Totally off topic, but I was thinking about my baby balrog pokemon I mentioned earlier, and why hasn't someone done a pun on that demon to make an actual pokemon? Balfrog is a huge frog wreathed in flames. Its skin is covered in biologically engineered slime that is highly flammable. If it touches you, you become much more vulnerable to fire attacks. It sports a long whip-like tongue covered in wicked barbs with which it can ensnare an opponent, bringing him into contact with its deadly skin. A mighty pair of hind legs on this beast allow it to leap great distances, and once airborn, a pair of membranous wings on its back can allow it to glide upon the superheated drafts that its flaming body creates, though they are too delicate to perform actual flight. Sadly there isn't. The problem being that we haven't done this before. We actually just talked about this at a team meeting last night—that sometimes we think something is going to take us "a lot of time" and it gets done in two days; other times we think something is going to be "a quick fix" and it takes us weeks. It's just so hard to predict. I will say that the major unfinished elements of the game are progressing at a good pace right now and we don't have any major hold-ups like we've had at some points. But that's about all I've got for you, sadly.

Assault: That may say more about your assumptions about the cost of game development than anything. Especially if you think about the fact that people working on a game probably want to make something for their time. Once you take into account writing the game, paying the voice actors, designing the soundscapes, processing the voiceover and effects, programming and implementing it all, and then compensating everyone involved in making that process happen, I could easily see a game like A Blind Legend costing $40k or more. I don't even want to think what AHC would cost if everyone wasn't volunteering so much time and personal resources...

For the quality of the game when I played through it, unless they changed it... it didn't seem like a game worth $43k in development funds. But that's just my personal opinion... others are obviously different which is why the game got so much support. Maybe I should give it another go.

By audiogame standards, this is the very definition of a Tripple A game. I don't think anyone else has ever spent $10K on a game before... and for our market, this is most definitely a tripple A blockbuster of a game. Even by indie standards, this is no small feat to accomplish... most mainstream indie games aren't even this polished.

Just to clarify some of the debate—by saying AHC isn't triple-A we aren't saying anything about the quality. We're talking about the size of the developer, and resources involved in the game's creation. Like assault_freak said, $10k could never fund a triple-A game. Heck, it couldn't even pay the salary for one of the people working on a triple-A game.So since everything is relevant, one could say that by audio-game standards, AHC is a triple-A game because the time and resources involved are top-tier. I don't know if that would be a true statement, but it would be flattering. But in the overall game market, no indie game is triple-A—the two are basically mutually exclusive. If you are a developer big enough to be making a triple-A title, you aren't considered an indie. Hopefully that clears things up. Goodness, how do we get on these tangents?

Yes, that is true for sure. But the point that Joseph and I are trying to make is that this is exactly what they are trying to do; bring this game to both communities, so you can't exclude it from standards of a community that is more used to mainstream games, even indie ones, of higher quality than we are in this community. so we can't forget about the considerations and expectations of half the audience we are trying to reach. And in the end, this is not an audio game... because it will have graphics. An audio game, as the definition implies, is a game with only sound and no form of visual, which this game is not. this is the first accessible video game that is going to be marketted to both blind and sighted alike, although Shadow Line technically preceeds it.

Without paying attention to things that are outside the blind comunity scope, like graphics and the like, 1 dollars can easily fund a normal audio game that's meant to be a big project. It's an audio game in the end. Regarding price yes, I do totally agree with you, if you looked at most audio games prices here from a general perspective, they are not suitable, for being them considered as games that are being developed by an indie dev. But blind people are willing to pay such high prices because, they're wanting to have the same experience sighties are having.

A tripple A title would be a game like Bioshock or Final Fantasy Xv. As Joseph said, AHC, as good as it sounds, is considered an indie game because it's developed by an independent group of people, not one particular company. $1 couldn't fund a tripple A title... which is why they can afford to charge so much more than this game. As has already been said, people are surprised at this game costing so little because in this case, we aren't going by standards for the audiogame market... a game like GMA Tank Commander or Troopanum 2, which are both $35, would be worth maybe $10-15 if it was sold on the mainstream market.

Well again, it's little surprise that people would be willing to pay more—because the audio game pricing model is, in general, a good deal steeper than it is in the indie marketplace at large. It's a question of supply and demand. We have a much smaller supply of games, so they are in much higher demand, so we're prepared to pay much more than our sighted peers would pay for the same experience.

[ a-t ]#120: That may seem crazy, but to the indie game market at large, outside the audio game world, seeing $30-$40 for an indie game is practically unheard of. If we were pricing based simply on the amount that people pay for other audio games, and a comparison between our game and those, I would say we could very comfortably charge $40 or more. But we would probably not sell any copies of the game to sighted gamers at that price point. After all, why are people going to spend $40+ on an indie game when they can get a triple-A title for the same price? So keeping the price close to the standard for comparable indie games actually gives us more chance of profit in that market.

