Re: Android smartphone for testing purposes, which one to choose?

You might consider the Pixel 4A. I definitely prefer the Pixel experience and you will get updates more rapidly as well as Pixel only features. The 4A is new without being the current top phone so it will be cheaper. If you get the 4A with 5G, for example it runs about $200 less than the Pixel 5.Enjoy your experiment, I am currently using a Pixel 5 as my primary device and loving the new multifinger gestures!

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Google doesn't make all Android devices, so the experience is going to be a little different depending on the maker and how good the device is. I can tell you that if you use Google's TTS instead of the default one that comes on Samsung devices and use a good device, then they are equal. Talkback is better at some things, Voice Over better at some others. Try the experience on a Pixel for the most one to one comparison, since Google controls the hardware and operating system in that case.

The closest parallels I can think of would be Code Jumper or swift Playgrounds. Code Jumper might be targeted for a younger audience, but it might be worth looking into as it's a tactile and accessible version of the blocks thing as far as I can tell. Swift Playgrounds requires an iPad, but is a great way to learn coding in a more fun and gamified environment. Hope one of these is helpful. Here's a link to Code Jumper, Swift Playgrounds you'd have to get from the app store with an iPad. https://codejumper.com/Best of luckk!

@10, Tizen is based on Linux, not Android.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TizenLG TVs run LG web OShttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebOSHence, the Android TV devices are the streaming sticks and boxes. NVIDIA shield being one of the more well known such devices.https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/I have tried that particular device, it runs talkback, where Samsung and LG, not being Android TVs, run their own TTS. The accessibility of the NVIDIA shield, as I mentioned previously, is pretty terrible, not because you can't turn on Talkback, but because little beyond the main app list etc have been coded to be compatible with a screen reader.

To be clear, android TV is a streaming device you plug into a TV such as Samsung, LG or Sony, so we are having two separate discussions here. Android TV is more similar to Fire TV, Apple TV or even Roku. It's not an actual television.

Re: Android TV recommendations/experiences

My experience with Android TV is limited, because the current offerings are not very accessible. Don't mistake me, you can run talkback, but the interface and the apps have been given very little accessibility consideration. If you can wait, I would recommend you do so, as Google is working on their own official Android TV device, and they are likely going to put effort and testing into accessibility with that device. If you can't wait, Voice View on Amazon Fire products is a fork of talkback so has some similarities and the accessibility at least of the main OS is quite good. I actually prefer its interface over that of the Apple TV. It's also quite a cheap investment since you can snag a Firestick for something like $30 or something ridiculous. I also like the remote it comes with, pleasingly tactile buttons with enough distinction that if you use it regularly you won't have to keep looking up what button does what again. As I said though, if you can wait, I would wait for the Google device. They've been doing some cool things with accessibility lately!

Re: Have someone tried Microsoft surface pro?

I'm using a Surface pro 7 and it's the best machine I've had. I opted for the i& 10th generation process, so it turns on extremely fast and comes out of sleep mode in so quickly it is awake and has scanned my face by the time I have it fully upright with the kickstand out.You definitely will need a keyboard. I enjoy the typing experience on the surface type cover, which magnetically attaches. I will say that it's not for everyone as it has a soft hinge so can be a little awkward if you tend to prefer to put your laptop on your legs. It is very portable though, with the type cover folded closed it's like carrying a thin book. I also enjoy the tablet size since large screens hardly do me any good.In short, it's small, fast and powerful with a USB a and USB C ports, plus headphone jack and micro SD card reader, which you can use to expand your local storage if that's a concern.Your experience may not be as good if you get one of the cheaper options, I can't say from experience. This one has, for full disclosure* 16 GB ram* Intel I 7 10th generation processor* 256 GB solid state storageIF you are willing and able to shell out the cash for this, I think you will be pleased. Some people have issues with graphics heavy games, but probably not a concern in this case. I even use it for coding and it's always very responsive and snappy.Best of luck with your research and shopping!

Re: Android? or Apple?

