Re: Linux: Wine issues Hi.Thanks for your reply.Regarding Ubuntu: I'm not talking about the normal Ubuntu which have a graphical interface, but the server version of Ubuntu. But maybe I can use a normal Ubuntu as a test machine and set it up like my server? An interesting thought which I need to look at.Regarding Wine: So, do you have any idea on what to do to get the server up and running? Would you mind giving it a try to see if it works for you? Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues Hi, installing a ubuntu vm is not that hard, it's even accessible mor than windows it self. ubuntu has graphical as well as sound drivers, morover net work onece. graphical linux systems have a desktop and everything, not really for pro people, everyone can use them. You can get an image after install it with speatch enabled.Talking of your problem, I'ven't use wine that much, but I am gotta tri to run the server. the error which you have to take care of is the last one, the two first onece are not really that much important, cause wine displays those two msg all the time: err:winediag:nulldrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no ddriver could be loaded.err:winediag:nulldrv_CreateWindow Make sure that your X server is running and ththat $DISPLAY is set correctly.greetings. Re: Linux: Wine issues I'm sorry if I explained myself wrong which might have caused some misunderstanding.I have tried to run the checkup.exe as well, which won't run either.Speaking about running a test server on a virtual machine:If possible, I wanna run an Ubuntu server as a virtual machine for testing. Do you know how to set it up, because I don't think the Ubuntu server comes with a sound card driver and a screenreader, and SSH might not be configured as default. Is this the reason for you're suggesting Debian? Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues Ah, I presumed you wanted to learn the innards of linux because you are offering to host game servers. Managing them properly might also require some more experience in debugging issues etc. But what you could try is register the dlls/ocx files listed in the old swamp register.bat files with wine regsvr. I'd need to download an ubuntu iso to test it myself, and I am on a 2 mbit connection, so I can't test for you. Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues I'm sorry for the way I'm saying this, but you're not being much helpful at all, but you're starting to get quite annoying like most other Linux geeks..My issue is not to learn how Linux works. That's what I'm learning by experimenting on my server. Yes I have broken the server a lot of times already. Regarding my issue which is described detailed in the first post, I have of course searched on Google. I have looked in forums and all that crap. I have even tried to register on the Wine forum to ask for any help, but since I'm not a Linux geek, I failed. This is the reason for I'm asking for help on how to get the thing to run using Wine. Last year, I asked in an other topic for peoples recommendations regarding to what server I should use. I got told that Wine can run Windows servers. So, the answer I'm getting is: Thi s is a VB6 program. Yes, I know that. Then I'm told to use Google. Yes I have done that, without any useful results. So, if you really know what you are talking about, you should install an Ubuntu server, get the damn thing to work which I've linked to in the first post and tell me how to do it.Throwing random suggestions at me and just tell me to search on Google just tells me that you don't know what you're talking about, or you can't tell me what I have to do to get the thing working in Wine. Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues I'm sorry to say this, but if you want to be taken seriously as a server admin/server hoster, these posts really don't help. Set up your own test environment. If you need help with setting it up no problum, but asking for spoonfeading just isn't going to get you far. You'll never learn how a linux system really works without destroying a system or 2, or 3, or 4..., you get the idea. Get an official debian netinst image from the website, create a virtual machine or use an old computer you have, boot it, after the beep hit s for speech, then enter. finnish the install, then install wine and run the commands above, they do work. But it still won't run properly, the program starts, but it gives a lot of errors. Now I'm going to be annoying or helpful, what your prefer to call it. tip1: the program is written in vb6. Tip2: use google. Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues xvfb is a package that basically creates a fake x-server which acts just like one, but actually doesn't do anything. I can see if I've got a debian vm somewhere. You should probably either create snapshots of your servers so you can restore them when needed, and have your own linux virtual machines. Debian at least is not that hard to set up, provided your sound hardware works. Re: Linux: Wine issues
Re: Linux: Wine issues Thanks for your suggestion. I'm not sure on what this does and I don't wanna brake things which are already working for me in Wine. So, will you give it a try to see if it works for you? I could try a ton of things, brake things because I don't know what I'm doing and screw it up more than I already have done. So therefore I hope someone will give it a try.Just download one of the two servers which I've linked to in the first post. Extract it, run it using Wine and connect to your servers IP using http and connect to port 82. You can check that very quickly. This is nothing complex. So therefore I hope some of you will spent a few minutes to see if it works for you before suggesting something which can brake my already working servers in Wine. Re: Linux: Wine issues Hi.Thanks for your reply. I have two questions:1: Why won't the server run if the error message only means it can't create a window? It shows the path under the error, meaning it's not running. It doesn't create the data file which it should as soon as the server runs, and I can't connect to the server as well.2: Will you please give it a try and tell me if you can get it to work? You can easily see if it works for you because the server will create a data.txt file as soon as it starts. Re: Linux: Wine issues Hi.So I tried to registre at the Wine forum, but failed. Thankfully, they are not using an inaccessible captcha, but you need to answer some geeky questions like what is not a Linux system, and I have no freaking clue. There are some math puzzles as well, which you don't have to answer by typing numbers but write out the numbers in english words which I failed as well. So in other words: Newbies are not welcome on this forum, and properly not people who fail at writing the number 505 in english words as well. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact the people behind Wine other than through the forum, so I need to figure out how to solve this issue on my own. Yeah, kind of screwed, but I don't give up yet... I'm just currently quite angry and disappointed at the Wine forum. I hate that people generally expect you to be a geek when using Linux.
