Re: Ways to try out Windows - free and legal

Nice job Gellman. I do have one request though. I really think there needs to be a way to install xp on the actual hardware that is being used. The PE environment is fine, but i still would like a way to install xp if at all possible. The problem XP installation is tricky without spoken feedback, even though its certainly possible. Xp is picky about partitions and the way it boots, so its not always easy to find out if an error occurs during installation. I think what still kind of bugs me is why does modern windows require at least 2 gigs of ram to run? Sure, hardware has evolved, but who really cares about the arrow graphics of 7, or the modern UI of 8? While I can use it just fine, I cant help but miss the days of only needing 512 MB of ram, and an install disc was less that a gig. While Microsoft says you can run windows 7 on a gig of ram, just try, it crawls. Why not just release a modern xp, same look, same feel, maybe some performance tweaks for current hardware, but keep the folder structures and everything. Im truly going to miss XP from a productivity stand point, and of course, playing old games from the dos days, and games programed with vb6 was easy. While I could go round and round with these points, I think what I really want from any operating system is ultimate customization without having to click around 20 times to get to the heart of the OS. On this machine right now, im running windows 8.1, no
t to bad, but I would be just as happy, if not more, to run XP without this deadline.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=168094#p168094

Re: Training Centers

At rstrunk: Sorry for my ranting, I see your much more level headed and aware than most NFB officials I have had the pleasure of talking to. My acultist comment was a little over the top, ill just put that on the table right now. But it would seem from the outside, that the NFB does indeed want to train lemmings, and I say this more of the individuals who have noted this in there stories of personal experiences at training centers. I personaly was very mainstreamed my whole life, only going to one local training center in my state for a month, which did help me brush up on some basic living skills. Believe me, I realize I am far from perfect, and could probably use more training, but it is difficult to stay positive when you hear of others not having the best quality NFB experience. Im sure if you poke around forums like this one for NFB topics, you will realize my point. I simply feel that blind people would be in the best situation if they attempted to integrate with
the sighted world as much, and as soon as possible, so that we as a society will have one less area that devides us. I knew a blind woman who told me that going to schools for the blind until she was an adult was the worst thing she ever did, as only hanging around only blind people gave her a very limited view of the real world. Those schools and training centers did not give her the social skills that she needed to interact with sighted peers effectively, and she applauded my efforts at public school and beyond. Again, im not down on the NFB as a whole, I realize that people need training, but perhaps, there needs to be a new approach that includes society integration and preparation for harsher challenges like avoiding being stereotyped, and placed in a nice little box to be labeled by society.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167080#p167080

Re: Training Centers

Ok, this may sound a little more harsh than my speaking tone would suggest. I feel that an organization who cant even provide career training options is a joke. While learning basic living skills, I would want options to learn how to build and repair computers, or take a course in computer hardware at the very least. I would expect such an organization would have many different options besides would shop? Seriusly? Im going to go out on a limb here and say that there are most likely a very few number of people who would have interest in such things. While I understand that this might be a confidence boost for some, again I want options, I dont want to be force fed projects that NFB feels that I need to be successful. I also feel that totally blind people like myself should be able to opt out of the sleep shades, its pointless, sorry. I could understand needing to level the playing field a little. But if you have no vision at all, why bother? Ill stick
to what works for me personally, receiving my training from friends and family, not an organization who expects me to play follow the leader, and be molded in to there image Blind power baby! Sure, if it works for you, rock on, but I think the acultist attitude of the NFB is well documented and laughable. We arent in the 1950s any more, blind people get out, have hobbys, and, from what I have observed on this forum, pretty modernized and educated. The NFB needs to be open to this, and offer more options, and not only living skills, but possible training programs for career oriented people. With xp though, you cant do this, as the installer is not compatable with newer versions of windows. So, the talking PE gets things started for you, the rest is easy. That was how i got in to the series as a whole, and i have some great memories of playing those games at various arcades in my state. I also miss old tech. I remember my first computer, an old compaq desktop with windows 98 SE. That machine lasted several years, eventually getting an XP update, and trucking right along until the motherboard died. I have recently got in to buying older machines, and upgrading them, so they perform almost like new. I really can appreciate how far tech has come. I remember in the 90s how owning a computer was a big deal, almost like a status statement. I can even remember the dos days, and the games i played as a young kid on those systems. Yep, my windows 7 experience helped to make windows 8 have practically no learning curve. I do appreciate the boot times, and general snappyness of the operating system. I heard a rumor that a future windows release will lower hardware requirements, which means windows could run on some pretty low powered stuff. I guess we will see. Re: Locked Out of My House

