No worries, I know it's quite the quandery for most of us. Paradoxically, I need to be in a really good mood to read China Meilleville, since his books tend to be pretty bleak. He's a brilliant writer and thinker, but I need something cheerful after 10 pages or so to escape the abyss. I should give him another shot though, everyone says perdito street station is his best book.

Hey everyone,I'm sorry to hear about how your son's been acting lately Nocternous, youch is certainly right. Honestly thinking back on my own thought processes at that time I think lots of kids are just a little sociopathic. It's hard to stop thinking about yourself at that age long enough to consider what sort of effect your actions are having on others. It wasn't in vogue at all in my generation but a little corporal punishment was used in my case until I smartened up. Not enough to really hurt, just enough to let me know that my antics weren't being tolerated.    I've been meaning to check out David Brinn myself, and started an anthology of his short stories entitled otherness. His writing impresses me more than his plots, but a perfectly crafted short story that gives you a kick in the pants and leaves you contemplating it for weeks is a rare gem. I'm still really enjoying him though, his writing is really engaging and I
love his ideas. The concept of the uplift books sounds right up my street. I'm so tired of evil aliens bent on taking over the world.    As of a month ago I've started my life in Japan and it's been very exciting, in spite of the challenges. Similar to dark's experiences with auditioning, interviews for English teaching positions have been stiff and awkward. And without fail I get a polite, but cold and non-explanatory rejection e-mail a week later. Though much of that could be my own fault admittedly. I get very nervous in interviews. Does anyone have strategies for handling them?

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Hey Folks,Happy 2017! It really seems alter eon has undergone a lot of development lately. Perhaps I should give it another shot. I went on a mudding binge throughout my early teenaged years and since then have become very wary of anything with too much grinding or player politicking of the nastier sort. What would you all say is a mud with very little repetitive activity and a decent player base? I know where you're coming from CAE when you talk about motivation and the existential terror of stepping out into the world and looking for the right environment. At some point you've got to make the leap, and see where you land. I found a friend in Japan who has a spare room and is willing to rent out to me, so I'm taking a huge risk and going over there on a working holiday visa to look for English teaching work. Needless to say I'm very nervous. In the mean time I'm finishing up this English teaching certification and cramming as much Japane
se into my head as I can. I'm sad to hear about your lady's dog Dark. Those losses always leave a space in your heart that no other dog can fill.

You could try Vocalizer for NVDA. It's a little pricy, since I think they make you buy all 70 voices rather than just the 1 or 2 you'd want, but you could save up for it. They give you a two day demo anyways, so here's the link:https://vocalizer-nvda.com/

You're right Dark that zombies do generally have more to say about our modern society. Thinking about why this is tends to be more interesting than most zomby stories out there. Unicorns don't have as much going for them in that area, but there is The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. It's one of the closest examples of perfection in storytelling I can think of.All that said, I just can't vote against dragons.

Re: Monthly chat December 2015

I'm sorry gamecreator to hear about your breakup. Those can be very rough and can take a long time to get over. I hope you can find some opportunities to keep busy and do something you love. I have always found making games to be far too complex and taxing, kind of like building a sandcastle one grain at a time. I have no idea how anyone does it, but I've always meant to look into inform 7, in order to right a story with some interactive elements. You're right Dark that people respect titles for no apparent reason, but getting a PH.D. at least means that you were able to focus on one topic for a couple of years and in some way add to it, which is more than I can say for myself. I start each day trying to learn more Japanese, but after 5 minutes get distracted on youtube because of some news story, and then I'm in the mood for some Beethoven, and then I'm reading the news, and so on. I love learning, but can't concentrate on one thing long enough
to learn anything interesting.     I did manage to get all my Christmas shopping done in one intense two hour burst though, and I think everyone will be satisfied. I find when you're shopping on a budget, the best thing to do is get something that's either edible or drinkable, as everyone likes to relax with something delicious after the hectic holidays.     I've been meaning to read more classic science fiction, as well as more classics in general, so I'll have to pick up some heinlane. I've tried Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle, because I love alternate history, but have yet to find a book that tackles alternate history in enough depth. The Man in the High Castle came the closest though I think.

Hey there everyone,it sounds like you all are having a rather exciting and busy time, especially Dark and Gamesmaster. Congradulations on finding a lady to share your life with Dark and that sounds like it'll be one mind blowing week for you gamesmaster. I personally prefer to spread my celebrations out, so I'm glad that my birthday is a few months later. I've been considering getting into Buffy and Angel, as I loved Firefly and the Avengers, and Joss Weedon just seems to be an all round stellar guy. Do any of you know if it can be found with descriptions? I'm really not crazy about the Monster of the Week format, so I've only recently started to get interested in TV series as more and more are now designed to be watched in sequence. I haven't been up to as much as all of you it seems, but I did get a job application to a government run english teaching program in Japan. I think I'm their first blind applicant as far as I know, as th
e Japanese embacy called and asked me to write them a letter explaining how we get by in our every day lives. They assured me that they would give me a fair chance at getting in, but my hopes aren't very high. Otherwise I've been looking for more books to read as always, as well as considering taking online T E S L (teaching english as a second language) courses. I've recently graduated with my batchelor's degree and really have no other ideas on what to do next. So I'd love your book and show recommendations and or suggestions on career building.

I just got back from a year long exchange in Japan, so now my Japanese is passible, so Ive been trying to find anime or Japanese dramas that interest me to keep the language skills up. I dont have the money to buy it, so I find it online, but do any of you know how I could access the english subtitles? I find the female characters arent so hard to understand, as they generally anunciate everything clearly, but the guys mumble and use a lot of slang and abbreviate their words, making it really tricky, and the more complex fantasy or science fiction anime has a lot of vocabulary that Im not familiar with. So does anyone have any suggestions? My favourite anime that Ive seen recently is Clannad, and the second season, Clannad After Story. Its more of a slow paced, slice of life anime but with a lot of depth and character development. I find I really identify with the characters as even though they are not disabled, many of them are a little eccentr
ic and have trouble fitting in with normal society. I will warn you there are some huge tearjerkers in the second season, but its all worth it.
