hmm, it usually takes me no more than 10 arrows when it goes poorly to take down a deer, and I'm definitely not a high level player... But, if your marksmanship AKA archery is not good, you'll miss, or just land grazing hits, which'll do less damage.Also, distance influences your missing ratelighting level influences it toodistance vision and dexterity are also two stats to take into account.personally ranged combat, I love it

I need to figure that out with my ranged character, I ended up picking a fight with a hind and coming out (mostly) alive. Grabbed the meat, now thinking what to do with it.So is it better to have a bow for hunting things like deer and such? I decided to try melee on a hind. It actually went pretty well, oddly enough.Also, can I get from liidhaga to Kungesvald easily? My ranged guy is down in Liidhaga, I'd like to get to the wilderness and practice on small fuzzy things

You can also make your own archery targets out of logs or reeds, but the thing that makes the archery range so appealing is that it has a line you stand on and three targets at different distances. You can also do this yourself if you want to put in the effort to make three targets, and then you type approach center, wait until you stop moving, then type approach whatever cardinal direction. You pick up a rock then use the arrange command (help arrange) to drop it and make it look nice. After that, you can approach center, drop a target, approach  but don't wait until you stop, just go a bit then stop, drop the second, then same, and drop the third.The archery range has aliases to help you like easy target and hard target, but you can use nearest and furthest to help you aim if you make your own range at your own camp. I never bothered with all that, i just made one target, and one rock to serve as a place to stand.

ok, so:1 - there's an archery range near, or more precisely behind, kungesvald. Once out of the east gate, it should be North, northwest, west, and South. You can also try your skills on some smaller animals like rabbits, or foxes, or mice, which sometimes spawn in Wilderness rooms.2 - the forest is out kungesvald, right, but not immediately out of it. You have to move a bit east and slightly to the North, and you'll find a quite large forest. If memory serves me well, and probably it doesn't but you can still try, once out of the east gates going northeast four or five times should land you in the forest. Careful not to get lost though

You can improve whichever skill interests you.You aren't stuck with one weapon.Whittling a wooden sword will help you improve woodworking, and then you'll have a practice sword if you ever want to sparr with somebody.But you can use the metal one for sure if you want to hunt that way in the meantime.It really depends on how you envision your character, and what you want them to grow into, but kind of like in real life, you'll develop a lot of different skills along the way to whatever the end goal is.

If you can find another person to sparr with, that's how it's done in Lament and AL.There is a command called "mercy" I think, and you turn it on so you don't kill one another.Then you fight with practice swords made of wood and things like that, until you're tired.It raises your skills fairly quickly.I wish they would put an NPC somewhere that would sparr with you, since there are times when you can't find a player character.For all I know, there may be one somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.Sorry that's not very helpful, but that's the best thing I know to do thus far.

Okay, somore questions.If I got my sword in one hand, I can't sling my bow over my back if I got a quivr there, yeah? Rereading the combat log, I got my skills going up a bit, moved sword up to novice from poor (yay go me!). So is it better to try to have my starting sword in two hands, or should I get a shield as well if I want to work on swords?I'd like to get it up to fair, honestly...but fighting tortoises at night was odddly fun, but the combat was just wait and wait and see what happens and hope I dodge (no, I didn't touch styles yet, it's all on the default balanced styles).So..I know what I want to do, butis there anywhere I can spar or something like it, like the archery and targets, can I wail on a training dummy or something similar?

The job will only pay you a little bit each time you log in.I think the idea behind jobs was to give new players a little bit of money so they could get things they need.I love the idea.But at least the way it looks to me, I think it still wants you to improve your skills.Granted, I haven't played to a high level, so I don't know that for sure.

