Re: Swamp, zombie fps by Aprone

Hmm, methinks this is the topic we need to call something along the lines of How hypocritical does Nocturnus get, for it seems that every single time I come back in here Im retracting from things Ive said in the past! Oh well; call it hypocrisy; I call it late realization! Yes, its me again. Many of us, myself included have stated with no questionable doubt at some point in time or another that Swamp should just be shut down, that its caused too many problems, that it wasnt even supposed to be this big, that there is something going on almost once a week, and the list of reasons one could use as an argument against swamp continues. The easy solution is not as easy as one might think, least, not without hurting a lot of people in the process. It would be like creating an apartment complex that was so m
uch more sophisticated than any other in a community and tons of people come to like it. The problem is that there are a bunch of crazies who are also drawn to it. You kick them out; they find their way back in. You give up and shutdown the place because thats the easy thing to do, and you hurt a lot of other people who have invested both time and money into the project. Swamp has had both time and money invested into it. Aprone coded it, Kai contributed sound design, people gave their hearts into testing and ensuring that all things were running as smoothly as possible, and still others donated money. I myself have considered it if only because Ive been playing for a month now and feel this is something worth donating to, since its become almost as much a social network or hangout spot as it is a game, and the service itself in general is a good one, a reliable one many have come to count on for differen
t reasons. In short, its easy enough to tell someone to do something when youre not that person; I myself have made that same mistake. I wont say that I know why Aprone doesnt just give it up and go off and do something else, cant say that I know how long he plans on keeping this up, will never even attempt to guess at all of the stress he is willing to and has put up with already for this project to keep it going, but when you factor all of that in, plus everything else Ive previously mentioned in this post, it doesnt add up to an easy solution. You can pull the plug, but when the plug and the service youre pulling it from are not the problem, you dont quite get rid of the problem, do you?Im sure Im not the only one who has reflected upon the fact that swamp has rules and no one to really enforce them, and a community like that is a hard one to live in. We have law enforcement off
icers in our communities to deal with criminals, with theft, with emergencies of all sorts, and the bigger the community, the more of them you need. IN the apartment complex analogy I previously used, you get law enforcement to deal with the crazies; in swamp, you have an automated system which does its best, but which is still an automated system that cant take everything into consideration and can be exploited by as many methods as you code into it, and it cant hold you accountable for what you do. People can be exploited, bribed, conned, cheated, bargained with, but not everyone works the same, and not everyone is going to deal with you in the same way, especially when all of the people in question have a similar goal to achieve, and if all of those people are willing to communicate. By no means is this a suggestion to find neutral unbias people who can be trusted with the task of dealing with idiots on swamp and keeping it safe for everyone else; I
think at any rate that this is so out of control at this point its probably not even worth looking at, but it is worth keeping in mind that in a place thats not governed by anything other than computer code you cant expect true order at all times.Im going to hold with everything Ive posted previously in this topic as in all reality, that is everything I think is best. Hopefully this post did provide something to think about at the very least though, since that was its intended purpose. It was easy enough for me to tell Aprone to shut down swamp and quit its development even a year ago; I cant say the same anymore.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=151679#p151679

Re: Playing playroom on mac, smarphones and tablets with the web client

@Aminiel:Thank you very much for your clarification on all of my previous points of concern. I certainly do appreciate the immensity of the translation problem and understand the complications it presents. I also never considered that perhaps a completely new design might be necessary if we wanted first letter navigation in all menus including cards and such, though to be honest, I sort of like it as is and would rather keep it that way. I was just outlining some of the differences with RS-Games more than not. since you pointed out the first letter navigation being available in many of the playrooms menus I decided to test it out and realized how much Id been missing out on; thanks for pointing that out as well. Playing games traditionally was never much of an issue for me personally; I like having the unique twists youve put on games, like misère and single and double pairs in yahtzee, and the con and end of con cards in 1000 miles. I look forward to seeing more development from you in future; youve done a great job thus far.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148418#p148418

