If it helps, building a character in the tabletop RPG is also pretty crazy. The MUD is designed to emulate the rules as much as possible, so it's kind of confusing.

Hey,I'm glad you're enjoying it. The layout is definitely a little confusing, but most of the non-game parts of the UI at least have reasonably consistent structures. Things like drafts, deck editing, and so on are all handled in a similar way. There's definitely some room for improvement, I just haven't looked at the code for a while and am not as great with Java accessibility stuff as I wish I were.

Darin,Yeah, a similar process for selection as used elsewhere would definitely help, though I appreciate your explanation. While the screen reader isn't generally able to parse multiple columns in a super pleasant way, it at least helps me understand that the info is presented that way, and begin to make sense of things. I still haven't gotten Speakup going; my daily production machine is actually a mac with VOiceOver/TDSR, but fortunately the Arcane Fortune experience is reasonably good with that platform as well.I'm going to keep playing and see what happens. Is it okay if I share your project a bit more widely? I'm a member of at least one online community which would probably appreciate it.

Hi Darin,I'm back with another question. Thanks so much for your patience in putting up with the barrage.I'm confused by the tech tree, or at least how the keyboard is supposed to move the cursor around in it. I wonder if it would be any clearer with Speakup, I haven't had a chance to play the newest release  on Linux yet.I have played Civilization before with a friend, so the concept isn't unfamiliar to me, but that part of the UI is still a bit overwhelming. I realize you'd said that it requires looking at the color of items to get a full picture, and maybe that will help.I'm going to try and get Speakup going today and see if that helps clarify anything.

Darin,I wanted to drop by and aSk a quick question about city planning and such. How big is reasonable for cities? With the default scale of 5 meters per tile, it seems like the size could grow pretty rapidly. If a resource is, say, 900 meters away from your city hall, is it reasonable to exploit it by zoning from there or do you tend to build smaller? This question brought to you by logs in a forest. On a related note, I really like the zoom function. We don't usually see that in text-based games, and it's pretty cool to see how the map actually scales.

Hey,So I did some exploring of this with NVDA, and I'm left frustrated and confused.I believe that NVDA's console support is fundamentally broken, at least for screen-oriented programs like this one.It was difficult to reliably move along one row to see what was around me, let alone explore the rest of the game UI.I was trying to experiment with some commands to decide what moves the review cursor, but it was difficult at best.I don't think this game will be easy to play with NVDA on Windows, in short, not until its support for console-based programs is radically overhauled, which is going to be hard to do.I wish I had better news.

For the actual screen reader, I think that font size is a red herring. I’m not sure it matters as much as it does for sighted folks. I will try and play this weekend using windows and report back if I have any issues, but I would think that even if the menu item does not read, you can still read the current selection with the command to read the current line.

See some of my earlier posts in this thread for information on the screen layout. Good luck. frastlin,I've tried to figure out how to handle this, I admit. The best idea I had was to try and make each separate area of the display a tab stop, because otherwise you'd be tabbing past a ton of cards to get where ever you were going. That would require you to use arrow keys to, say, browse cards in your hand or on the field, which would need to be added. It's a lot of fiddling given the current structure of the codebase.

I decided to reinstall Football Fanatic on a DOS machine, just for interest's sake. It's complicated when I don't have much of an idea what's going on, but still fun. That does simulate penalty cards and a whole bunch of other stuff I don't quite understand, but it certainly looks comprehensive.

One thing which is missing from this game as far as I can see is upgrading your stadium, though it's possible it's on one of the other screens I haven't looked at.

I'm not very familiar with Java in large-scale code bases like this, the work I've done is very small scale compared to what would be ideal. That being said, there's a Forge Discord server where the developers hang out, and I'd definitely suggest anyone interested in the app join it. Here is an invite link for anyone interested. There is an #accessibility channel but it requires people with a developer role, I believe.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

vcaparica,I'm not sure about the latest snapshot, I believe that there's a bug in the automatic build scripts they use at the moment, so it's been a long time between releases. That being said, any future release will have the same accessibility improvements, as they've already been merged.I remember there was some confusion around how to pick cards for certain effects, as they opened windows without moving the focus to them. There are two UIs for doing this, as I understand it, one which is a little easier for us to use but less flexible.I'll try to address this at some point. It would help to know which spells you were having issues with so I can set up a deck with them.Glad it's mostly working well for you.

