Jo, welcome to the party! "your request? you have an FB acound? how do you use the computer? (I don't usually use assistive tech in school or at least, we don't have the fecility) what's a screen reader?" a number of questians followed, at the end of which she remarked, "I didn't know you had an FB profile, and I think you have a celebraty photo as your Pro pic". so, in short, such occurances may just be really misunderstandings.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=171579#p171579

I'm in the ' shift ' phace. slowly shifting from JAWS to NVDA. while I still use JAWS with my desktop, I carry around a portable NVDA that I can use whenever, and wherever I want to.also, NVDA function more efficiently with win8, so, unless FS does something drastic,... you get the point. the fact that it's free, and opensource makes it possible for NVDA to have custum made addons that make many things accessible(which are not so with JAWS). and of course, the economi governs all our actions. creating ' your own ' voice in supernova is simple enough, you change the pitch, influction etc, etc like you do with JAWS or NVDA voice adjustment, and then type in a name of your choice, and your brand new voice is ready! heck, I don't know why they bother to provide that option in there; it'd have been alright with the ones like in JAWS and NVDA.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170463#p170463

[Audiogames-reflector] a lil amateur writing: how bad is it?

2014-03-27 Thread AudioGames.net ForumOff-topic room: Chandu

a lil amateur writing: how bad is it?

well, I atempted a bit of writing, I know it's bad, but how bad is it? Here we go!PROLOG    He knew he should be sleeping, but still he knew he had to walk, something, and something large, was entirely based on his walking alone. And then suddenly, with that suddenness possible only in dreams, he was falling, falling deep, deep into a cazzam, whose bottom he could not see, whose depth he couldn’t even begin to imagine. And then, he saw it, the light that had haunted him in his sleep and wakefulness for the last 4 years of his life. “I have to reach it, I have to reach it! I’ve to find out what it is for once and for all!”Even as he completed the thought, the light came ever more near, until it culminated into a camp fire burning in a large clearing amidst a vast ocean of greenery.    As soon as he looked around, something clicked in his brain. He knew he was not supposed to know this place, but somehow, he knew this clearing, the great Hisbaldra, as intimately as his own bedroom.“Hisbaldra? Where did it come from?”    Before he could complete the thought, some unknown part of his mind, a part that felt primitive, so primitive that it seemed as old as mankind itself, took the control over, (he knew that he shouldn’t allow that, but he could not reject it, for, it felt so powerful and giving in seemed the right thing).    Something’s wrong, he thought, something’s terribly wrong. Something has happened that shall endanger the whole race. He knew it from instinct when something didn’t go right for any member of his pack. That was one of those powers which had made him an idle choice for the Datba, the leader of the race.    No, this was not just one member, not even a Rabn, this was the whole race, the whole of there great culture, development that no animal ever attained in this planet that was at the brink of collapse. He knew only one thing that could bring this kind of disaster upon them, but who among them would do that, no, they were not that selfish like the new people, the ones with 46 Godlines on each minutest of life particles. Those were brutish people, cunning, tricky, cruel, and selfish, very selfish. But, for all their wisdom and cunning, they had no power, they know not to make fire and heat, they know not to make mother earth happy and get the drink of life, instead they make her angry by hitting and digging her! They didn’t even know how to talk to plants and animals, that’s why those poor creatures behaved so wily with the cunning broots.    “No, this is not the time for idle thought, I’m the Datba, and I must do something. I must climb the Belia tree and talk to lord carmpa, yes, there’s no other way.”    The little part of his reactive consciousness did wonder what “Belia tree” was, and the answer presented itself instantly. Belia tree, the greatest tree there was ever in the earth, has been known to stand in the great holly sport of Hisbaldra even before the people calling themselves “Rixurians“ ever appeared in the face of this planet. It is believed to be the only earthly spot occupied by the greatest God of all, Lord Carmpa. The only person known to climb the great Belia tree is the great master radagask, the first Datba and leader of the race. He is known to have received his instructions from the Great Lord Carmpa himself. Since then, 4 attempts have been made to accomplish that feat, and all the 4 climbers were lost in the darkest and wildest recesses of the great Belia tree.    He took a step forward, and then another. He knew what he was about to do was improbable, even impossible. But, he was the datba, the one responsible for the whole of the Rixuriba and its people. He’d do anything within his power to protect them and the land. Just when he was about to take a third step, the skies opened up with a sound like a thousand mamuths were flying down from the heaven itself.    Thunder struck, electrifying the whole clearing and the forest beyond. the deffening boom send nearby birds and animals scattering for their lives.Even as he looked on in utter terror, the great Belia tree was wreathed with a bolt of light, that was as powerful, no, more powerful than, the tree itself. And there, in the clearing of the great Hisbaldra, in front of the Datba Ralf, that's as far as I got.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170324#p170324

vegetarianism- your views?

well, there was a rather heated discussion among my friends on what's truely vegetarian, and I thought of putting it up hear for different views.wickipedia defines the term as "A vegetarian diet is derived from plants, with or without eggs or dairy."while this defenition might seem satisfactory enough, if one were to think of the true cause, the true intend of being a vegitarian, the whole view bounces out of the confinement of the above defenition. if the intend is, (as in most cases), to avoid killing, or distruction of any lifeform, then the cunsumption of food granes will have the same effects as that of an egg, right? (both are embryos, waiting to give rise to a new life.) then a strict vegetarian must confine him/herself to a diet involving pland parts like fruits, roots, leaves and the like? and above all these, lies the age old questian of the dairy products. are those truely veg?so, what do you think?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=169941#p169941