Oh and I need more space or a heavier belt to hold my sword scabbard, knife sheath and my mney bag (which won't fit on my belt...sadly)So is it worth making a longbow or? Sadly, no matter how masterful you are at woodcarving (for example), your longbow will be exactly the same as someone who is just fair or mediocre, assuming they succeed at making the craft. I've suggested before that different skill levels should apply bonuses to the resulting item, but they were not open to such an improvement system. There is absolutely no benefit in getting a master craftsman to make you a longsword versus someone whose a dabbler, other than perhaps resources and time.Kai

You have to leave through the city gates to get to the wilderness. Look for forest terrain out there, and you'll find trees.After you chop the tree, get a saw and "saw log."You might be able to "trim tree" too.Then with the logs, you can make planks I think, which can be used to make furniture.For combat, fight small things - foxes, squirrels, rabbits, things that can't hurt you much. It will go up.If you want to concentrate on a specific combat tactic, look at "help style," for info.Also, after you have worked hard on a skill, sit down and "meditate" for several minutes. I think it increases learning speed.You can fill canteens in the wilderness too, if you see a river.I'm not familiar with Kungesvald yet, so I can't help with directions, but I'll add more when I can.

So.you all are saying custom build my guy. But, I already went through that, I doubt I can use the same name twice if I simply finished cgen and did nothing else, right?Also,I'm unsure how to even begin practicing the skills I even have. My guy's currently still in chargen IIRC.so what would be some good all around skills?I'm thinking attack speed, a little defense, some gathering, I'm liking the idea of sword and knife to skin and butcher things. Though I like the idea of a bow for taking things out at a range. I assume I can pick skills up bu using the tools right?So.My concept is young kid (made him young as possible) so I can learn as much as I can. Went human this time around since Menhit get low endurance and I'm not liking that much. HoweverI want somebody who can be good at combat if it's needed, but can do a little to help out wherever he is.So. What should I aim for skills/stats/species wise? I do like the descs of areas and rooms, and the walking to things in rooms I absolutely adore.

I always go for custom builds, for better or for worse.But I wouldn't delete that character if it's one you ant to play.You can have up to three characters on Lament, only one on the Mud at a time, but it does give you a chance to experiment and try out new skill sets and species.

I would have gone for a custom build myself. For one thing, you will always want one or two points in plant lore and gathering, because if you don't, holy shit it's gonna suck trying to get certain things for cooking and crafting. If you put those points in, you can build up from there.

@9 Good for you, no one cares. It's not like they forked it, made one change and called it theirs like people do with games on here. The changes are extensive. If you want to have that kind of bias, so be it, but you're missing out.@10. You can get good at everything in this game over time. I know that's a little unrealistic, but you do have to put quite a lot of time into it to be a pretty good character. For now, what do you want to do? I mean, what vocation should your character have? For combat, learn the ins and outs of the style system, I can say from experience that it is very important. Mismanage that and you will die to stupid things; however, if you manage it well, expect to kill things you didn't think possible with your current experience and strength.

Yes, it was forked from AL; however, they've done their own unique things with the code base. It's very much well done. I am not on there anymore though, since I couldn't deal with slow progress in developing new things.

Concerning jobs, do you know how often you have to log in to keep your job and be paid?If I read it correctly, it sounds like you have to log in every twelve hours for at least thirty minutes.That doesn't sound right to me.It said something about payouts topping out at three payments if you hadn't logged in, and I was under the impression they paid you every game day.A bit confused on that point.

There's a lot to this MUD, it's like the successor to AL, but the thing is. When you do everything, development is super super slow. Now, now, getting to that point may take years, but still.The building is great, everything is very detailed, and that makes it really unique. There are lots of places to go and things to do and see, lots of craftables too.

Lament is a low fantasy Mud with light postapocalyptic themes. It is classless and levelless, meaning that you can practice any skill you like and become whatever you want to be in this world.There are four races - human, menhit, goblin, and dhaaja.Character creation is deep, but a fairly quick process, and then you are in the world.There is a ton of crafting here, and characters can get jobs, so that they earn money while offline.You create an account, so that you can play multiple characters, albeit not at the same time.I like the concept of this Mud, although the mapping confuses me as usual.I haven't got far into it, but I realized this Mud didn't have a page in "new releases" so I am adding it for those who may not know about the Mud.lament.ghostglass.netport: 8600