SubDragon,Glad you got it working. All I can say is that a lot of the opening UI, at least, is accessible with tab, and where it isn't you can use NVDA object navigation. You'll be doing that a lot in any case. There are basically two deck selectors, one for you and one for the AI. You can choose to get your deck from the program's list of pre-built ones, or from the internet, or randomly, or what have you. The button at the bottom of the window lets you start the game. There are also controls near the top for choosing a Draft game, Quest mode or whatever, but these are not in the tab sequence. You'll need to use object nav to access them.Hope this helps.

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

Hey,Speakup is a little difficult to work with, particularly if you try to use it while a GUI is running. This is because most modern linux systems use a program called PulseAudio to handle sound mixing, and speakup doesn't play well with this system. I recommend killing the PulseAudio daemon before you try to run Espeakup. More over, Speakup is a console screen reader only, that is, it won't work in graphical terminal windows. So to get Speakup working the sequence is something like this.1. KIll pulseaudio.2. Run espeakup.3. Perhaps load Speakup's software synth driver (mod probe speakup_soft). This may be done automatically, or could be done before you run the daemon, I don't know if the order matters.THis is all a bit far from the main topic, but if we can get some sort of Linux system for text games that would be lovely. It's hard to explain to people who aren't already familiar with the system, however. I just think that Speakup generally has the best support for this kind of thing at the moment. An alternative is a program called TDSR, which is easier to get working but not as featureful. It does, however, have the advantage of working on Macs as well.Hope this Brain dump is helpful.

JaceK,You're definitely going to want to review the screen with Speakup's review commands. I would suspect Orca will have similar column issues to NVDA, but I know that Speakup works well enough, flashing issues aside. The menu reading stuff is just because of the way the game does highlighting. What happens if you switch to highlight-tracking mode using the Speakup commands?I don't remember exactly which key to use, but it should let you toggle between a few different modes. If you use Speakup you'll also want to use the key to tell the current color of the item under the cursor. I noticed, for instance, that forests have a green background. That's the numpadperiod key, I don't remember what it is with a laptop keyboard.I'm still experimenting with this myself, but it's possible to play in the current version if you know what you're doing.

JaceK,I have a theory why the game is speaking randomly to you like this,. Darin, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect there's a lot of flashing going on. The game seems to flash your units, which causes Ncurses to redraw them, which causes Speakup or other screen readers to speak the letter representing them, as it thinks it's "New."I have seen this a lot in some other ASCII games, and it's quite annoying. Maybe there could be  a toggle to disable it?

I take your point about the maps and such being a little confusing, but I'm also sad that more blind people aren't aware of the potential in these kinds of games. THere's nothing else like them, and I think that a lot of the issue is the way the screen reader handles navigation, not the games themselves.Darin,Your ideas sound like a good way to begin. I just wish I were able to fix NVDA to behave more sensibly as regards ASCII maps, since I definitely know they're a thing in many other games aside from yours. Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

To your other questions… It's possible to review the entire screen one line or word at a time, but less straight-forward to review specific sections on demand. JAWS is more powerful in that respect but also quite a bit more complicated, and expensive. Speakup and NVDA are free and open source. One thing which is easier with any Windows screen reader is command-line style interaction, such as with MUDS or the 1OOM Project. I don't know how suitable your game is to that kind of thing, but it might help minimize the frustrations that come from dealing with the different screen navigation issues.Incidentally, the reason that Dwarf Fortress, among other games, isn't very easy for me to play is that they refuse to put the text cursor in a sensible place, even in ncurses mode. It therefore becomes hard to figure out what's around me, where I can build, etc. I hope this helps clarify things at least a little for you.

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

Darin,Good to see you here. I'm BlindGuyNW on Reddit, in case you wondered. Anyway, I'm happy to answer some of these questions.A Braille display isn't essential for playing this, or any other rogue-like/text-based game, it just makes the process easier. A bit of background wouldn't go amiss here, I hope this helps answer your questions as well. When I use a Windows console window to play a rogue like game, the thing which makes it useable at all is that the terminal cursor always focuses on the location of the player character/@ sign. In turn, the screen reader review cursor, which is an entirely separate thing, starts there. It's therefore mostly straight-forward to move the review cursor around and get a sense of what's nearby because I always have a solid reference point. This holds true for the console (Speakup) screen reader on LINux, and Jaws for Windows. NVDA has a slight issue which I will explain if I can. It's an internal problem and I've never really found a satisfactory solution.NVDA's review cursor behaves badly in Windows console windows because it doesn't understand columns. That is, if you had the following map display…|.@..|||NVDA's review cursor would let you start at the @ sign but if you moved downwards, you'd end up looking at the vertical bar on the far left, not the period immediately below.Jaws and Speakup don't have this problem.I apologize if this takes us a bit far from the point, but it's been a continuous source of frustration for me for years, and hard to explain.