That's the goal. We don't want A Hero's Call to be the pinnacle—we want it to be the stepping stone.Just a quick note on price: we haven't set anything officially yet, but in our conversations we've come to the conclusion that it probably wouldn't be wise to stray outside the $15–$20 range, simply because anything higher than this is almost unheard of for an indie game. Games specifically for the blind can get away with charging $35–$40 or more because there's such a hungry market—and they also need to charge more since their market is sos mall. Since we plan on marketing the final full-graphics release to the indie marketplace as large, we want to keep our price point as close to the standard for that market as possible. So you can all thank the indie market for the low price you'll be paying.

This will definitely be something to celebrate in the english market. I haven't really gotten into rpgs, there not being many good ones in English in the last 15 years I've been around the audiogaming scene... but this is definitely drawing me in. The only games that are on this level are in Japanese, the text-based rpgs from morokuma and Shadow Line. Shadow Line would technically be in a different category as it's more an action rpg.

As I told him on Twitter, better to save 20 to 30 dollars as the game might not be exactly 15 dollars. Thumbs up to Rich68. While I do agree that this comunity is kind and awesome, but some people are a bit sensitive and More inclined to criticism on things that don't worth, and a lot of their replies are misunderstandings and judgment rushes, and that's actually what prevents me from posting some things, avoiding pointless criticism. Yes, Abdulla was asking if the beta testing stage has started or not. Obviously yes, it has started according to what they've posted answering him on Twitter.

I personally don't think Joseph has to justify anything. He clearly said in the first post: Please allow 1–2 weeks for us to go through applications and get back to you, and understand that, depending on how many applications we receive, not everyone who applies will be able to participate in testing the game.I didn't make it on to the team, and honestly I'm all the more excited to be able to play the finished product.

I want to reply to SirBadger's questions, not because I feel that we have any obligation to justify our decisions, but because I want to make sure that what we said isn't unintentionally misrepresented. First off, yeah, we did a stock reply as it would have taken an obscene amount of time to write individual replies. But we didn't specifically say that if you didn't get chosen, you didn't have the skill requirements we were looking for. In fact I made a point to say that several of those who weren't chosen would make great testers. So yes, because of numbers we did have to turn down testers who have skills or experience that would lend themselves toward testing. Why decisions were made varied from person to person because every person brought something a little different to the table. Maybe one person would be fairly comparable to a tester already selected, but with slightly less experience. Maybe one person had lots of experience testing apps 
 but not so much experience testing games, or lots of experience playing fighters and less experience playing exploration-oriented games. Basically we took the applications, narrowed them down to all those we think would make good testers, and then selected from that bunch to give ourselves the most well-rounded team possible. Priority was given to those who backed the project, but it wasn't always a deciding factor, or at least not the sole deciding factor.

Just because you backed the kickstarter that was no indication that you would get picked. I did as well, and didn't get picked and I'm completely happy with that. The email gave me a response as to why, and that's all I care about. Joseph got back to us, we didn't get picked, we wait like everyone else. Move on.

Keep in mind he probably got a couple hundred replies. When I was looking for LWorks testers I received no joke almost 200 responses. He can't take everyone.

well I got my response and I respect your decision. I guess it would be too long and complicated to send individual emails to people but 4 people apart from myself all got the same stock reply.using a phraise along the lines of: "you do not meet the skill requirements we are looking for.I would be interested to know exactly what those skills are as at least 2 of us who got rejected have a lot of previous testing experience, used to play visual RPG games and have a good grounding in audio games too. I suspect it comes down to people who didn't back the kickstarter project being put to the back of the list.if this is the case, I can well understand why that would be the case but it could also come back to bite you. I wasn't aware of the project when that was going on and I'm guessing a lot of others weren't either. but giving places to loyal followers who donated seems to me like what you will get is what you don't want and t
 hat is people who are so desperate to play the game, testing will not be an issue.anyway, I still support the project and I can't wait for it to be available. just had to throw my thoughts in.

As much as I'd love to beta test, I don't know exactly what I could do to help. I'm not a good tester, I haven't tested anything sense 2013. I paid for the game on kick starter, and that's the only thing I can really do. The last thing I can do to help you guys is to wish both yourselves and the beta testers good luck. Yeah we don't really have an official closing date, mostly because if someone applies later who we'd absolutely love to have on the testing team, there's nothing stopping us from adding them, whatever the date may be. But in general I'm hoping to get through all these applications and make some decisions by the end of next week.

He didn't give any official closing date from what I remember, but he did say that if you send in an application to allow a week or two to go through applications and decide.