The guides other people linked in earlier posts are pretty comprehensive, in terms of craftablesI struggle myself to find out basic things like where to find straw (supposedly available in one city but not the other!?), or where to sell what. For Liidhaga, I think there is a tailor who will buy cloth, off of Nails Street -- roughly SE, SE, NE,NE, NW from the Central Square of the city (opposite of the Jewelry store). And general note that shops with no NPCs do not buy items; shops with NPCs are picky about what they buy -- unfortunately unless someone has a list or shares info with us, the only way I find what I can sell is by trying to sell items in all the different stores and taking notes.There is a bakery and a kebab shop, off SW and off SE of the streets coming from the Liidhaga Square, respectively; 
 although for a menhit/human, I would recommend hunting for small game or gathering/foraging mushroom/etc. for more reliable and cheaper food. As menhit, I think you can eat raw meat safely. Buying food seems to be a luxury we can't really afford starting out, unfortunately, in my opinion.Much of the learning seems to be that way, about trial and error, learning from mistakes, or being lucky enough to get guidance from an experienced/knowledgeable player. Also, "reverse engineering" -- find the end product and try "make " to identify the ingredients and subcomponents, even if you don't have them available.Each city sort of specializes in certain crafts, and the basic ingredients and tools for those crafts are available there respectively.I think the "survey" command just shows you the wilderness tiles (based on your vision skills) if you are in the wilderness area.You might be needing the "scaveng
 e" command to identify the gettable free items in each wilderness room. Or "forage" to randomly find appropriate food/herbs/materials in the terrain (also based on season).Perhaps not coincidentally, it seems the game mechanics and design make it valuable to work with other people, to specialize labor, and to trade/share resources, in a player-based economy. In practice, however, the player knowledge disparity and the resulting economics are as broken and lamentable as the world is described in its lore.

My only issue thus far is information seems a bit difficult to come by generally, eg I have the weaving skill but it took someone else to tell me where to find flax to weave. Likewise if I do weave some cloth I don't know where I can sell it or where I can actually buy food, and since I'm a menhit and need either meat or bread that is a slightly difficult prospect at the moment. I am rather missing survey command here right now to tell me what is in each area.

Ah, I can tell you anything, I'm just a little burnt out from the slow pace of dvelopment, I just want stuff to manage like houses, farms, its all coming, coming, coming coming, but it never comes. I know they have a couple part time coders, but progress is slow. What is there though is solid, well built, thought out, highly detailed though.

Hello! New member here, drawn to the posts about Lament the MUD. Since the MUd's site no longer hosts its own forums, it seems there are some players here, so I wanted to reach out to them and to new potential players!Just started playing on Lament about a month ago, and it's been a pretty immersive experience so far; however, there is a serious lack of players, and apparently slow development. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed games like ( Unreal World ), Lament brings the same hard-core, gritty crafting survival in a multiplayer context. In that regard, if you are into in-depth crafting and a more sandbox, open-ended world with no structured quests per se, Lament has a lot to offer in its game systems.@Xoren, thanks for your review I saw on Mudconnect that made me want to try this MUD. After about a month of playing now, I pretty much agree 100% with all your points, except for the ones about staff interaction
 s. So, I am curious, what kind of disagreements or unsavory interactions have you had with the staff or other players? I have only met 1 staff so far, and she has been extremely helpful and friendly, considering the number and scope of dumb questions I asked to learn how to play.Personally, I have found the staff and other players pretty helpful, and not as strict as other similar MUDs when it comes to protecting IC info and syntax help, etc.However, I am reaching the saturation point, like when I was playing Unreal World, where NPCs just do not satisfy my social needs lol. I wish there were more people around to play, explore, craft, and trade with, or even have fun/interesting conflicts with (read: non-griefing).Pretty much everything Ironcross said in his various posts about Lament are very much on point and very helpful for when I was first starting out.I do not believe I have reached "end-game" content yet, as I heard there are danger
 ous "wastelands" areas that I've never seen, and many other "points of interest" on the huge world map I've never been to, and explored, so I'm still holding out to experience those in full... I just lament the loneliness of it all...

