Re: Fixing A musical mess

Try quantizing the notes off and notes on. If you have the midi file, i can try to give you a hand if needed. Another thing to try if quantising doesn't work as you want it to and its not sounding right, create a click track with the tempo of the beat, and re record the track following the tick or click. I'm using pro tools here, so not sure how to do on reaper, but that it can be done it can be done. If you need a hand though, let me know.

Re: Fixing A musical mess

It comes down to you knot knowing what you're doing. How do I know this? Because I don't know what I'm doing either.

Fixing A musical mess

Fixing A musical mess

I have a rhythm and a simple melody. And the timing of the melody is all sorts of messed up. More on that in a bit. The time signature is 4/4. The track itself is based on traditional forms of Middle Eastern music. It makes use of micro tones. The rhythm was pre-programmed, basically a loop. I generally don’t like loops, but seeing as the rhythm is a traditional one which is what I’m going for, and any attempt to replicate it myself would be pointless, I used it. Therefore the rhythm’s timing is perfect. The melody is the problem. It comes down to the timing of notes being horrible. All attempts to quantize it have only made things worse. I started with trying the grid. I was able to use the grid perfectly fine in a previous track to quantize things. I think I have a basic understanding of things like eighth and 16th notes, seeing as I was able to use what I new on the previous track successfully for the most part. On this track however, none of the grid settings worked, and The less said about what happens when I put it on manual, the better. My approach has been to try to quantize the entire melody at once, although I've tried small portions, with no luck. This probably comes down to me not knowing how to quantize things properly. My very narrow understanding of quantization revolves around knowing if something is in say, eighth or 16th notes, and correcting placement of notes based on that. but that seems like an extreme oversimplification.
