You can also press T to read the screen. There are some CC option screens that aren't read as you move around and change things, but you can always press T to check what's there. A bit annoying, but it works.

Pokémon Prism is going to break pretty much any accessibility hack because the game does stuff you generally can't do in any GBC-era game. Some of the puzzling just won't be possible to represent, so I gently recommend trying something else.

That's not surprising, the further hacks deviate from the original game, the less likely the scripts will work correctly due to objects and values not being where they should be.  The only one I play apart from perfect blue and crystal is twitch plays pokemon.  That one seems to be perfectly doable.  even more so with the updated default names file.  If it wasn't for that, I would only have one pokemon access folder on this machine.  as it is, I still have both.

I have to admit it's super interesting to find out what moves pokemon get as you level up now, as there seems to be a lot more coverage available.Well I was an idiot, coppied the folder over so I had a backup for the twich plays pokemon, as perfect crystal will be my main starting game, but forgot to delete the vba config settings, so it was looking for everything in the wrong place.

I have to admit it's super interesting to find out what moves pokemon get as you level up now, as there seems to be a lot more coverage available.Interestingly though I'm having issues with the scripts.  I replaced the mapnames file, but the first map still has the warp one, warp two and so on, as well as not telling me how to get to north or south routs.  I found them, but was wondering if there is something extra I need to do?  I'm using the original scripts.  Also the footsteps value isn't working for me, however I will try the other one provided and see if that works.  Figured I'd ask to see if all this is normal.also just found my game keeps crashing when my pokemon comes out and doesn't make sound.  a reinstall is needed apparently.

BTW, just discovered that Anniversary Crystal commits a pretty big no-no in my book. It fucks with base stats...and quite a bit, too. Offenders thus far are Beedrill, Delibird, Pinsir, Parasect (seriously, Parasect has stats akin to the legendary birds, I'm not even kidding), Yanma, Venomoth, Sudowoodo, Ninetales and Ledian. I mean, okay, some of these pokemon sucked (Delibird, I'm looking at you), and I get why they did it, to actually make a lot more things viable. But this is edging into do-whatever-the-hell-you-want territory. I can live with Flame Wheel on Rattata or Seismic Toss on Jynx or Iron Tail on a level 12 Onix because reasons. But I've decided that as tempting as it is, I'm not going to use any of the mons whose stats have very obviously been jacked. If Gamefreak had wanted these pokemon to be this good, they, ahem, would've made them this good. I can live with moveset tweaks to some extent, but base stat tweaks just starts to toss everything out the windo IMO. Again, still playing the game (going through Ice Path currently, and T-tar is destroying everything - but probably when I get done with this, I'll chuck it and won't look back.

@845 mostly Jade and I posting about crystal and its hacks, namely anniversary. as for additions, I generated an updated default_names.lua file that fixes most of the missing map names in anniversary. so not a major addition to the base game, but does make a major difference when playing anniversary edition imo

Big spoilers for pokemon crystal clear... There is something between route 7 and route 8 in which you can find a gym leader that can do something intresting. Also, ice path is changed for this rom hack, but you can get waterfall with a dratini.

Well at least rock polish on Tyranitar is a legit move but I hear you, it's a bit too powerful in that case.As for water pokemon, I only used them as surf and waterfall slaves at the same time if I had no other choices. Would usually do so until the pokemon league and then have that Kadabra teleport me back so that I could ditch one of the two, then I would only keep Surf on Vaporeon and Waterfall on Feraligatr for example.

lol The radio tower is full of trainers who use the Berserk Gene, and it's backfiring on them horribly most of the time. But hey, at least they actually used the item.My Tyranitar and Magneton are basically sweeping everything. I don't know whose bright idea it was to give a Tyranitar Rock Polish, BTW, but in single battles it's murderous. Ditto Magneton getting Mirror Coat. Skarmory is a cut-fly slave, Feraligatr is a Surf/Waterfall/Strength slave (and I'll put Whirlpool on it when I get it because why the hell not), which leaves two slots open. My poor Venusaur has just gotten outclassed, so I'm probably gonna look for a good fire type and a good psychic type. Maybe Mr. Mime/Alakazam and Arcanine/Ninetales? Not sure. This game is definitely a wild ride though.