I've never had any negative staff interactions, in fact, I can say the staff have been really friendly. The development is very slow, yes. I also agree the ranged combat flat out sucks. I love that there is so much to explore, I love the crafting system, I love the styles, but yes, its pretty much autocombat with no flare until one of you dies. I have had characters start in both of their major cities. Liidhaga does seem to be more of a challenge to get started in, but can also be richly rewarding. I do feel like a majority of the playerbase is in Kungesvald, their other starting city.If you put in enough time, you will grind up your skills and you will craft, and then in just sort of stops. The feature incompleteness that they're experiencing will have you reach an end to what is interesting in a while. They desperately need a coder or coders who can put time into developing these features.Overall, I enjoy Lament. However, after staying away for a year, th
 e amount that had changed or been added was disappointing to me. However, just look around you, see what all you can see, there is a lot of detail there and that took a lot of dedication and hard work. I would recommend to try it and not dismiss it out of hand for that reason alone. It might work for you, it might not. These major changes that are purportedly in the works have been in the works for a while now, and that's sad to see. I wish the development could be increased in pace by several notches.As for the aids for accessibility, let's say we are disadvantaged because as stated in the previous post, the sighted player's ascii map outranges our survey far and wide. However, I know that they are receptive to feasible suggestions to improve accessibility. Shops had received an overhaul that made them vastly more usable by us.

After a year of playing this mud, and in the light of some unsavory staff member interactions, here is my review of Lament:Lament is a fun mud, with a rich, addictive crafting system, great roleplaybackground, history, and atmosphere. I just wanted to bump this in an encouragement to get more folks on the MUD. Things are not all that different from last time, except the effort of consolidating things by making them into piles, balls etc. There is a constant layer base there, although it is a small one. We do see 10 from time to time, most of them are in on the morning EST.So if you like in depth crafting and combat, head on over to lament.ghostglass.net port 8600 and create an account and character. No soundpack and tbh, I don't find one to be necessary. Lament is the type of MUD you'd play while you do other things anyway, since the crafts do tent to take an appreciable amount of time, even RL hours for some.

Ahoy thereEver since I heard of this one in another topic, I have wanted to try it.I even did once, but left after character creation as I felt a bit lost as to what to do after I was dumped in the intersection.This guide and topic told me a bit of how this mud works and what activities you could undertake and what you could expect. and I gave it a go again yesterday.A soundpack would certainly make this game more appealing, and I might make/start one myself,but then again VIPMuds manual isn't all that great and my scripts are crude more often than not so don't hope for much besides the very basics.I guess one could have called it one of those simulation games I.E build houses and such,but this would be more of the mid to early centuries instead of now.The combat is unique and has a lot of potential imo but could use a few improvements just like the game itself.Think of this as the craftland or the huntingland or what you wil

There's fishing, hunting, blacksmithing, leather working, tayloring, mercinary work, a really awesome combat system. Really cool travel system, and yeah. It's not like alter where you go around killing stuff for experience, you just do stuff and you gain skilll, the more skill you have, the more stuff you can do, and the better you do it.

Moderation! I actually should've thought of this yesterday, but  sinse this  is our first full topic about  lament and it's therefore a newly discovered accessible game, I will move this to new releases. As to the game, I know this sort of game doesn't have quests or monsters, but I'd be interested to know what else there is to do and what the creafting is for. Clok after all has it's guilds and taint to fight, avalon has it's complex city system etc. If the game is just a medeival world to roleplay in and get better at crafting, that sounds fine as far as it goes and the crafting sounds good, but I suspect for me It'd feel a little empty after a while.

Thanks for the good starter's guide ironcross, I actually nearly tried this one but I do have a couple of questions. What sort of activities does the game have? What sort of things can you craft? and other than crafting, are there quests and tasks to do, wilderness survival like clok, monsters to slay like  Aardwolf etc? Are there character classes, or is it just based on how you develop your character's skills. The game sounds cool, though I'm tryingsix dragons at present, however I'd be interested to know more.

