[Audiogames-reflector] Internet Archive puts classic 70s and 80s games online

Internet Archive puts classic 70s and 80s games online

At the moment, the games don’t have sound.National Monitor, Craig Manning | December 28, 2013Who needs to keep old video game consoles in their basement, collecting dust, when all of the classic games those consoles supported are playable online? Who needs to spend money amassing a sprawling video game collection when older games can be accessed on the web for a fee of approximately nothing? Those are the questions being posed by the Internet Archive which, according to a report published on Friday by Digital Spy, recently made a huge collection of older video games available and playable online for free. Don’t get too excited yet to play through all of those Super Nintendo and N64 games from your youth, though: at the moment, the so-called Internet Archive Console Living Room, is only dedicated to the most retro of gaming consoles. So far, the Console Living Room includes sections for five different gaming consoles, the Atari 2600, the Atari 7800 ProSystem, the ColecoVision, the Magnavox Odyssey, and the Astrocade. The Atari consoles are still remembered fondly by many gamers, while some of the other models have been a bit more forgotten over time. Regardless of how successful the gaming systems were back in the day, however, hundreds of their games have now been modified for emulated computer and internet use. From “Donkey Kong” to “Pac-Man” and from “Asteroids” to old licensed games like “Spider-Man” and “The Return of the Jedi,” the Internet Archive Console Living Room will allow players to recapture the timeless throwback feel of 1970s and 1980s gaming. At the moment, the games don’t have sound, removing the beeps and blips that would truly posit the Internet Archive Console Living Room as a vintage and nostalgic experience. However, Jason Scott, one of the Internet Archive’s curators suggested that the Console Living Room section would be receiving some overhauls and improvements over the next few months. Sound will be one of those improvements, as will an expansion of the game library. Could players see games from more recent consoles, such as early Nintendo or Sega models, make their way to the Archive over the next few years? That remains to be seen, but if the experiment is well received, it’s a possibility. However, before the Archive can get Nintendo, it needs to get through the early stages of implementing the Console Living Room as a widely used and respected tool. Scott says he wants the instant availability of the games to open up opportunities for “commentary, education, enjoyment, and memory.” However, it’s currently unclear whether or not the Archive has permission to emulate every game it currently has in its collection. Some retro game developers may prefer to port their own games over to smartphones so that they can make a profit off the retro gaming revival.https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroomURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=159872#p159872

Re: Internet?

I think slj has got it here. Wifi means more than one machine, so theres no earthly reason you should have to take turns on the internet with your brother. Have a machine with the capacity and its no problem, well at least the internet isnt a problem, how you relate to your brother and your mum is another matter. To be honest taking care of your computer and wireless equipment is your responsability, especially if they are provided by a charity. Get a single bag where you can keep your laptop, your wireless dongol and everything else altogether, then no problem. This will serve you well for later, since at university you will need to take your own machine around, its part of life particularly if your a visually impared person and rely on your laptop for basic writing or communication via E-mail that other people might do with a pen. So as Slj said, if you cant find your wireless dongal, buy another and take good care of
it, though how well you get on with your family might be something else.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155454#p155454

Re: Internet?

OK. i am going to attack both angles.Wi-fi: yes,, I agree with them. Just simply go buy a new one, and keep track of it.As far as your brother and the internet, heres what you do. I would assume that you are the most techy of the family, so here goes:1. you will need some sighted help for this part. Without him knowing, you need to go into his computer, and find his mac address. I can find some instructions for you if you need. Write this down you will use it later.2. at night (or when no one is home, or whatever) plug your computer into the wi-fi router.3. connect to the router, it is usually:192.168.1.14. go to something that says access restrictions, or something like that. It is different for every router.5. set up a restriction in such a way where if your brothers mac address (the number you wrote down earlier) tries to connect to the router, it will not let him on the internet.do the same for your mom if you think it is necessary.6. put everything back so they wont notice in the morning or when they come home.Youve just stopped everyone from getting on the internet, and they will not know its you. If they arent as techy theyll just think that somethings wrong with the box.If you need help doing this, just let me know on here and Ill work out more specific instructions.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155460#p155460

Re: Internet?

Yeah, using a router would solve this problem. As long as theres access for wifi on all the computers, you really shouldnt need any sort of plug in.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155490#p155490

[Audiogames-reflector] Internet?

2013-11-13 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: garrett

Internet?

Hello.Well, I think I just screwed myself up rurally. I had a fight with my 15 year old brother Skyler. Well he and I were having a fight over who could use the internet. I have a laptop that doesnt work with the WiFi. So he messaged mom. Then she said I could use the internet until 5:30 pm and then get off. She said I never had homework wich is why I have an f in math. First of all, I dont ever get homework because I take online classes in a trailer. And second, I dont hav an f in math. I wouldnt lie about that. I dont li. And third, he cant make me stop using the internet. Hes 15, only 2 years older than me. He cant tell me what to do. Im living daily life like the rest of you guys. So heres where everything comes into the picture. Why does Skyler get to libe his daily life, but I dont? When it comes to this, hes just as selfish as I am. Ok, heres the main core of the problem. Why is my WiFi not
working? Well, Ill tell you why. I got my computer from computers for the blind. I told the lady that I wanted WiFi for my computer. I also said Id like to have NVDA as the scren reader. My WiFi was controlled by a small USB devise, smaller than a simcard for those old time phones. If I lost it, Id be disabled from using the WiFi until it was found, or I some how got another one. Now, Im sure you can guess what happened. Im sure now its not posible to get another one. Yep, now I have to take turns for the little half wit. What the heck was he thinking? I should unplug the router, or better ye, shut of the swich on the socket that operates it. Swiching it back once the hour for him is up. In the mean time, where can I get another one of those WiFi things? Im fed up with Skyler being so selfish for the internet.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=15530

Re: Internet?

Well, why would you need one anyway? You can always just have someone download a copy of NVDA and your good.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155321#p155321