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

Hey,I haven't yet had a chance to check these directions myself, but the original author of the game offered some ideas. So, I looked a bit further into getting Arcane Fortune playable under cmd.exe and I think this could work for you (at least it did on Windows 7 for me):I opened cmd.exeRight clicked the top of the window and chose "Properties".I set the font size to 8x12 in the Font tab, then I set the window size and height in the "Layout" tab to 150 for the width and 76 for the height. The exact amount doesn't matter too much, but much less than those amounts can cause the game to crash. You can't change these preferences once the game is launched.I "cd" into the directory where I have the game and then further "cd" into the "game" sub directory. Then I run "arcane_fortune_windows_pdcurses.exe"Then I select start a new game.I then went to the menu, selected "Preferences" and then selected "Use only 8 colors". Via the keyboard you can simply press the following letters in sequence "m", "p", "u".Are you able to access color information with your screen reader? The keys you can press in the game are indicated by coloring individual letters blue and you'd have to memorize a lot if you're planning to play only with the keyboard. Maybe there's a better way I can do that if it's an issue?Another setting you might find useful is to set the underlay mode to "Water & mountains only". Via the keyboard you can simply press the sequence "m", "v", "o". Although I'm not sure if it'll matter or not for increasing accessibility.

Actually… I'm afraid this suffers from a similar problem as Cataclysm on Windows. That is, the console version doesn't use the actual Windows console, it uses an emulator, which doesn't appear to be accessible. The Mac OS and Linux versions work better, but this is still disheartening.

Hey,Yeah, you need to manually assign ship classes to shipyards. You choose "retool," in the activity combo box, where it says "no Activity" by default. Does that much not read for you? If you're having trouble reading that, I don't know what might be going on.You basically select the activity you want, in this case retool, and pick the ship class you want, and then hit "set activity." The first retool of your untooled  shipyard is free and instant. After that you can actually queue up ships for building.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hey,It has been a little while since I looked at this, but I wonder what happens when you tab around the Forge window? IT sounds like the Java access bridge, which is required for this app to work, isn't enabled. To fix this, you need to go into your Java installation, which is usually c:\program files (x86)\oracle\java, or something along those lines, and you need to find the bin directory. Inside that will be a file named jabswitch.exe. You need to open that directory in a command prompt, and run jabswitch.exe, like this.jab switch /enable.It sounds difficult, but its' the kind of thing that should only be required once.IF you do that and it says that the Java access bridge has been enabled, the app should hopefully start speaking a bit more.I hope this helps, and that you can figure it out. It's a delightful game.

Re: Aurora 4X, Back to More Accessible Stars

As a heads up for anyone else who experiences this issue, I believe we were able to solve it by adjusting WINdows scaling settings. By default they are set to scale up the display which doesn't play very well with NVDA's mouse routing. The solution is to reduce the scaling to 100%, despite what Windows recommends. On an unrelated note, version 1.12 of Aurora will add automated assignment of planetary governors, which will help reduce micro-management and make it easier to handle many colonies at once. It isn't out yet, but watch for further reports.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hey all,I just wanted to drop a quick update on where things stand. At the moment the game accessibility is still being improved, albeit at a somewhat slower rate due to real-life worries and work. My latest efforts have been adding names to some components in the UI which lack them, such as the "start," button on the game creation screens, and the tables in the deck chooser. I've also been adding some controls to the tab sequence to make navigation of the app a little more fluid. At the moment the card details text field is tabbable, which makes it much easier to tell what a given card does.I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to work on the game log and displaying card stats and such in a simpler fashion. These are the two big areas which still need a little improvement.I've realized that I generally prefer offering live demos to pre-recording them, so have to apologize again for not having one ready. My friend Hadi has offered to do one at some point in the near future, and as always if anyone has any questions feel free to hit me up on here or on Skype or where ever.

Sadly it isn't accessible at the moment but if the developers can't be convinced to work on accessibility for it, I might give it a try myself. XMage supports Commander and all the other big formats, but then again so does this app, albeit mostly with AI opponents.