Wait, this game is permadeath?I don't mechanically have a problem with that, but...sounds like it could be easily abused.I guess my question is what's the point of all these skills. You could play all day and make random table legs and random clothes and stuff,, but what's really the point? Can you somehow get yourself a house? What's rp like? Well, I thought the guide was about as well organized as a goldfish's memory, but anyway... Monsters and quests, not really, its not that kind of MUD, however there are plenty of animals to kill. Most things can be skinned and butchered, pelts can be scraped leaving hides, if you tan a hide you have leather. You can make your own clothes with your leather working and sewing skills. Weaving and spinning go hand in hand, allowing you to create thread, and bolts of fabric from that. Trees can be cut down, sawed into planks, and the planks can go into your own projects, like table legs, etc. Carpentry is not a skill I've become advanced in, but I'm working on it. Honestly, I need to have a character that lasts a week, haha. Herbs can be gathered and used in your cooking. Honestly, there's so much to craft, anything from whittling a torch to making a wheel barrow, or a tent. With foods you have, you can make bits of some of it, then you can either buy or make a fish
 ing rod and try to catch some fish. You can even make your own forge or pit forge, kilns, smelting furnaces, etc. You cannot mine, but you can attempt to gather ores in mountainous regions. If you are successful, you can smelt that ore. There is also casts you can buy to make ingots or bars, which are generally how you work with metal. You can also make charcoal, which, if you make your own forge, is an invaluable skill to have, since you will be burning a lot. I haven't made my own forge yet, I still am working towards a tent, which is expensive, so either I work like the devil, or I make one. You can make boats to help you cross rivers, or trans-oceanic journeys. About the starting places. Liidhaga is in Moorva, but not on the mainland. I really like the tropical feeling down there. Some things to note though. Liidhaga has no tanner's shop, nor has it got a butcher as far as I know. This means if you want to get into leather working, you're going to need to do a lot
  of repairing to your own gear first. You aren't going to be able to tan successfully without some skill in it. There are a lot of swamp regions, thus, a lot of opportunity to hunt down clay. If you want to cross the ocean and get to the mainland, you can do so by ferry. Kungesvald is bracketed by a river which runs north and northeast and south and southeast. To cross it, you may have to find a spot where you can ford the river on the diagonal. If your swimming skill is low, don't even think about it. The river is only 2 tiles wide in places, but don't let that fool you, you will probably drown. The more weight you have on you, the more you will become fatigued. So, if you want to make the attempt, get some sleep, and check your fatigue with the info or fatigue commands, and make sure it says fully rested. If you get in the water, and you are struggling to stay afloat, its honestly not worth it, turn back. There is still plenty of terrain on the city side of the rive
 r, so it's not dire to cross it at the beginning.

So, Lament is far from a new mud, in fact it's been out for 5 or so years now. The player base is not huge though, and I think it deserves more players, in this post, I'm going to enumerate some interesting bits of things I've observed that set it apart from other MUDs. First off, let me discuss the setting. It's a low fantasy environment set in olden times, like before Renaissance and and Medieval times. There is no use of magic yet, but I get the feeling that is something that might, and I do mean might turn up some day, if not, I will be fine with that, since it's not why I play anyway.So, onto my observations then. Like Clok, it has a very open environment in which many facets of one room, tile or square is described. Unlike Clok, they don't give you any hints, like the graphics on the map, or the number sign on screen reader mode. By the way, it's screenreader on to enable that. And, the staff seem to care about accessibility, yeah, I
  know, horaa and all that. I don't feel they are needed though, as everything is described individually and logically.. While individual rooms can be quite large, you don't really have one area and many buildings like you do in Clok. In the towns I've been in so far, the buildings lead off the streets. To shop, you would pay attention to the description, and look at the elements that have goods, for example, you could say, "look shelf", and if there were merchantable items there, you would see them, and their prices. Sometimes you are required to read shelf, or read table to get this information. The currency in the world is based off of a penny. You have penny, silver star, silver moon, and golden sun. Obviously, the penny is worth 1, the star is worth 10 pents, the moon is 100, and the sun is 1,000. Every player starts out with 115 pents if I remember rightly, this is contained in a money bag in your backpack.Let's go over some notes on charact
 er generation. When you create an account, you will have a short tutorial to do, pay attention here, as the game attempts to illustrate the way in which many things can be individually gazed upon in a room. Character generation is pretty simple, each room you do a series of things. You have the opportunity to read the relevant help files before you go in, and the game gives you hints on what you should look at. The species in Lament are Goblin, Dhaja, Human and Menhit. Each with their strengths and weaknesses. Once you get the physical attributes down, you then go on and set your stats. This is where you have the opportunity to maybe correct a slight disadvantage of your species and bring up the relevant stats. Examine this carefully, you'll see star characters, this indicates the default value of each stat for your species, the +0 means only that you haven't changed it from that base value. Follow the prompts and set up your stats. The next room has you doing the same for
  your skills. Here, instead of laying out each skill in a long list, you see only the categories, all you do if you want to see the skills in a particular category is type out the name, so you could type, "weapons". I'd think of what you are aiming to do here, if you want to go full combat, put points into one or two weapons, and then some styles. A brief note about the combat styles. This is kind of like your immediate tactics, they can be adjusted at any time, and even saved and switched between. Think of a series of sliders, on each end are opposites, for instance, attack and defense. You can set the sliders where you want to attain the balance you want in your combat. Anyway, once you have your skills set out, You'll be taken to a place where you can get clothing for free, once and only once per character, so consider carefully. At this time, if you just walk past without getting anything, you'll be automatically dressed, however, this could be unwise, s