Re: Playing playroom on mac, smarphones and tablets with the web client

if you consider that the RS-Games client doesnt have audio, doesnt really have options you can configure, doesnt allow you to store your data for future log-ins on whatever device you happen to be using, and most noticeable of all, lags like a bucket of molasses going up a snowy hill on a cold winter morning, then yes, Id say it is. I know I probably shouldnt be so objective and should try to stay a little more opoen minded on the RSGames development, but for far too long now have I felt that development over there is centering more on luring people than getting things done right. We release games; we pump more advertising at you, and when you finally get tired of our games, we release another one, and forget the bugs that might be in our previous titles, give you a voice feature you cant seem to pass up despite their being so many ways to communicate by voice now you could shoot a needle and not miss one, cause the server to l
ag even more in the process, shoot more advertisements at you, give you another game, and so on.Its not all golden paradise on the playroom either; we dont have first letter navigation because the developer believes this could make things just a bit too easy, we dont get the ability to play all games as they are traditionally played if we wish to do so, and while there is a community of people willing to provide translations for things that arent what they could be, were probably never going to get that chance. Still, at this point, Im willing to set all of that aside to say that in terms of stability, reliability, responsiveness, and overall performance, the playroom has much more to offer, on top of the games having their unique twists, which can sometimes make them more enjoyable when played with people willing to give them a chance. That having been said, I dont doubt that RS-Games can do something just as spectacular
in future; it might take a bit of push and shove, or something else I havent quite considered, but I look back to the days when I first arrived on this side of gaming as it were, to when monopoly was an enjoyable pastime with 3, 6, sometimes 8 people at a table, and I truly marveled at how well things worked.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148234#p148234

Re: Playing playroom on mac, smarphones and tablets with the web client

The majority of RS games can be found on the playroom, with bingo, apples to apples, shut the box, and pig being the exceptions. Other than that, theres no connection; the devs are different, and feature wise the playroom has much more of convenience to offer, including soundcard/audio device switching capability, a greater amount of control over who can and cant join your games without having to use passwords for each one, a friends list or buddy list to which you can add people and see when they go off and come online and message or invite to a game from withim said list, the ability to save all sorts of history directly to your computer without having to go through an email service first, a save table feature which is useful if you ever want to return to a game at a later time, the customization of in-game and client messages you will receive at any given moment in time, and lastly, when you get tired of changing all of your settings and find that nothin
g is working quite the way you want it, a reset to default configuration option, which I think I dont need to explain. That doesnt make RS-Games a client not worth checking out, since there are versions available for windows mac and Linux, a voiceclips feature which I suppose is nice if you can get it to work with your default device, though admittedly Id rather use Skype or TeamTalk, first letter navigation, a fairly unique message buffer, higher quality sounds under some circumstances, and a nice enough way of presenting games to users, no tabbing required or use of shortcut keys to jump to different sections of the client.I cant wait for this game articles thingy Dark proposed awhile back; it would be nice to write out things like this wen people have questions to try and get as much answered on a particular topic, since I have gone slightly off topic in this case to give you the ins and outs on both sides.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148281#p148281

AS far as Im concerned, this client delivers and delivers well. It is quite a piece of work, complete with audio and as far as I can tell, every option available in the PC client. The shake to roll dice feature is rather nifty and exactly what I believe every dice rolling game should have allowed from the very beginning on any mobile device. Being able to navigate from button to button can slow down gameplay a bit for anyone on the other side, though admittedly I dont see how this could have been done any better, and most importantly, it works!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148172#p148172

Well, it goes back to obvious contributors; codebase that has tons of flaws as far as people are concerned, surrounded by a bunch of legal controversy, punctuated by general disappointment when the muds that tend to use it dont really take off as a result of all previously mentioned factors, and then we end up back at square one again with the next dev who decides to use it. In short, youre asking for nothing less than trouble if you mess with it, and should you proceed, youre doing so of your own accord. The consumer, however, has the right to be as skeptical or otherwise as far as your development and product are concerned.
