Bone shields are powerful, flagged antique, and cannot be carved on. You can, however, carve on bone blades though. The basic carve runes skill lets you carve on wood, petroglyph rock, glass or crystal and as you mentioned earlier, scrimshaw bone. The vast majority of low level druid cast is carvable, but I dont think this is the case for melee gear. Just keep an eye out for the composition of items. What if you want to move less than 3 spaces though, so when you move 2 spaces but it would penalize you as if you were moving the full 3 tiles. I just uploaded a new version to fix some bugs that were reported to me and implement some user requests, and it can be obtained from the link in the first post. As KeyIsFull said above, Constructive comments are welcome.KeyIsFull and I are also working on the conclusion to this series, where your mission is to penetrate the heart of the demon fortress and defeat the demon king. There will be over 10 different trap types to overcome, over 80 different pieces of equipment that you can use to equip your character with powerful artifacts on hidden locations or optional bosses, and many exciting enemies and some new game mechanics that Ive not seen in other maps. Just a quick teaser - Youll have a party of 5 adventurers:The archwizard has a wide variety of utility, offensive, defensive and tile warding spells. He performs magic through the release of magical energy into the immediate area, and does not rely on the external environment for his magic.
The stormlord, though similar to the archwizard at first glance, is actually very different as he uses weather instead of usual elemental magic. Some of its abilities include: collecting thermal energy to cause heat waves if the area is warm enough, conjuring fog and blizzards that hamper visibility if the area has cool air, summon thunderstorms when clouds are present, expand thunderstorms so they can affect more than 1 tile, and upgrade the thunderstorm into a tempest that does considerably more damage. The rogue can scout through enemy territory undetected, backstab, poison and blind enemies,, place time-delayed explosives and deal with traps and locks. Enemies learn from their experiences when falling prey to some of the rogues tricks.The paladin is a powerful champion of good with many melee capabilities complimented by a handful of spells. This has been on my radar for a while now and I just got to trying it. Sloth mud has a multiclass system where you can level 8 classes - bard, cleric, druid, mage, monk, necromancer, thief, and warrior. The order that you gain levels in the classes does matter - you cant choose to reorder your classes once chosen. For instance, someone that has level 40 necromancer as the first class (necromancer prime) will have stronger minions and less minion ordering lag than someone with lvl 40 necromancer as their 8th class and some spells and skills are only available for primes of a class. Youll be able to unlock the avatar class that has the most powerful abilities in the game as you level your first 8 classes. There is a huge array of spells and skills available and because most of it Is accessible to all, it opens up options for different strategies. Some abilities are also pretty unique; druids can shapeshift into a ferret (one of many forms) that most mobs dont
  aggro for a corpse retrieval, thieves can steal active spell effects from mobs and bards can sing the song of wealth and glory to triangulate item location by getting mobs to reveal information about items which gets more specific the closer you are to the item.Theres a large game world to explore; over 30k rooms according to live stats. You start in the newbie continent, 1 of 5 continents in the game that has areas for players till level 20. The areas that Ive seen are pretty well-written. At level 1, you can playtest (help ptest) high level play of different classes - when playtesting, your char temporarily has lvl 40 in 4 classes, has high level eq and is transported to the main continent where you can experiment with all your class spells/skills. As an added bonus, you also get to keep some exp and gold gained from playtesting to jumpstart your level 1 character. Ive not seen something like the playtesting feature on any other mud before, and as a newbi
 e, really appreciated the risk-free environment to experiment with high level abilities. There are quests, ranging from the simple assassination kinds to more complex puzzles, but I havent done many of these yet as Im only level 4. Other interesting features include customizing your eq by attaching items with stats to existing items, socketing runes to eq and astrology that has important game-world effects. There is a small playerbase (average of over a dozen chars on at any time) but players are active and happy to answer my newbie questions. The mv thing did get to me, and some mobs do give a fair amount of gold like the adventurers at the newbie school. I dont like the rent system, but I forgot to mention that you can not pay anything by just losing link, itll log you out after a while with your eq.The length of learning skills and spells is based on int, so unfortunately we start off with 12 int till level 8 when your actual stats are rolled. Major ChangesVersion 1 (Nov 27 2013)Huge overhaul of almost all skills/spells to make early game content easier but much more challenging and exciting endgame content. Too many individual changes to document. Please reread the documentation for all units if you have played previous versions. The most important are: ‧a tutorial map for the defence of illeria has been added to get newcomers accustomed to its complexity‧Map descriptions especially for the defence of iliria map contains more useful and important information‧new arbalist and engineer units. The engineer is able to repair gates with other healing spells not being useable on gates anymore. The engineer is also now able to upgrade the watchtower terrain type to lightly, moderately and heavily fortified watchtowers. Thanks both for the kind words. @Spiraling_wyvern: youll probably notice that the first half of the game is definitely easier and the addition of upgradable terrain in the engineer unit and the arbolist unit will definitely have a significant aspect of gameplay; not to mention that the bugs with the boss mob coming out earlier when it was supposed to fix. Have discovered another fantasy mud similar to alter aeon, materia magica, aardwolf and the like called lenzmoor. Im only level 2 and like it a lot thus far. Its homepage lives at http://lensmoor.org and you can connect to it at lensmoor.org port 3500. Some of the noteworthy things about this mud are:1. No rent! Quit from most places without having to rent.2. A powerful parser: unlike most muds, the parser is pretty flexible and forgiving. For example, l gob is as valid as l goblin or help sanc works as short for help sanctuary.3. Classless system. You get to choose to learn any of the dazzling array of 400 skills/spells that you want with the limiting factor being something called your skill cap. This represents the maximum amount of knowledge you can hold in various skills and spells. If the total of your skills/spells exceeds this skill cap, the least used skills attraphy to some extent. Age and wisdom give you bonuse
