Re: CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

I just updated CHARM.It's a bit tedious, but it has global hotkeys now. You can edit them in the settings, I'll still make this more meaningful. Also, CHARM x86 works too now, I hope. It'll also try to fix any possible errors itself, so more people should be able to run it now.Let's see how this goes.

Re: CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

The X86 executable is broken, yeah. If you look at the size it's 14 kb. That's definitely not right, considering the x64 one is, like, 300?Not sure what happened there. If you get the program stopped working dialog, probably some directX component or what not isn't working right. Although you're the first one who seems to have this issue.

Tried the 32-bit version of the in between releases version with Vista. This one simply doesn't run at all. I'm guessing it just closes without any displayed errors. Rebuilt the performance information. The program stilled closed without any notice. Tried the previous version just to see if it worked after rebuilding. It still crashes.Hope this helps!

Hi,Sorry for the spam, but I think I just figured out the problem. If you run the above executable and CHARM still fails to work for you, do this simple step which CHARM, in the next version, will ask to do automatically.Open a cmd command prompt.change into your system32 directory.Type the following command:lodctr /RIf you get a message similar to Successfully rebuilt performance counter setting from system backup store, CHARM should proceed to work fine! Please tell me if this works!

To anyone who had issues running CHARM before. This is an in between versions version, so some features are halfly implemented, like the saving of settings, keyboard shortcuts (CTRL SHIFT F11 for toggle), and custom volume in the menu. However, the most notable change should be that I think I found a fix for everyone who had problems running it before. Also, some people still run lower spec machines where it wouldn't make much sense to install a 64 bit OS, even if it were technically possible. I'm not talking about netbooks necessarily, just older desktops or laptops that don't support more than 2GB of RAM.I just tried this program, and I think it's great. Using Windows Vista 32-bit, and after selecting a pack the program crashes. Windows puts me in that dialog that says the program stopped working and Windows is looking for a solution to the problem. This is running the 32-bit version that was just compiled recently. Vista is on its way out this year, but thought you'd want to know anyway for debugging purposes.

Haha. I should do that. The BMP is the icon the program associates with the system tray.If you get the errors, it means your PDH is broken. I'm at this moment unsure how to fix this problem, but I'm tracing it.Some updates as to what's been happening. The program now saves and loads your settings. However, there is still a problem with loading soundpacks, where values will stop updating after you select a new pack, that's the main reason I didn't update the files yet. I need to figure that out.I'm thinking of having the announcement messages self voicing for percentage of cores, disk and RAM. This might make it more universal. I'll also add SAPI and screen reader support.I'm having trouble registering global hotkeys, but I think I can get around this as well.I'm also adding a per core sound option, so you can have individual files for each core. This might be a bit messy, and I'm not sure
what to do if you have more cores than sounds. I think what I'll go for now is to simply wrap around.Oh and of course an update notification.Once all of this is working I'll release the update. But as long as I can't figure out why the values stop updating after you select a soundpack we'll have to wait. LOL. Stupid PDH...Update: I got keys to work! So that's one problem less. LOL

Re: CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

Hi.I really like the program. Here are a lot of comments and questions:I don't understand the CPU output. It gives me a huge number in percent, which don't make much sense to me.It would be nice to access the program from a normal window instead of the system tray, because Windows b does not always show the program. Is there an other way to access the system tray? I'm using Windows 10 and NVDA.It would be awesome to have hotkeys which reads out the cpu usage, disk and ram so you easily can check this. The percent makes more sense to me than the sounds, but I also find the sounds helpful.I find it difficult to get how the program gives information about the different cpu cores. Is there any way to have this information shown in text?I can't disable the ram, disk or cpu information in the program. Nothing happens when I press enter in the menu.It would be fantastic to have the same program for Mac as well. Thanks for
an awesome program. I look forward to see a new update.

This is a really neat program, and I've got it on both of my machines.  I sent you some tweets with some suggestions to it, if you didn't get them, I can post them here.  Something that Goldfingas asked me to let you know of is with Kai's suggestion, add a way to silence and restart the soundscapes with the hotkey.  So, push to play, but also a toggle if users wanted to turn sounds on or off.  The other thing that he recommended, was maybe a volume adjuster for on the fly use instead of going back and forth to the system tray.

Re: CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

I actually really love this little tool, as it gives me a constant view of what's happening. As a test, I loaded up Street Fighter V while it was running, and really could hear the cores rev up. I do have a few requests / inquiries, however. Is there a plan in future to have it run silently? I know that sounds counter intuitive to the application's design, but I figure you would then tie a hotkey to it that would play the soundscape for you for as long as the key was pressed, or for a preset amount of time in the prefs.ini file. Are there plans in future to allow a person to define a sound per core? This way, you can have core1.xxx through core###.xxx, and it would just use as many as were required. This prevents sound overlaps. It's much easier to distinguish unique sounds in a panorama of multiple audible events. The CHARM system tray has resource details when you look at it. Can this be tied to a h
otkey to directly report it to your screen reader API?I fully realize this is version 0.1, so please don't take these requests and inquiries as feature demands or criticisms, they're just things I would love to see in future. It's an awesome and informative app as is, and I'm only hoping to see it improved even more! Thanks,Kai

Re: CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

Hmm. Seems it can't run on 32-bit systems. Awesome idea though. I can see a lightsaber pack working well with it.

Oh. Yeah. To accurately calculate RAM, the program has to be compiled against the correct architecture. Here is an executable for 32 bit windows. Just put this in it's directory. Thanks for reminding me, I will include this in the next zip.CHARMx86.exe

CHARM - Customizable, Helpful Audio Resource Monitor

First of all, thanks Pitermach for the name. Haha! No, sorry, it's not a new game. Yet. But it is a fun tool that the odd one or another might enjoy. I certainly do.CHARM is a tool that turns your computer's usage into sound. Either each individual core, hard panned from left, first core, to right, last core, or just an average of all cores, your RAM and disk usage all shape the sound you hear. It's nothing too special, but if you were ever curious as to what was going on in your computer in realtime and couldn't see any of the fancy HUD's that are available, this might be something to try. And hey, you can make your own packs!I'm not going to say too much more and let the page speak for itself. It's a pretty dirty documentation, but you should read it before getting started. You can also download the program from there. If you find any bugs or have any sugge
stions, let me know! And yeah I'm still making games. Yeah RTR's gonna get an update here soon-ish. I would talk more but hey, don't wanna steal CHARM the stage!<3