The Death Of ScreenReader Innovation an article by former FS employee

I'm so shocked by this article written by a former Freedom Scientific employee. What do you think? The Death Of Screen Reader InnovationBy Chris HofstaderJuly 20, 2013Note: The "talx" he was talking about is the nuance Talks that symbian uses today."On the Monday of Thanksgiving week 2004, I walked into my St. Petersburg office for the last time as a Freedom Scientific employee. I had, at that point, been at the helm of the FS software engineering department for six years but, as Lee Hamilton, then CEO of Freedom Scientific told me that day, I was, “no longer capable of managing the team.” He was right, I had burned out very badly and was in terrible physical and mental shape. My repetitive strain injuries (RSI) caused me constant pain and the Vicodin prescribed by my physician had too many cognitive side effects to permit me from having a clear enough mind to perform my tasks while the steroidal injections I received for the same injuries had intense emotional side effects that felt like I was on cocaine or methamphetimine. While my final few months at Freedom Scientific were a personal disaster for me and not too good for FS or its customers, I am very proud of the many things we accomplished during my six year tenure. During that time, Eric Damery, Glen Gordon and I invented a ton of new screen reader features now seen in all such utilities on Windows. What Did We Accomplish? In my time at FS, six years ending in November 2004, our little team released versions of JAWS beginning with 2.51 (a minimal update to fix an authorization problem in the 40 minute demo) to JAWS 3.31, the first screen reader to add what is now the essential virtual buffer on the Internet in all screen readers to JAWS 6 the last JAWS in which I participated. In those release we added new and interesting features with each revision and pushed the user interface of screen readers forward every six months or so.In that period at Freedom Scientific we:‧ Invented the virtual buffer concept for delivering web information to JAWS users.‧ Invented the idea of querying applications through a private interface to gather and present information to our users – a concept used today in JAWS, Window-Eyes, NVDA, System Access and Orca screen readers.‧ Provided the first ever ways of reading charts and graphs in a major screen reader.‧ Advanced usability of office suites in a way never previously seen in a screen reader.‧ Invented the now ubiquitous “QUick Keys” style of navigating web pages more efficiently.‧ Added the JAWS “Speech and Sounds Manager” for adding tonal augmentations to information, thus, expanding the number of simultaneous semantic dimensions enjoyed by users.‧ Added features to “intelligently” skip beyond repeated information on web pages.‧ Added features to recognize similar documents and spreadsheets and automatically apply a set of adjustments for reading the data.‧ And many more innovations in screen reading user interfaces that you can find by looking up the “What’s New” sections of the release notes for these JAWS releases..Returning To WindowsI hadn’t used a Windows computer or a Windows screen reader in more than five years but, recently have found that VoiceOver on Macintosh can’t provide the level of support I need so, I downloaded and installed VMWare Fusion, Windows 7 and NVDA. Once everything was up and running, I started exploring this terrific free screen reader. The first thing I noticed was that NVDA has adopted many of the ideas that we invented in JAWS. I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized that, thankfully, most of our innovations happened before FS became crazy about patent applications and aggressive lawsuits so our most important ideas seem to have made it to other screen readers and it’s nice to see my work so widely accepted in virtually all Windows screen readers and in Orca on the GNU/Linux platform.I continued to read the NVDA documentation to see what new and noteworthy concepts have been invented in the nine years since I walked out of Freedom Scientific on that November morning. The first thing I found was a gesture based navigation system, a notion first introduced by Apple in VoiceOver for iOS and adopted by NVDA first and, based on statements made at CSUN this year, will be added to JAWS this autumn. I looked further and found nothing new. I read up on JAWS, once the hands down leader in innovation and found nothing new there in many years either. So, in a decade, the only new ideas in screen readers have come not from a small, highly focused screen reader company but, rather, from a mainstream super power. Ted Henter’s prediction that big mainstream companies making screen readers would result in a failure to innovate seems to be partially true, Apple innovated at first but has allowed the OSX version of VoiceOver to deteriorate and they haven’t expanded on really good ideas that are present but incomplete but, contrary to

this atitude, I suppose, is mostly due to lack of avaireness/knowledge.when I joined my currend school, (anormal school), the students displayed emotions ranging from pity, to disgust, to downright fear, as if I were a monster from the neighbouring galaxy. I don't know why, may be because they were just adolosents, and thus more openminded, it took me only about two months to become quite good friends with all of them, and tell you what, if anyone of them sees another blind guy, they would, in all probability, not treat them preferencially.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=150660#p150660

symbolic representation of disabilities, what do you think?

since ancient times, symbols were used to portray different things. but the use of such symbols to indicate disability is a quite modern concept. today, we use whealchaires to indicate some kind of inability to walk/moov indipendendly, whitecanes to signify blindness, etc. I live in a country where organisations provide plackets to low vision people as an indication of their "status".this lead me to think about the use/ importants/ nead of such symbols.on one hand, they help others to know that we're disabled and thus help them to behave acordingly.on the other, these "symbols" sometimes act as the magnets of trouble, drawing unwanted attention, and possibly bullying from the croud.and for exactly the same reasons, there has never been an answer to the questians like "should there be a symbol to indicate disabled?" and "should it be legalised?"so what do you guys think?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=150414#p150414

breaking news: using windows has just become more accessible!

dear friends, I'm so happy to know & share this very wonderful, latest & hottest news here. Our enslavement on having to depend on sighted asistance in formatting/installing windows has now been over. Yes, of course, now we have become totally independent that we can install and repair the booting process of windows by a talking pre-installation utility that has just been released.this can be done via a flash drive or other opticle devices. It sounds extremely fascinating that we can boot up & repair the window components without having sighted assistance.
