Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

Just created a character on Tempest Season. Game play looks like it'll be very interesting.

I can only think of frandum atm. Story and progression through it is a huge part of the gameplay.

Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

Given the choice, I'd probably play single player games too, but as muds still dominate the rpg experience, I like to see muds with an interesting world and quests that at least give some ideas of story and setting, indeed I tend to find muds that skimp on the interactable quests and  especially skimp on the text descriptions and atmosphere lose my interest even if the systems are good. Interestingly enough, several muds I've found have had amazing newbie experiences which are! exactly what I'm looking for, then as soon as I get spat out into the main game world and no longer have story and such to follow, I either lose interest or get entirely lost, especially when quests to progress get impossibly illogical, indeed some muds like 4dimensions, newmoon and diskworld I found particularly bad for this. The most extreme case is Avalon the legend livs where I absolutely love the writing, and the newbie academy is just so good, then once I finish I'm literally stuck with nothing to do. Criosphere and Frandom are much better for this since there are plenty of quests and stories kicking around, though Criosphere I found a bit more impenitrable sometimes in what you had to do to get what done, Eg literally having to give an object called "mission" to someone to complete a mission, and between those systems and some rather opaque clues on what to do to complete certain necessary tasks, I sort of got stuck. Frandom is far better, siince the quests are actually possible, and the admins care a lot about the game and are absolutely bent on constructing a world people can interact with and quests that are possible to complete. Asteria looked like it was great for quests, and quests that told  at least coonnected stories between it's npccs, if not a full narative, but combat was bloody difficult last time I checked. Tempest season likewise had a great progressive system which took you through a good few areas, plus some of probably the best combat I've seen in a mud for a long time, I really ought to chheck  back in on that one myself.

Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

@Ironcross32 point. Believe me if there were more accessible videogames i would gladly play them if they were available on PC. Right now I'm looking through Steam to see if there's anything playable. But MUDS are easier to play on pcs, and I haven't yet managed to get to a place where OCR doesn't spit out gibberish.

Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

I don't like MUDs that do the whole linear thing. If I'm going to experience a story that way, give me a video game. MUDs are supposed to be text based hack 'n slash or imaginative roleplay.

Starmourn to an extent has something like that, doesn't it? At least with its newbie quests.

Criosphere seems good from what I've played so far.Me being me, I leapt right to the academy mission. I know what I need to do. But not /how/ to do that. I've kind of, sort of failed twice in spectacularly idiotic ways

Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

Frandom and to a lesser extent criosphere are indeed the best I've found, however some muds have pretty good individual quest lines with a tied together story, like a lot of the Island of slo in Alteraeon following the kobold attack in the newbie area. Luminary mud always prided itself on it's coherent quest line which told a full campaign story, though that's one I have yet to investigate myself Details and website are here. Unfortunately as far as interactive fiction etc go, there are very few interactive text rpgs, most If tends to be puzzles and manipulating objects rather than rpg levelling and combat.

Re: MUDS with a good coherent story

I guess muds aren't really the right medium for good storytelling. Offline interactive fiction has a much easier job to do this.

There isn't really. There's singleplayer muds like Frandum and Cryisphere, but Frandum isn't aiminnng to tell a story per say.

MUDS with a good coherent story

Hi:So I've been playing Alter Eon for most of the day, and it got me thinking. Are there any muds where you progress by playing through the story as you would in other RPGs? So far, I've seen MUDS with killing, exploring, crafting, etc. So I'm curious.