To be honest, i wish we still had the feel of windows xp in a modern version of windows. Im pretty tech savi, but i can see how old school versions of windows had it right a lot of the time. With xp on its way out, i find myself feeling frustrated that i dont have a choice of interface, or running modern windows on very little computer, or as much computer as i want. My point is, i think it would be pretty cool to have a xp feeling system that could run on something like a netbook or chromebook. I would also like to turn around and run that same windows on a powerful gaming machine, with no detectable difference in load times or performence. Im frustrated because i really dont have a choice on my windows experience. Microsoft practically threatens everyone who just wants to stick with xp, or hell, some people still really like windows 98 for musical production. Im starting to understand the worlds frustrations with microsoft, and i can
9;t blame them. Take choice away from the computer user, and the computer user gets fed up pretty quickly. If linux was 100 percent stable, and didnt have broken accessibility in certain areas, i would have all my machines on the platform. But the fact is, im comfortable, and require windows.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165956#p165956

On this forum, i always gathered that it was more of a joking term, not a hate one. Now for words like fag and retard, you bet ill ban someone who abuses them. For more serius flaming, i usually give a one time warning and then the person in question is gone if they keep it up. I think i have only put a ban on like 2 people who deserved it. So perhaps, the problem isnt quite as dramatic, or as wide spread at the end of the day. I do know that people will get angry, and start tossing around insults if they feel that there personal values are being questioned, i feel that it is just simply human nature to defend your personal beliefs. Im guilty of this as well, im human after all, even though i try to be a good moderator around here. The only thing we can truly do i feel, is just handle issues as they come up. No need to

Wallow in your own stupidity? Now come on, thats pretty damn insulting if i do say so. I strongly hold to my observation that intelligence is not particularly reflected by college course work, for the simple reason that that fancy degree you got, wont tell your employer how much on the job experience you have. Now granted, more technical degrees might reflect intelligence more, but a psych or liberal arts degree isnt going to cut it in real world experience. Also, that piece of paper doesnt tell people how your social skills are, or how easily you adapt to on the job change. Lets not even factor in the chances of being highered now a days if you are blind. Seriusly considering studying, working, or visiting in Japan, thoughts

Like many, my first exposure to Japanies culture in some asspect was through Anime, or mentions of samurai in various types of media. However recently, i began to heavily study the culture of Japan, and listen to other Americans experiences on what it was like to live in Japan. Yes i know, culture shock would probably be a big thing to overcome, as well as learning the language. However, i have thought of going to the country to study the language, and use it by interacting with the people. This plan of mine is all theoretical at this point, and i have not taken any action to further this line of thinking as of yet. I completely understand that money will be an issue. If anyone knows of any grants, or blind organizations who support trips to Japan in any form please let me know. I am also aware that the culture is very traditional, and many of the phillisophical beliefs that the culture holds will take adapting to. In other words, Anime isnt seen in the same light as i
t is here in America. But i would truely like to learn more about the culture, tour the big cities, and ride the bullet train. Any thoughts, anyone want to talk me out of it and give me a dose of reality, lol. Any comments welcome.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=161267#p161267