I have both an iPhone and a Pixel, and work in the mobile app accessibility arena professionally, so I spend a lot of time on both platforms. My analysis is that they are currently pretty equal, there are a lot of outdated opinions of Talkback, but the last few updates have definitely brought it on a level with Voice Over. It can do pretty much all the same things, just in slightly different ways. Even the tales of more apps being accessible on iOS isn't necessarily true any more. In fact I have a number of apps I can only use with Android, and several others where accessibility is better even if I can hack it with either platform. Both have braille screen input, similar navigation capabilities and settings. Talkback does have a screen search feature that works better than Voice Over's item chooser in my tests of both and a few new or upcoming features that are nice additions.I will say that Talkback has made a lot more updates lately and added more features than Apple has in a long time. I also, have been very fed up with the accessibility bugs in iOS 13. I am planning in the next few weeks to switch mobile providers and at that time make my Pixel my primary device.A few pieces of advice.1. It is worth investigating if you will have access to all the apps you need on Android if you switch2. I Highly suggest getting a Pixel device if you go Android. You will get more features and more frequent updates, and with the Pixel 4A likely to be released soon, there will be a new mid priced option if that's a concern.3. You may wish to wait until iOS 14 and Android 11 are released in a couple of months. Apple is promising some improvements for Voice Over, though some of those will only be available if you have one of the newer, more expensive phones. I know for certain there are a lot of big changes coming out for Talkback as well, which will well be worth putting into consideration when you make your choice.4. Finally, it is worth considering the ecosystems of both. I personally don't really care for Apple's other products, such as the Apple TV and have no interest in owning a Homepod. I am, however quite fond of my Google speakers and am strongly considering getting a pair of the new Pixel buds. I really want to try the live language translation feature!Good luck with your decision! The good news is that you should have good accessibility either way, and it's better to have the problem of not knowing which platform to choose, instead of being force to pick the only one that is accessible.

Spectrum Access, a Free App to Provide Audio Description and Closed Ca

2020-05-05 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : Shadow via Audiogames-reflector

Spectrum Access, a Free App to Provide Audio Description and Closed Ca

Spectrum, AKA Charter Communications, yesterday released a new app called Spectrum Access: Enabled Media. It is completely free for anyone in the United States to use, you do not have to be a Spectrum customer, and can provide audio description or closed captioning in circumstances where those things might otherwise not be available.how it works, in brief, is you find a movie on the app, download the description or closed captioning track, then, while that movie is playing from a TV, laptop, or any other device with speakers, you tap play and sync for the track. The app then listens to the external audio and starts playing the description or captioning from your phone synchronized with the already playing show. You don't have to be at the beginning of the movie, the app will start the description at whatever point in the show you are at when it starts listening. This is great for watching movies with friends and family who don't want to hear the description track, you can put in an earbud and listen to it yourself, or someday, when we're allowed out in public again, at the movie theater if you don't want to wear the theaters, probably been on dozens of other heads, earphones. You can even use it if a movie is on TV with no audio description, you might have to resync the track though if there are commercial breaks. You can find this in the iOS app store by searching for "Spectrum Access," or you can go to this link:https://apps.apple.com/us/app/spectrum- … 1492182876Enjoy!

Re: on the fence about an ipad/tablet

I got my lady an iPad mini for Christmas. She uses it for streaming TV shows and such without draining her phone. The only other real advantage I can see is if you are a coder and want to play with Swift Playgrounds. You could argue that it's better if you want to use it as a mobile computer, lighter and more battery than a laptop, but for us, it'd be cheaper just to get an external battery for the phone.I do have an android tablet, a Pixel-C, and I actually like it quite a bit. It has a very cool magnetically attachable keyboard, and is nice and tablet like without being as large as a full iPad. Sadly, they are no longer being sold. If you want to get into the Android and chrome world then a pixel Book might work for you as something that is still lighter and with longer battery life than most cheaper laptops. Then of course, if you are willing to spend a lot more money, there are laptops, such as thinkpads which have long battery life and are fairly light, or devices that are both tablet and laptop, convertible between the two states. Again, though, mostly in the much more expensive range. If your just looking to reduce drain on your phone while streaming media and so on, I would say the external battery is probably your cheapest option.

The website also has forums and a chat room for users to discuss issues, or just chat with each other. If this sounds interesting to you, we've just launched our Kickstarter. Re: A post about a business i'm thinking of looking into starting.

