I would suggests to make the racing game in real 3d audio with realistic samples of the cars. If you need me on board let me know. I have possibilities to record engines in really complex way so you will get every single pitch of the engine.

Re: Does anyone know if KM2000 is still around and still works?

Well Tank commander is awesome and I'd recommend it just on general principles, though there aren't any other first person driving games I know of since the other complex driving sims we have are games like zero site or lone wolf which manifestly have different interfaces given the vehicles involved. though thinking about it an audio futuristic vehicle battle game, something like Cyber sled for the playstation or even older games like scorched earth would be awesome. However, there are more first person games than just Swamp, Redspot, Rtr, Tank commander and shades of doom. Sadly the site and db isn't working right now so I can't directly post a link, but other audio fp games include technoshock, audio quake, Terraformers (though that's more an adventure game than fps), a couple of Gamevial's audio flash arcade games like colonel Zeag, and quite a number of games for the Iphone including both pappasangre games, the nightjar, blindside and
a blind legend, actually last year I had to create the audio first person adventure genre just to cover games like blindside since there does seem to be an increasing amount of them.Hth.

@Phil Thanks. Yeah, I actually downloaded tank commander... I kind of really want to buy it now. The navigational features in it are quite awesome. I wish we had more games like it. I've just been having so much trouble because I've only encountered tank commander, rtr, redspot(partially), I'm not sure if it was entombed or shades of doom) and swamp as truly first person games. I haven't yet, besides tank commander, encountered a first person driving game, besides Km2000 which I just downloaded yesterday.

Re: Does anyone know if KM2000 is still around and still works?

@Steve, I do understand your point, but equally the problem with km2000 wasn't that you could turn the car 360 degrees, indeed there are plenty of mainstream racing games with a first person interface where you can! turn the car where you want just the same way you'd turn in an fps game, though obviously with completely different movement, physics, handling etc. the problem in km2000 is that the track was essentially rectangle (judging by the screenshots), but the handling of the car was just plane off if you didn't see the graphics, heck, a topdown interface is weerd even for a graphical mainstream game. Your idea with open tracks certainly isn't a bad one, heck it reminds me very much of mario cart, though obviously you'll need to firstly make it clear where the track and where offtrack is, what obstacles are around and above all have the car's handling be good enough to make the system work without either beeing so loose as to be conf
using, or too efficient so that players master it too quickly. I'd suggest the game that is most similar to what you want is actually gma tank commander, being thus far the only fully first person ground based vehicle game we've got thus far.

Re: Does anyone know if KM2000 is still around and still works?

Well, my game already has 360 degree turning, though one key press is likely to turn a car between 1 and 6 degrees and it takes several seconds to get 90... by several according to the system I mean 2 or 3. But my point is, jim kitchen's Mach 1, top speed, and sonic zoom all have the "move your car left and right but progress forward the whole time" system which, while not bad, is not the one I'm using. I already have beacons in place that one can listen to and if it's in front, you would be traveling towards it, otherwise well you know where to turn, but I was searching for that title since it sounds like it had similar goals to my game, but it did them wrong, and it would better help me design an open world style racing game than, say, Top speed. Because, think about it this way:Top speed and Mach 1, there tracks are like a long and narrow rectangle. They are limited to that shape interface. On this rectangle, there could potentially be dots (if yo
u're graphing on paper, these would represent items and obstacles) but from what I could tell, neither top speed or mach 1 had any of the sort. Anyways... on the left and right sides of the rectangle, about an inch from the outer box lines, there is a boundary. Cross and at least in mach 1, you're driving on the marbles. In other words folks, there's no way for you to get off course if you're not careful. Again, no negative criticism here, in fact I was quite addicted to mach 1 especially. And finally to the rectangle, it has bottom and top, but as you race, it is like the bottom for you goes forward. because once you cover a part of the track, there is no possibility to reverse in these games. In theory, one would ask... -- who would want to drive backwards on the track of a racing game? That's stupid!  In those games though, that's actually true. You have no need really, because what's the point? You hit all the turns and they are
mandatory to take no matter what. If you don't take the turns, you just crash. There is no possibility of getting off course and having to turn around and correct your mistake, all the while your opponents who stayed on course streaking passed without error. In the model I am creating though, the whole map is one massive square. On that square, you can go wherever you want with the car, there is no one limiting you. Within this square, there are race courses. These are marked by beacons that, if you were racing the course, you would follow if you wanted to drive it right. But say you didn't, say you wanted to take a risk and shortcut. Well, no one is stopping you, because you can turn to any direction and drive anywhere on the track, again nothing really limiting you unless there are things to crash into or fall from.  So do you guys see my point now? I'm not making a top speed style racing game. I'm trying for the open world, free movement kind.

Re: Does anyone know if KM2000 is still around and still works?

@Slj, perhaps send it to the audiogames archive for everyone to have a go at? I know they've got a couple of the code factory titles already and probably would like this one. As to the direction thing, well it actually sounds from Richard's description that the game had more serious problems than that, not just that you can turn the car around entirely, but that the controls didn't make sense. What I mean is, I gather that in km2000, instead of the car moving forward and you using the left and right arrows to angle left or right, the left and right arrows literally turn the car to the left and right with almost one press. It sounds however as if it was more a designed problem by the developers for some odd reason using a very none traditional interface for a racing game rather than a mistake anyone who was building a sound based racing game from the ground up would make, heck, judging by sonic zoom it's not even a mistake that mo
st audiogame designers would make even if they were! using graphics since most people would actually have the car handle like a car and the graphical interface of the game displayed like most racing games are, ie, that you are actually looking through the windscreen of a car your driving, if they had one.So, while I'd be interested to play km2000 just out of morbid curiosity, and while I definitely think it should be on the archive, i don't think anyone potentially designing audio racing games needs this for reference material, particularly since there are enough fairly good audio racing entries such as topspeed or even Jim Kitchin's mac 1 to try instead. I'll admit though racing isn't exactly my first choice of game genre anyway, so maybe I'm not the best person to comment on this topic.

As to the direction thing, yeah gorthalen, it's sort of weerd they missed that, though since I presume there is a way to tell how far around the track you are I presume there's a way to know if your going forward or back.I also believe there were other packs of tracks and extras for the game at one time, or at least I recall seeing them on the database though like most of code factory's stuff they've vanished.

The only thing that makes ththis game unplayable is you cannot tell which direction the car is facing. A sound at the front, and rear, would fix this problem.

Does anyone know if KM2000 is still around and still works?

Hi guys,I would like to know if KM2000, the racing game, still exists. I tried to download it from the database, but there was no links listed for it, at all. I am requesting it because as I too, am intending to create an open world racing game, however the database descriptions point out some very bad design flaws that make it impossible to play, and that a game like that isn't really ideal for the blind racer, so I'd like to see it and take note of what not to do.
