 possible monsters and 45 different opponents. (this feature was player suggested)The ability to get absolutely hammered in one of the 15+ taverns of the world, my personal favourite being goblin taverns due to their 'vomit holes'If you're still here after that wall of text, thank you! I am a solo developer and have been working on this game for 4 years, it's sold just over 14000 copies but is still very obscure among the rpg gaming community and I am trying to slowly bring it out of obscurity. We have a great community here on audiogames on this thread with over 1800 replies - https://forum.audiogames.net/topic/1655 … -stratogy/Thank you for reading this, I am happy to answer any questions any of you might have!If you have the game already but think a friend might like it let them know!ThanksHuw Millward (Solo developer of Warsim)

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Ultimately, I keep pushing forward and not letting myself give into the struggle, but days like yesterday make me question a lot of things. The only real issue I'm facing right now is book accessibility, which I have resolved with the necessary departments, but it's coming down to how much time do I really have to play catch up? I imagine other blind folks' transcripts might have some spots where courses appear as withdrawn or failed due to inaccessible materials.@3, calc 1 is a hard class. I'm currently taking it as well, but this was a class that I did prepare for 8 months in advance. My prescription for any blind person is toA. Have a good Braille display.B. Have a proficient understanding of nemeth Braille.C. Obtain the book in Braille.D. Have a basic understanding of LaTeX.E. Have a notetaker (somebody who will sit in class on your behalf and take notes for you) who can produce those notes in LaTeX. LaTeX can be transformed into Braille using Duxbury Braille Translation software.F. Have a scribe (if you're lucky like me, your notetaker will also act as a scribe/proctor) to write down your work. Blind people waste too much time trying to write all their work down in LaTeX, and it's a real shame. You should only be concerned with your ability to do the math and not the ways in which you convey your work.I will tell you that it is precisely because of these measures I've taken that I am able to actively receive an A in the course. Admittedly, I struck gold with my notetaker. Not only does he act as a notetaker and scribe, but he is also a math major and has been a UTA/tutor for years. His understanding of the material is advanced, and so he's the perfect trifecta. All of these things are reasonable accommodations, and while others may interject and say that disability offices may not serve you well in your STEM field endeavors, there are laws and protocols set in place to ensure you receive these types of accommodations. This is where I speak firmly and forthright - you pay thousands upon thousands of dollars to be at your university, so you are entitled to advocate for yourself and receive the help you need, provided that it is reasonable.Perhaps what your comfortable with (Braille, MathML, etc) is different from what I'm comfortable with, but all of these formats are things. Things can be obtained. The abstraction here is that you reserve the right to receive whatever help it is you need, and classes like calc 1 are classes that really need this kind of attention well in advance. Believe me, I learned the hard way with every math course I've taken before now.All of that is to say I know exactly what position you're in. I've faced it and even face it now. I think the overall issue here is what others have said: you can't possibly know what to do or how to accommodate for a class you haven't taken yet. This can cost you a lot of time and money in the short-run, but as you advance through your academic career, it becomes an investment. I'm not that far off from graduating, and I do believe it is that fact that I haven't lost all of my vigor quite yet. If anyone ever needs to vent about anything related to this topic, feel free to do so here. I'm sure we all could afford to be heard and have others understand. I'm fortunate that there are indeed others out here that can empathize.

Re: bgt, sorting number array from least to gratest

Yeah. I'm more confused as to you the array is a set of strings. I don't know BGT myself (and I don't plan on learning it due to its discontinuation), but what you could do (if BGT supports this), is to first create that array using ints instead of Strings. This way, you could loop through the array, and sort via that. Then, if you needed to change it back to strings, you could maybe create a toString method.

Re: bgt, sorting number array from least to gratest

you could write a radix sort and this could work for both numbers and strings. Unless there is a specific reason that you have things as strings. Radix sorting is not fast though.
