Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

I see. The lack of a numpad is something I'm personally not willing to compromise on. That's not a problem for me, there are plenty of other models I could look into, but my friend told me that he would only consider a mechanical if it was wireless or bluetooth, and, as I said, he doesn't want a model without a numpad either. Ah well. I'm sure the choices for such models will expand over time.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

Yeah, the k63 has no numpad unfortunately. You could get a usb numpad, but that sort of defeats the purpose. Unless you bought a k70 lux, it has usb ports and you plug a numpad in, that's a low-powered device so it could power the thing just fine.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

Well I have an asus strix pro tactic blue cherry switch. Its a heavy beast, but I have used it for the last 4 or so years now and apart from a few non working issues with keys from time to time a firmware refresh always fixes it.Keep meaning to clean the board since I havn't done that ever but I have never got round to it.It is quite noisy, for a board, especially in business calls but since I am at home by myself its nice. The thing is good and I like it a lot.Its nice, and I find my typing speed generally is quite fast. One thing to note though, apart from the inaccessible software for it that is which is not a problem is the media controls. Now I don't need to be concerned with muting audio, I can hit that button and it mutes. If I want to change the volume, I just role the roler and it does. One thing to note though is that it does bring out some sound, when plugged into a usb hub.Plugging it directly can help but if you like me want to hub it, you may want either an mbeat or similar charging station or m beat 7 port usb2-3 hybrid combo gaming hub.The modle of unit I have cost me 60 bucks, but the newer modle I got a friend last year was 40.It doesn't have the power port switches which means I can adjust what ports are active but its still ok.For a good feel or backup, the logitech kb120d while is as old as god still sells and is fine enough. If you really need something quiet, I would recommend as a backup the microsoft wired 600 board with multimedia controls.I havn't used the controls but its a nice board.I havn't noticed much issues with my board though a few people say its noisy and I guess it can be a bit loud at times.Of course being a self employed contracter, the fact my board sounds like a typewriter actually is nice. The engine is fast and well its good. However firmware in this model hasn't been updated since 2017 so its probably no longer about. It cost me 250 and I was conciddering corsair vengence. For a backup, genius have good boards to.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

My last keyboard had no numpad, and i hated it. If you want the k model of keyboards, i recommend the k70lux. I know someone who had it, and it's pritty nice, if you want a keyboard with nice red, i think? Switches and a tactile spacebar, as well as a USB hub and a braded cable, along with a kind of shitty built in rist rest. The only real downside to it for me is that the USB cable takes up two ports for the hub. I would have gotten one of those, but as i said, I like blue switches, and the k70 new was more then my refurbished DAS 4 with blue switches so...The k70 also has media buttons, along with a volume wheel.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

Some people are typing on desktop keyboards in an office job anyway, and those laptop keyboards are just not at all satisfying. I'd even want the macbook pro to be more bulky and have mx browns at least, then I'd consider it a pro-quality laptop. Although, the reason I like the pixelbook keyboard is because it actually does have firm springs unlike most membrane keyboards. It's not something I'd use for intense gaming, but it's not at all mushy either.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

@ironcross32: First mistake, you bought a raiser. Proprietary switches, they don't use the cherry brand, and are less durable. Korsair is the brand I trust. Also, quite frankly I love my mechanical keyboard and, and even though my pixelbook keyboard is the best laptop keyboard I have used thus far, it still doesn't beat the k63. And be mindful of those who use blues. For some people, the lever mechanism that makes the key click may benefit them greatly, as they get the feeling of the key actually being pressed down. For people who do a lot of writing, this is insanely comfortable compared to a shitty laptop keyboard like the macbook pro. Mx reds are not that loud once everyone gets used to them, and if you really, really want a quieter sound, get dampeners. Although I personally don't see why you would when that would make the keys feel mushy to type on. For gaming, this is a dream come true as I can't tell you how many laptop keyboards I've gone through due to gaming. Also, since when are we suddenly concerned about noise? Aren't we the same people that put up with braillewriters, mind you because for a time it was our only choice, just fine even though they were a major distraction?

