Re: Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

I think that creating a site that either hosts or gives locations to MUD Sound Packs is a great idea. As for getting around copyright issues, I believe that setting up a database and giving their locations and where they could be downloaded would be safer (but this would then mean that the locations would have to be checked often to make sure that the links are still valid which is what we were trying to avoid in the first place). Either way, I dont believe this project to exceed far past the visually impaired community either, so hosting the sound packs on the website itself might not be too dangerous for a while...

I think a MUD soundpack repository would be awesome. Certainly better than dropbox.

Re: Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

Could always do it through btsync so its not dependant on one server, but then youd run into the problem about pepole having to get every sound pack instead of just one. I also think Dentin is right. But Id be interested in this, and could add in a few packs if you did decide to do it provided that the authors gave permission.

Re: Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

The only legal way to actually make sound packs, would be to add your own music and/or sounds, or get music and/or sounds that was Creative Commons based, or that was Royalty-Free, non copyrighted.

Re: Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

True, though look at how long GMA commercially sold a Star Trek based game. I know I could ask authors to remove copyrighted music at the very least but how many would be willing to go along with this? The other alternative would be to make something like the games list on this forum where I list the soundpacks and provide links to where they can be found.

Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

Ive noticed for a long time a lot of the soundpacks out there are only available through dropbox or similar services so I thought Id ask, how much interest would there be in a site that acts as a central location for the hosting of soundpacks? Ill lay out a few ground rules and my intentions first.1, All soundpacks would be treated as the property of their author. They would be hosted/mirrored only with the authors express permission and would not be altered in any way other than updating the file to newer versions as the author may choose to make them available. My intention is to be game and platform agnostic, it would be my decision however as to whether a soundpack should be included or not based on any criteria I feel is appropriate and my decision would stand so long as no new updates or information comes to light. I wish to avoid arguments over the authorship of a soundpack so authors would need to expressly declare they are the valid ow
ner of the soundpack and have the consent of any contributors to the soundpack that it may be distributed freely.2, Soundpacks should wherever possible adhere to the rules for the game they are designed for, and while I understand many games allow strong language the soundpack itself should not include any offensive terminology. Additionally soundpacks must obviously be virus free and not include intentionally malicious script. I would be the one to make any decisions regarding these matters once they were brought to my attention.3, I would not accept support requests, bug reports, feature requests or general complaints regarding the soundpacks. Use of these soundpacks would be at the individuals own risk, while I will scan the soundpacks for viruses and would listen to concerns as I mentioned in 2 above I simply couldnt accept any kind of responsibility or provide warranty for the functionality or quality of the soundpacks. This is an important one to me.<
 /p>So what do people think?

Re: Interest in mud soundpack repository/mirror?

One of the big problems youre going to run into is popularity. If your repository turns out to be popular and widely used, its going to start getting copyright violation notices. Hardly any of the soundpacks out there actually have copyright for all the audio in them, and the packs with more popular common musical pieces are going to get hit hard.Never underestimate the evilness of the RIAA and MPAA.

Fair point there Dentin, that was something I was concerned about. That said I dont see it progressing beyond visually impaired players so I dont think itd get all that big.