What is Magic? That's a question other people can answer better than I can, but it's basically a game that's been around for almost 30 years at this point. The basic rules are available from this page, among many other places, but the complexities of the game take a long time to learn. It's easier to learn by playing against other people or, as with this app, an AI.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hi All,I haven't quite figured out how I want to handle a demo yet, since I'm still kind of in general accessibility improvement mode. I Hope that people who are willing to give this a try on their own don't get discouraged by the lack of a demo, it's totally possible to play a complete game, especially if you're already familiar with MAgic. For the past couple days, I've been making small improvements to the deck editing aspects of the game. I added labels to the "Add basic lands," dialog, which is important when doing a booster draft or otherwise constructing a deck. I also fixed a small bug in the deck selection combo box, which should hopefully make it more pleasant to use now. I'm working on adding as much info to the card names as I can, so that in addition to tap status we can at least get mana cost and possibly type info announced without having to move to the details pane. That should speed up gameplay considerably. In a sense, the work on making this game accessible will never entirely be done, just because there are always places for improvement. I hope that it continues to be fun and enjoyable for people for years to come.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Alan,I'll hopefully get a demo up this weekend, but here's a quick description of the way the UI works. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Magic, but I'll assume you've at least read the basic rules, or at any rate can do so if you feel like it. The Forge UI is basically split into a bunch of small windows. These run more or less as follows.Your hand. This one is obvious, it's all the cards you currently have available to play. Typically, you can keep  up to seven cards.Your field. This is where creatures, lands, and other cards are played. You can also find status information here, such as the number of cards in your library, life points, etc. Also in the field you'll find a set of phase toggles, which are useful for speeding up gameplay if you don't want to be prompted to play cards in certain phases. By default they are all enabled, which means you will be prompted to play cards in every phase. Fiddling with them is a somewhat advanced topic.Your opponent's field. This is pretty much identical to yours, except it's where their cards are played. They also have a set of phase toggles you can switch, for when it's their turn.Card Detail. This is where you find info about whatever card your mouse is hovering over at the moment. Most importantly, mana costs and card text are listed here. There's also information about cards power and toughness or loyalty, depending on the kind of card, as well as some less immediately important data about where the card came from and how common it is.Game log. This is important, it's the window where everything that happens is shown. It's also the most annoying, because at the moment it's basically a bunch of tiny text fields, and it's easy to get lost in it. You'll want to approach it from the right, as that's the bottom-most log entry. To make this easier to do, open the stack and then move right of that, and then open the log, as it shares the same space. The stack. This is where spells and effects are resolved. It's another series of text fields, though generally far smaller than the log. Most of the time, it's closed if you don't need to see it.Combat. This is a window which lists information about creatures attacking you, or which you are using to attack. It shares a space with the stack and the log.Prompt. This is where you are told information about who's turn it is, who has  priority for placing things on the stack, and so forth. It's also where you go to advance through  phases when you have nothing to do, just press Ok to pass priority or "end turn," next to it, if you don't want to be prompted for any of the following phases. There are a couple windows and controls which are less commonly used,  such as the dock and the card picture window, but those can generally be ignored by totally blind players. So the general game flow is like this… You start a game, which I will demonstrate in the demo, but basically involves selecting a game format and decks for yourself and the AI.You have a virtual coin toss to decide who will go first.IF you win, you decide whether you want to play first or draw a card, using the prompt window. You then get your first look at your hand, and can decide whether to keep it or to take a mulligan, which will let you discard it, draw another hand, and then discard one card from that hand. You might want to do this if you had no land cards, for instance. When it's your turn, you play cards by selecting them with the NVDA cursor, and then moving the mouse to them with NVDA-shift-M, or nvda-numpad-slash. This is necessary because the card details panel only shows information for the card currently highlighted with the mouse. You can check the details if you're ever unsure about what a card does, it doesn't have to be your card. Just click on the cards you want to play, whether they're on the field or in your hand. When you're done, you press OK on the prompt window, or end turn. You listen to the sounds indicating what your opponent does, possibly checking the log or stack window to see what they've played. The process repeats with occasional variations, going turn by turn.Basically, you use the NVDA review cursor to navigate the screens. Each little window is preceded by a title to its left, such as "Zack hand," or "Card detail." To the right of the title is that window's contents, whatever it happens to be.I hope this helps, and will definitely try to explain more in my demo.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hi All,I thought I'd try something a bit different than my usual and talk a little about what's currently possible, where my accessibility efforts are focused next, that kind of thing. At the moment, it is possible to play a complete game of MTG with FOrge, though winning is another matter. It is possible to  draft a deck or participate in a sealed tournament, read card information, and generally navigate 95% of the UI.It isn't really easy to do many of these things, just because the game UI was not designed for keyboard users, and that includes people using screen readers. My goals for the next while are consequently related. I want to make the experience easier  if I can. Here are a few ideas I have for doing that…I hope to improve the deck selection experience over the next day or so, at the moment it's a little confusing, and once that's done I Can focus on other areas. One thing I have thought which might make things smoother is making it possible to read details about cards in a user's hand without having to go to the card details pane to do so. I'm not quite sure what approach to take, maybe listing card name, type, and cost info in the accessible description, so that it gets read out much like tap status is now. I'd leave special abilities for the details area, which is potentially much longer, depending on the card.Another area i Want to improve is the log window. Currently this is probably the most annoying part of the game, in that NVDA slows down considerably when a user enters it. This is because of the way the game log is implemented, it's a scrollable list of, potentially, hundreds of text fields, one per log entry. I can probably improve this, just not quite sure of the best way to do so yet. Finally, I want to record a demo. I would like to do this fairly soon, if only because people have expressed interest in the game, and I believe it's quite possible to enjoy it even as it stands now. I'm going to make that my main goal for this holiday weekend here in the states.I hope this has been informative, if not entertaining. I'll keep everyone updated on my progress, and hope to have good news to share with you fairly soon.