Hi brad,Here are my thoughts/reactions/suggestions. If you want to really make a business out of anything, there's a lot you need to know about running it and a lot of details to take care of before you can even get off the ground. At least in the U.S., you would need to register a business license for tax purposes, etc. Here are some things that I would be thinking about before trying to go anywhere with this project. Hopefully this will help.Q: Is there a market for my product, and if so, how much of one?A: Yes, there's probably a market, but how large is a different question entirely. Probably not huge, but whether it's enough to make into a sustainable business is unclear without some market research.Q: Is anyone else selling these products?A: as far as a quick google search shows, no.Q: How will I get my supply?A: This could be a challenge. It's quite likely that no one is currently producing these produ
cts, so you need to figure out who can/will make them.Q: What will the start up cost be?A: Depends on the manufacturer if you can find one.Q: Can you afford the start up costs of buying initial stock, buying a business license, setting up a website and online store, etc?A: Depends on your personal funds.Other thoughts...While I personally would like to have a talking tredmill etc, not everyone does, and pricing is going to be an issue. If all these pieces of equipment cost around $1000 U.S., then you're probably not going to get many personal buyers, since, unfortunately, most of the visually impaired community is still unemployed and can't afford those prices. It might help if you can get gyms and recreational centers to buy your products from you in the name of accessibility. If that is successful however, these machines offten last a while, so can you sell enough to keep the business going after your market has more or less
been saturated, in other words, everyone who wants a tredmill  has one until they break?Oh and no, I don't think we need talking weight machines. Only the electronic things like tredmills, stair steppers, bikes, etc.Good luck,Shadow

Re: online dating sites, and help please.

Online dating services are a perfectly fine idea for a lot of people, provided you choose a reputable one and are smart about online interactions. Though I feel the need to point out that everyone ought to be careful about online interactions regardless of whether its a dating site or not, thats just life. There are people willing to take advantage of a sucker everywhere, so dont be one.My own recommendation for a dating site though would be OKCupid. They only charge if you want to get rid of ads for one thing, their site was pretty accessible when I used it a few years ago, and I like theyre match system. Also, a good friend of mine met his now wife on there after I recommended it to him, and theyre a fantastic pair. Now, obviously not everyones going to succeed in such a spectacular way, but its worth a shot. Be sure to answer quite a few of the match questions, and make sure you present yourself well. I dont mean
make up things to make yourself sound better, but a well written presentation can be pretty important when its one of the first impressions someone is going to have of you.I also know people have had some success with Match and EHarmony, but I believe both of those services you have to pay for if you want to communicate with your matches, and I didnt like their match questions as much as OKCupids. My last two pieces of advice are, of course be careful about who you meet in person (communicating by phone or Skype before an in person meeting is probably a good idea), and remember that the more anxious you are to find someone, often the less likely you are to succeed. If youre in the mind set of having to find someone, anyone to be with, then that will change how you present yourself and the impression you give off. Youre much more likely to find someone right for you if you take it easy and be yourself. A relationship that starts with friends
hip has a better chance of succeeding, in my experience, and sometimes, even if you dont work out as a couple, you make a new friend!Good luck!Shadow

Re: Of wearables and implants

Im afraid I have to disagree with you, dark in regards to the implants being so far out in the future.Firstly, because of this article here...http://www.sciencealert.com.au/news/20141310-26321.htmlOf course that wont work for everyone, but a fairly substancial number.Furthermore, I can say that, based on what Im learning in my biological psychology class, we are getting a better idea of how the brain works at a very fast rate. Theres a machine that can be used to stimulate specific parts of the brain for experimental purposes, and my professor was telling us about this guy she knows with one who can use his knowledge plus a mapping system on the computer to basically find all kinds of areas on his own brain, like the centers for speech or motor control. This next article is about a technology just barely being tested, but realy cool none the less. Essentially, one researchers brain waves were interpreted by a computer, which then sent the signal over the internet to another, which then stimulated the second researchers brain to cause them to see a serious of flashes in their vision, which could be interpreted into words. So, the first step to brain to brain communication!http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.co … -mind.htmlSometime before that, they even had one rat control another rat with a similar kind of set up.The future of technology is pretty exciting, in my opinion, and I think actually wearable devices are going to become more and more popular as we increase our ability to squeeze power into smaller and smaller spaces.Implants may indeed meet social resistance at first, but I dont anticipate that lasting very long.
