A game like this would be cool. What I wish to have included is a level system, different weapons to upgrade these and free flying movement. Missions should also be included.

@16 it's not uncommon for space based games, even those that have you in a civilian setting, to include a war between several factions and for those factions to provide a way for civis to help fight in their name. Even star conquest, which draws a pretty hard line where a pilot's behavior is concerned, allows you to repell invasions and do ground missions. Although to add realism, you could first have to join a navy of some kind. I particularly liked the way smugglers 5 does it. As a civi you can contribute to the war by making lots of money and investing it into war bonds which let your faction buy stuff with them, so the more money you sink into them, the higher the effect you will have on the war. If you want to fight, you either have to enlist in your faction's navy or choose a starting profession that already starts in the military. Or you know, you can always just be a pirate and carve out your own empire. for this game however, it probably wouldn't be very feezable to have a system of war bonds, especially if there are multiple factions a player can join. I guess the best thing we could do for such a system is to handwave it entirely and say that anyone who fights for anyone else is doing mercinary duty or something. Space is a fronteer after all and guns for hire could be expected, if the setting is right.

8, you do know those are navy ships. Right? Haily, what are you coding this in? just for my own info. You can also add the ability after a while for a person to own a fleet, then human players and computer players pilot yur ships, you gain prophets, you pay then etc. You can still go do your own thing, but you still have to manage your fleet. Simba and Connor gave some pretty valid poins. Just don't rush it, take your time, and test it extensively first. Good luck with this.

Re: Gaging interest in a space MMO like death match a new beginning

Hi.Getting back to the more basics of this project, Connor already gave a pritty good example on how flying could work, I have an idea when it comes to docking to space station or planets.I would use a system you had in games like x2. What would happen is that you fly into the station and then have to aline yourself with a docking clamp. this worked by reducing your speed and pointing your nose in a specific direction, you could implement this by having to keep a beeping tone at a certain pitch that emulates verticle alinement and the same tone in the center for the horizontal alinement. In X2, flying to fast or if you didn't hit the clamp your ship would either take damage or get destroyed all together which I quite like because people then actually learn how to fly their ships.Greetings Moritz.

I never understood the obsession with Deathmatch, even though I played it for a bit, it was mostly to chat. Then again I'm pretty jaded when it comes to most games these days unless it's a really unique one. Seriously, I tried 3 different muds today and I quit all of them in half an hour of creating a character.

Re: Gaging interest in a space MMO like death match a new beginning

Classes or specialisations are generally only a good idea if you can be sure that your player base will be large and diverse, especially if this specialisation ties in with group activities. But I agree, some form of character development, like improving skills so you can get better at certain activities would be nice to have. If missions or combat assignments are ever a thing there should of course be some reason why you do them, it doesn't even have to change every time you do it but I think it would add more atmosphere to have a blerb with the mission that looks like a little briefing. not just go to coordinates x y and z and blow up five pirates, instead, a long range hauler has reported sightings of pirate activity near them. They are unable to adequately defend themselves and have released a distress beacon. You must arrive before the pirates close in for the kill and deal with them.

Re: Gaging interest in a space MMO like death match a new beginning

The thing is though, most of the more high profile people in the community who started playing dmnb stopped mainly because they thought it was too easy to do just about everything, and back in the first version it really was. You'd put in the coordinates to the asteroid field, then wait until you got there, hit "mine asteroid", waited for the hold to get full, put in the coordinates for the home station, waited to get back there, then transfered. Remember, you're making a full audio game, not a moo, and people who don't like MoOs will not like a game that basically emulates one.

Re: Gaging interest in a space MMO like death match a new beginning

Yeah I'm thinking I'll probably do 2d for navigation, it'll make things a lot easier both for me and for the players. For navigation I was thinking more of a menu based auto pilot system at least in the beginning, then depending on how that goes I'll see about a way to actually fly the ship yourself, though I'll have to think a lot about how that will actually work. Thanks for your ideas so far, keep them coming.

Re: Gaging interest in a space MMO like death match a new beginning

In terms of navigation, I'd love to see something in the style of new horizons where you can freely move and turn your ship. You'd be able to move in 3d, so your normal north/south and east/west directions but you could also move up and down (we'll just gloss over the fact that such terms are pretty trivial where space is concerned). But I don't think it'd be too bad if you made your system 2d instead of 3d to make it a bit more simplistic and reduce the number crunching when flying with auto pilot. New horizons does without the third dimension after all. I'd imagine that w and s would let you speed up and down while a and d turn you. The up and down arrows would add a vertical heading to your direction so you could decide how fast you want to ascend or descend as you move. While piloting like this, you could press enter or some other key like that to open a nav console that would let you set auto pilot destinations and stuff like that. How much you could do in that one menu would depend on how you want your ships to work, if its a small ship for one person you'd be able to do most things here like scanning, mining and the like, while on larger ships you'd need other players to do things like manage weapons or repair. A leveling system as suggested in post 2 would work, though I don't think it should be as restrictive as in cr. I like the sc approach, where most activities can be done pretty early but they all have progression within the activity itself, e.G. you don't have to do asteroid mining in sc at all, but no matter if you have 10 points or 1000, you always have to start by mining small ones, then you can begin to buy upgrades and mining licenses to get larger ones. Or in core exiles you can only explore medium size and large derelicts after you've spent some time exploring small ones and gaining the required exploration xp to reach the needed rank. That's how I prefer activities to work here, as well.About bomming planets, we shouldn't even talk about stuff like that before we know how the most basic of basics work, it's cool to focus on the explosions I know but getting the core mechanics right is by far the most important thing to do first.