 s to skill caps and skills mastered at 100% are not subject to attraphy. The closest approximation to classes that exist on most other muds are something called specializations, which make it easier to use spells/skills falling within that specialization but makes it more difficult to learn and improve those outside specialization. Hence, specializing is only recommended after remort.4. Advancement: you start from level 1 and can get to level 91 after which you can remort into a more powerful race or the same race with better stats. There is only 1 remort necessary as far as Im aware though, so it isnt the insanity of doing it 63 times like in Aardwolf. Upon levelling, you get practices and trains. Trains are to improve your stats and practicing is well for skills/spells. It is highly recommended to learn skills/spells whenever possible from players as it saves up a lot on pracs. It will be necessary to quest to some extent for questpoints which can be converted t
 o trains. Its rather complex, so Ill leave it to you to read about it.5. Advantage/disadvantage system: you get to pick optional combinations of over a dozen advantages and disadvantages and change them as many times as you like before level 5 after which it is expensive to modify. Advantages range from always being able to see all hidden exits, increased hp and mana regen while disadvantages range from being more vulnerable to magic, having trouble sleeping, having your wimpy set to 75% permamently and having reduced hp/mana regen. This can have significant gameplay effects and also modifies things like trains received per level. Recommendation is to play around with them before level 5 and ask players for recommendations as messing this up could make life miserable.6. Well-written: the areas in this mud adhere to the theme and are fairly well-written. Each zone has a zone quest that you can complete for rewards and there may also be miniquests as well.7.
  RP encouraged: RP is optional but encouraged without the strict and overbearing enforcement that exists on RP muds like those from Iron Realms entertainment.8. Playerbase: when mudding yesterday, I observed a pretty steady average of 20 players logged on at any one time. The players were also pretty newbie friendly too.9. Newbies below level 25 have their corpse transported to morgues usually near recall when they die which is handy. Death after that leaves a corpse with all your equipment in it. You also get to use equipment 10 levels higher than you up to level 30 which helps tremendously when starting out. 10. Crafting and customization: theres a pretty intricate crafting system and players can even develop characters devoted exclusively to crafting. It is also very inexpensive and easy to customize your equipment as well.11. PK is available but optional.12. The only thing that Im uncomfortable with is how the game doesnt let 
 you see the absolute value of your hp, mana and vitality. Even when you set a prompt, they appear as percentages of your total. Its not a gamebreaker though and most people might not be bothered with it; it can be worked around. You do get to see your base hp and mana so you can work forwards. Similarly, you dont see the absolute cost of spells but if you have a prompt and work out your max mana, it is possible to work backwards if youre so inclined.13. Age is an IMPORTANT mechanic. You age 1 year every 25 hours in-game. With the exception of the increase in your skill cap, growing old has detrimental effects. The age which these effects start showing depends on your race. The psionic skill vigor and the divine restore youth spell can negate the effects of age. Hence, it is highly recommended that if you need to idle for any extended length of time, you do a config ooc on or better yet have AFK aliased to do that.14. Heros and sages: to advance

I have spoken to one of the immortals which has been very helpful and seems willing to make the game more accessible for screen readers. realms of despair

Started playing a mud that I discovered called realms of despair (http://www.realmsofdespair.com). Its in the same genre as muds like alter aeon and materia magica. Top mud sites lists it as having over 21,000 rooms and 150 areas. The areas are pretty well written, there is a large playerbase (100 online average) and people there have been pretty newbie-friendly. You pick between a dozen classes and get to choose if you want to be PK-able or not at the start. It took me a while to reroll till I got satisfied with my stats but that can be made less painful through triggers. The most annoying thing that ive encountered is how your fantasy-themed name needs to be validated manually by the immortals before you reach level 2 and can save. (If you want to make sure you can be validated quickly, you can type who imm to check if there are any immortals only and continue with the area that you are put in after char creation). 
 At first, it might be hard to advance because of how practice differs here from most other muds. Practice of spells/skills can only be done once which sets it to 19% and you then have to improve it through use. The max you can improve is usually 95%. Getting spells to a higher % was particularly painful. You do get exp for improves and mages (not sure about other classes) get spells that increase attributes, successful casts of which are good ways of exping at lower levels.At level 6 and up, dying leaves behind a corpse with all your eq so you might want to take the opportunity to explore without death penalties at level 5 and below. Ive died twice so far and both times happened so quickly for me to react. Im liking it so far though and there is good documentation and also player-contributed content and advice about the game (guides, wiki, eq databases and such) that are linked from the homepage. Not having the arcaic stupidity of rent is certainly a