JaceK,The ones i use most often are "C," for combat view, "L," to open the log, and "s," to open the stack. There are a few others but those are about 90-95% of them. It's really a fundamentally mouse-based UI, which the NVDA review cursor just makes navigable. As I said I'm going to try to make the shortcuts a little more useful

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Sorry for the double post. Regarding Golden Cursor, what I've done personally for the game in the past was set bookmarks to the titles of the various windows, so that you'd have one for your hand, one for your opponent's field, etc. It wasn't 100% reliable but works well enough.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

JaceK,Golden Cursor has nothing to do with the in-game shortcuts. All S does currently is pop up the stack window. I can probably easily modify it to move system focus there when you press that key, though. I'm going to be working on making focus behave better in general, and that's a great place to start.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

JaceK,I'm glad you got it working. I've been curious about plane chase for a while but never really played a game in it.One thing I know for sure is that the current handling of selecting cards from zones is a little confusing, the list of selectable places sometimes pops underneath the window for the main game, so it isn't obvious that something has happened. THis doesn't happen super often but I'm going to work on fixing it.As another tip, if you get lost, always close the log window which is by far the largest area of the window. I always run with the stack window open and occasionally combat, when that phase comes up.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

JaceK,That is a checkbox, I believe. You can activate those the way you normally would, in addition to clicking on them. You can also use nvda-enter or tab to them and press space. What you're missing in this case is probably routing the mouse to the place where your NVDA cursor is, with NVDA-shift-M or nada-slash. You need to generally do this to highlight cards, click on labels which don't respond properly to keyboard commands, etc. Just press nvda-shift-M or nvda-numpad-slash before you click.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

DRG,The bookmarks are useful when you actually get to a match. To get back from the quest screen, you need to click on "Constructed," which is one of the menu items in that same area as Quest, pUzzle, etc. In general, clicking on these expands or collapses them.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

tayo.bethel,I think you will probably be okay. The Golden Cursor bookmarks aren't necessary, just save some time. It's possible to add/create your own. IF you position the mouse over any part of the game screen, which you can do using NVDA commands, you can add a bookmark for it.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Ertay and all,I want to play this game which is one reason I work on it so readily. I'm partial to draft decks, as it's a whole mini game on its own, but I can definitely appreciate the appeal of pre-constructed ones. There are several hundred to choose from in addition to unlimited numbers of randomized ones

This file is just for the screen resolution of 1920x1080, I didn't touch the  game's resolution because i didn't understand what it did, exactly.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

sneak,I'm not the best person to give actual Magic advice, but if you learn the rules of the game you can maybe start with one of the welcome decks. In the "Constructed," match type, you can set each player to use a different deck, and if you search for "welcome," you'll find decks from last year which have different combinations of colors and abilities. Just make sure to use NVDA's mouse movement commands a lot to click on things. It gets easier with practice.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

jescat277,You don't put the folder in app data, the game does that automatically when you run it for the first time. You just put the files in the right places and restarts nd it works.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Drg,You put the file in %appdata%\nvda\add ons\golden cursor\mouse positions, or something like that. It should just work if it's in the right place. The other thing you need to do is to maximize the Forge window. Finally, you need to turn on an option in VNDA preferences to have the review cursor follow the mouse, though I forget the name of it at the moment. The options are a bit weird, but basically the numbered ones are the ones yoou'll use most often. I didn't actually create his file, it was done by a sighted Forge user, so things can certainly be renamed and improved.

Firefly,THe updater is just an item in the Game settings menu. It downloads a temporary archive which you can just extract/override. You go to "Game settings," then "Content downloaders," and the updater is in there.
