Re: Perseverance Landing On Mars Video: February 22nd

There's been a few more clips of Perseverance in the days after landing that were uploaded yesterday, all previous and current samples seem to be dumped [here], which includes recordings of wind and laser sampling, in addition to the interplanetary transit audio. You can also download the clips, and chance are there will be more as they finish processing them.

@28You can find the audio clips [here] on soundcloud, where they usually upload such things. Also, if you watched the livestream replay I posted earlier in the thread you could hear the sounds there as well. They also specifically mentioned how they had blind people in mind, it wasn't the only reason they had for the microphones, but it was a factor.

Re: Perseverance Landing On Mars Video: February 22nd

Mars rover's giant parachute carried a secret message.Pasting it below for the lazy once those who  want to read...The huge parachute used by NASA’s Perseverance rover to land on Mars contained a secret message, thanks to a puzzle lover on the spacecraft team.Systems engineer Ian Clark used a binary code to spell out “Dare Mighty Things” in the orange and white strips of the 70-foot (21-metre) parachute. He also included the GPS coordinates for the mission’s headquarters at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.Clark, a crossword hobbyist, came up with the idea two years ago. Engineers wanted an unusual pattern in the nylon fabric to know how the parachute was oriented during descent. Turning it into a secret message was “super fun”, he said Tuesday.Only about six people knew about the encoded message before Thursday’s landing, according to Clark. They waited until the parachute images came back before putting out a teaser during a televised news conference on Monday. It took just a few hours for space fans to figure it out, Clark said. Next time, he noted, ?I’ll have to be a little bit more creative.?“Dare Mighty Things” — a line from President Theodore Roosevelt — is a mantra at JPL and adorns many of the centre’s walls. The trick was “trying to come up with a way of encoding it but not making it too obvious,” Clark said.As for the GPS coordinates, the spot is 10 feet (3 metres) from the entrance to JPL’s visitor centre.Another added touch not widely known until touchdown: Perseverance bears a plaque depicting all five of NASA’s Mars rovers in increasing size over the years ? similar to the family car decals seen on Earth.Deputy project manager Matt Wallace promises more so-called hidden Easter eggs. They should be visible once Perseverance’s 7-foot (2-metre) arm is deployed in a few days and starts photographing under the vehicle, and again when the rover is driving in a couple weeks.Definitely, definitely should keep a good lookout. he urged.

@28 i can't actually find any audio clips from the landing. and i'm pretty sure they didn't have blind people in mind when they put those options in.

Re: Perseverance Landing On Mars Video: February 22nd

I do commend them, especially Dave Gruel, for having thought about the blindness population as a reason for installing the microphones. Few entities take us into consideration, so I feel like we're moving in a right direction. I surely hope more sounds are recorded, so that we can have full soundscapes eventually.[Here's an article] that talks more about it.

Re: Perseverance Landing On Mars Video: February 22nd

if we can harvest things we need from another planet, it raises all kinds of problems. we have broken our planet and so to build on another world will take centuries as we gradually move people to find the things we need to just carry on moving more people. just to shift 1 people to start building a biosphere on mars would take a smace ship at least 3 times the size of the queen mary 2 ocean liner to carry people, food and fuel plus things they would need to start building. that is probably a huge under estimate. unless scientists come up with new forms of power, i don't think we can do it.

Re: Perseverance Landing On Mars Video: February 22nd

The conference finished earlier today. Sadly, it turns out the EDL microphone failed to record the descent, however they have managed to record the sounds of the rovers surroundings on Mars. The relevant part of the stream starts around the 38 minute mark.