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

@FlameAlchemist: Yup, there are Bluetooth mechanical keyboards. However, I wouldn't get one from a general-purpose brand, I'd get one from a trusted gaming hardware brand as those are, 1, almost guaranteed to use cherry switches except for Raiser, and 2, are a whole lot more durable. The korsair k63 is the wireless/bluetooth option I would highly recommend. It is the first bluetoth model froom a trusted gaming hardware brand. It uses cherry mx red speed switches, which makes gaming easier than ever since you can comfortably spam the keys over and over without bottoming out, and it makes typing ridiculously refreshing. The unit comes with a usb dongle if you want a more stable connection than Bluetooth. IT uses a 2.4ghz wireless connection between the receiver and the keyboard, which is the most fullproof wireless method mitigating the need for Bluetooth pairing, or which device can connect to it first, etc. But if you press function+f10, you are switched to Bluetooth mode. And it can function as a standard usb keyboard when charging.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

Slightly OT, but I don't get the orgasmic responses over mechanical keyboards. I had one, a razer blackwidow ultimate and I didn't really like it. It was feckin loud, the keycaps sort offormed a cradle that meant I normally was typing on the edge  of them, etc. Now, it had some cool features, like the USB port and headphones and line which were all three pass throughs, but still. IF the blues are even louder? Why in the name of all things holy do I want my typing to sound like rats scrabbling along a metal catwalk? The lighting was cool, even though it could only go green, if I had RGB that would be even cooler, but it is not a requirement. What is the appeal of this, just to be the loudest, most annoying person, and when you're on tt, the other people hear click click clack clack clack. I'm mystified.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

1. Don't get Raiser. They have a *slightly* lower durability rating since they manufacture their own switch brand. Korsair has plenty of keyboards with pure cherry mx switches.2. The one I have is the K63 wireless, with cherry mx reds. Those are not clicky (cherry mx blues), but if you want to use it to game, not having those is actually a good idea. The MX reds are fully linear, and you do not have to bottom out the keys and can spam them over and over comfortably. Typing on them is like typing on firm air, and because of that you even have less typos because the keys are more comfortable. And the k63 uses either a 2.4ghz usb dongle for wireless transmission, Bluetooth, or USB (charging the keyboard is as simple as plugging the thing into the computer as it doubles as a usb keyboard.) The Cherry Mx switch have a 5000 actuation durability rating, so we're talking several years of uninterrupted use.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

I would recommend the Das Keyboard 4 Professional:https://www.daskeyboard.com/daskeyboard-4-professional/Some things to note before buying. There are three versions of the Das Keyboard 4: professional, ultimate and professional for mac. The ultimate has no letters on the keys which is really cool, but it's not worth the extra $20. Also, the Das Keyboard 4 only comes in Cherry MX brown and Cherry MX blue switches, so if you're looking for a more exotic switch don't buy this board. If you do buy a board and find you don't like the switches, you can exchange the board. I don't know the exact window for exchange, but I would guess it's about 10 days.Best of luck in your hunt for your mechanical keyboard.

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

I'm thinking about getting my first mechanical keyboard since my old rubber dome is nearly at the end of its life. Having tested a few of the different types of switches, I'm going for the clicky switches as well. A lot of people in the forums and on Reddit where I've been looking say the major brands like Corsair, Razer, Logitech, etc are good, but you can apparently get better quality for less. Does anyone here beg to differ? The brands that are commonly thrown around include Ducky, Filco, and Leopold. After looking at a bunch of reviews, I'm thinking about going for the Ducky One 2. This is in no way set in stone, so I'm also interested in hearing suggestions. The problem I see with a lot of mechs is that they have RGB lighting, which is completely useless to me and adds considerably to the price. @Ty: What exactly happened to your first mechanical keyboard?

Re: Good mechanical keyboards?

Razor or Corsair are brands I'd recommend. I don't know what kind of switches you prefer, but that should get you started. There are a few budget off-brand ones which exist. In fact, I'm typing on one right now since I couldn't afford a higher end one at the time, and I'd broken the spacebar of my old one by accident. The problem with them is that the feel of the keys isn't going to be quite as nice. With mine, you can feel a slight wobble, it's kind of hard to explain, and you really have no choice but to bottom out the keys while typing because that's just the way it's set up. I'm hoping to get myself a new one in the near future, and just keep this as a backup since I've had it for a couple years now. The thing is, once you go mechanical, you really can't go back to traditional dome switch keyboards. Typing on them feels like shit.