So, Lament is far from a new mud, in fact it's been out for 5 or so years now. The player base is not huge though, and I think it deserves more players, in this post, I'm going to enumerate some interesting bits of things I've observed that set it apart from other MUDs. First off, let me discuss the setting. It's a low fantasy environment set in olden times, like before Renaissance and and Medieval times. There is no use of magic yet, but I get the feeling that is something that might, and I do mean might turn up some day, if not, I will be fine with that, since it's not why I play anyway.So, onto my observations then. Like Clok, it has a very open environment in which many facets of one room, tile or square is described. Unlike Clok, they don't give you any hints, like the graphics on the map, or the number sign on screen reader mode. By the way, it's screenreader on to enable that. And, the staff seem to care about accessibility, yeah, I
  know, horaa and all that. I don't feel they are needed though, as everything is described individually and logically.. While individual rooms can be quite large, you don't really have one area and many buildings like you do in Clok. In the towns I've been in so far, the buildings lead off the streets. To shop, you would pay attention to the description, and look at the elements that have goods, for example, you could say, "look shelf", and if there were merchantable items there, you would see them, and their prices. Sometimes you are required to read shelf, or read table to get this information. The currency in the world is based off of a penny. You have penny, silver star, silver moon, and golden sun. Obviously, the penny is worth 1, the star is worth 10 pents, the moon is 100, and the sun is 1,000. Every player starts out with 115 pents if I remember rightly, this is contained in a money bag in your backpack.Let's go over some notes on charact

When you create an account, you will have a short tutorial to do, pay attention here, as the game attempts to illustrate the way in which many things can be individually gazed upon in a room. Character generation is pretty simple, each room you do a series of things. You have the opportunity to read the relevant help files before you go in, and the game gives you hints on what you should look at. The species in Lament are Goblin, Dhaja, Human and Menhit. Each with their strengths and weaknesses. Once you get the physical attributes down, you then go on and set your stats. This is where you have the opportunity to maybe correct a slight disadvantage of your species and bring up the relevant stats. Examine this carefully, you'll see star characters, this indicates the default value of each stat for your species, the +0 means only that you haven't changed it from that base value. Follow the prompts and set up your stats. The next room has you doing the same for
  your skills. Here, instead of laying out each skill in a long list, you see only the categories, all you do if you want to see the skills in a particular category is type out the name, so you could type, "weapons". I'd think of what you are aiming to do here, if you want to go full combat, put points into one or two weapons, and then some styles. A brief note about the combat styles. This is kind of like your immediate tactics, they can be adjusted at any time, and even saved and switched between. Think of a series of sliders, on each end are opposites, for instance, attack and defense. You can set the sliders where you want to attain the balance you want in your combat. Anyway, once you have your skills set out, You'll be taken to a place where you can get clothing for free, once and only once per character, so consider carefully. At this time, if you just walk past without getting anything, you'll be automatically dressed, however, this could be unwise, s
