Re: Classic Windows Sim

Hmm, sounds like a deeper issue with Windows. I run the setup, hit the Windows key, select "classic style" in the settings screen that appears, and voila! File Explorer isn't too bad either...usually...and this is on Win10.

Re: Classic Windows Sim

I have no idea how Classic Shell is supposed to work. I run the setup... then what? Nothing changes automatically and there's no desktop icon or way to launch it from the start menu-esque thing in Windows 8, and when I use command prompt to try and run ClassicShellStartMenu.exe, nothing happened (although my computer did lock up not a minute later, but honestly that's probably a coincidence. Did I mention I have a less-than-impressive computer?)(That, and I liked the idea of a random classic Windows scheme every time I rebooted. )And yeah, I do use VLC more often than this. I mostly use this program for the slim start menu and the fastest file explorer I've used since a fresh install of XP professional (if that). I had some ogg/wav programs lying around that I made for quickly searching/testing certain things, so I decided to add them to the sim for the
fun of it.(If anyone's wondering why I don't use a VM... I tried, but it was too heavy to be worth it, which was one of the other big motivators behind this program.)

Re: Classic Windows Sim

So I don't mean to sound like a troll or anything, but why not just use ClassicShell and Winamp or VLC? CS is very responsive and has never given me any problems.

Classic Windows Sim

Classic Windows Sim

this is probably useless for just about everyone, but I uploaded it anyway.https://www.sendspace.com/file/ch9opmBasically, I wanted to play with the classic Windows sounds, and I wanted the classic Windows shell, and I was tired of my slow computer making all the normal ways of getting these things frustrating, so I made this.It picks a version's sound scheme to use at random; if you want to change to a specific one, use logoff (either from the start menu or from the shutdown prompt).Since alt+tab and the windows key don't work, you use ctrl+tab to switch windows, and you need to access the start button by tabbing to it and pressing enter.Again, it's very incomplete and probably buggy. I mostly got it to do everything I needed, so it's been slow adding the less important bits that would make it feel complete. (For example, you can't add things to the desktop or save playlist
s, and a lot of start menu items give you a RUNDLL message). The programs menu only looks for a few specific folders. I couldn't really get the directory names for anything I don't have installed, and didn't make it search the whole thing, so apologies if a game or program you wanted doesn't show up.It comes with a media player and file explorer ("my documents" or "my computer"), has a recent files list, and tries to open txt, rtf, html, zip, and exe files, at least (I might have forgotten a few). The controls for the media player are kinda weird. I'll have to write a command list at some point, if anyone actually wants to use it. Midis don't currently play well with playlists, but ogg and wav should be fine.In the file explorer, alt page up or alt page down should read something like a status bar. I don't suggest using this often, since any bugs I missed in there will be pretty unpleasant.Anyway, h
ope someone has fun with it. If someone actually finds its speed and responsiveness worth using for real, that would be awesome, but I'd be surprised.