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Dark, i think another asspect to consider is security concerns. How secure do you think your xp box will be in 5, 10 years? Anti virus is one thing, but what if someone hacked the microsoft update feature once support went away, and you were subjected to a backdoor atack of some kind? This is just a quick example but its something to think about. If anything, just upgrade to vista, you could switch the start menu and folders to classic mode, which is basically the XP interface. For whatever reason, this feature wasnt in windows 7. Vista support ends in 2017, so that would give you a few more years of a secure system. My concern is that once the operating system receivs no more patches, how safe will you be? If there were 3rd party patches, hell, you could be perfectly content on xp for like another 10 years. I certainly understand your concerns, but i wouldnt want to hear that you got your system hacked and information compromised. Thats something no one wa
nts to go through. But, thats just my thoughts on the matter. The only reason i can afford to keep my systems up to date and upgraded is because i get free microsoft products through my school. I have heard that places like hospetals and similar businesses still run XP, and may take a while to migrate there systems over to 7 for cost reasons. This is where it could get tough for them, because there wont be any more security patches. I guess people could move to 7 over time, but before you know it, microsoft will be saying, all people need to be running windows 8, because support for 7 will be ending. I dont think people should be punished for still running older hardware that is still on XP, it would be nice if a 3rd party company still offered patches until most people could be in a spot to afford new hardware. I swear i think someone overclocked the pintium 4 processor in there because windows says its running at 3.8 GHZ, which i was not expecting. Anyway, i love the design, as it is a small form factor machine, yet the parts are all full sized desktop components. So, ill start by upgrading the memory to about 4 gigs, as that is the max the proprietary Dell board will support. Computer hardware upgrades and tinkering question

Hey guys. Just wonder how many folks have got dirty with there computers, not afraid to put there hands in there and swap out a drive, ram, or motherboard. I have been learning slowly about all this, as i recently aquired a desktop to play around with and use as a secondary machine. The main board wont have to be touched for quite some time i think but i would like to perhaps upgrade other components. Ram doesnt seem to hard, same with the harddrive. Im approaching this from a blind persons perspective of course. How about power supply and CPU upgrades though? Does anyone have any experience with these tasks? Heat syncs, thirmal paste, fans, all of it? Dont be afraid to go in to detail on how you accomplished tasks of this type by yourself, or with only a little help. Any tips for doing these tasks by myself would be greatly appreciated, as i dont want to rely on someone with eyeballs all the time. Hi. Well, im a little facinated with the whole Azog plotline, mostly because i re read the hobbit after seeing the first film last year. I know they amped up the actual action sequences in true jackson fashion, but i cant help but wonder if Azog could have played a bigger role in the main story as well? I know, I know, many folks are very happy with the main plot not being altered at all, but that was one thing that i would have thought might have been cool to read either in a return of the king apindix form, or similar.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=153943#p153943

Re: Mac verses Windows

I have been on the fence with the idea of buying a mac for the last year or so. On the one hand, i think its possible to do just about everything you could do on windows with some research and know how. However, from what i gather, this can be a pain at times, and require a lot of work arounds and such. I think if i ever buy a mac, it would be literally a computer to simply screw around on, and get as much out of the mac OS as i could. I have 3 windows machines here, so its not like im lacking windows in my life. I honestly think mac would just be a compliment to windows in a way, doing the same things differently. Of course, one could ask, then why bother even buying a mac? Well, im a tech nerd, and i love toys, lol.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=152879#p152879

Ok, guys, as a moderator, im going to step in real quick. First of all Camlorn, dude, take a step back and recognize that everyone has a different style of programming, and different skill levels. I know you bring up programming as a good job consideration here and there on the forum. So, lets say your on a project with a dev team. How long do you think you would last on that project if you called a team members code lame? Or your bosses code lame? Just something to think about. And Ethan, i know that his comments were not to your liking, but getting fired up and posting publically is a bad idea. If something like that happens again ever, just cool down first, and respond a bit more professionally, it will help you to avoid these types of situations.