also I am just in SS Anne right now and talked to the captain and we departed. not sure where to go next. I am pretty sure I beat all the passengers already. where do I go to move the plot forward. the captain told me I have a room in the lower decks, but not sure which room he means since there probably about 20 small rooms around the ship lol

@828 thanks for the feedback on the updates map names. as I wrote previously, I only just generated them from anniversary assembly code and havent played through the whole game yet to confirm how correct it is, especially for later parts of the game.  for the map names I only appended the extra maps introduced in anniversary, but left the rest the same as in vanilla crystal. in the game I am up to vermillion city, so haven't checked past there. I also generated this map names file that might be more accurate, but haven't been able to confirm it yet, since haven't gotten to jotto yet. you can get it here and try it out to see if it fixes those areas. if it does then I would appreciate if you let me know.

lol Okay, good stuff. I figured there'd be at least one move tutor somewhere. That's a good thing. If it lets me get T-bolt and/or Flash Cannon on Magneton, say, I'm laughing.Also, thanks to whoever confirmed that the ice path is the same in this generation. That's very good to know.I'm having more fun with Anniversary Crystal than I thought I would. Sometimes I have to just roll my eyes and go with it, but if nothing else at all, it is way more interesting than vanilla Crystal.

And...okay, so Anniversary Crystal is starting to experience a bunch of naming problems, most notably starting from Goldenrod onward. Gatehouses, routes and stuff. And yes, this is after I updated. It's really bad in Olivine City, where the café, the mart, the punishment speech house, fishing guru's house are wrong. To be clear, when I updated the naming as per instructions, clicking on the link actually opened the file with all the raw text instead of downloading it, so I simply emptied the pre-existing file's contents and replaced them (so functionally it's pretty much the same as the instructions suggested). I know the game well enough not to get lost, but it was definitely weird. I think the first place it surprised me was where it called the gatehouse between Ilex Forest and Route 35 the daycare, and called the daycare a warp, or some such. Very peculiar.Team is all in the mid to late 30s, and this game is just bonkers. Skarmory's strongest steel move is Metal Claw, even though stuff like Pidgey is getting Steel Wing. And its strongest flying move is Fly only because that's what I taught it. Feraligatr's only water move is Aqua Jet. Magneton chooses between either Thunder Shock or Spark for electric damage, and its physical attack is bad; also, Mirror Coat which is straight-up glorious. The Bulbasaur line gets Poisonpowder twice in its level-up movelist, once around level 13 or so, and once in the mid-30s. Oops.Still having fun with random trainers with crazy moves, and that's the primary reason I'm playing at this point. The game is not hard for me, since actual crystal is laughably easy, and has been for two decades or so. I haven't come anywhere close to death since reaching johto; the closest I got was that Witney's Miltank killed two out of my five (I had an egg as well), and even that only happened because I got greedy and died to a critical hit with one of them.

Well, even the non-boosted AI can be cheesy that way. For instance, I chose Magneton to kill my opponent's Aipom. So what did Aipom do? Immediately baton-passed to Quagsire, which is immune to electric, forcing me to switch. Or Sandstorm+Protect+Disable to eat up PP and stall. The AI, even the rudimentary AI, will do that.And yes, I know this game's origins. It's still kind of nuts though.

Hell, the entire stream is even available on Youtube and I started watching it but I eventually gave up as move animations were quickly disabled and so I couldn't really tell what was going on.I remember my first battle against falkner. Used my Doduo against is Pidgeoto (or was it a Pidgeot?), and we both decided to use sky attack at the same time. Pidgeoto missed and Doduo hit, probably was an OHKO. Then I did the same against his Glygar, it was a critical which almost ended up with another OHKO. And I was like, OK, it's the first gym battle in Johto and it's completely over the top, but I like it.Dodrio learns Drill Peck much later and I was like, well, since it is overall a better move, I guess it kind of makes sense.From what I remember, Polished Crystal for example is more ordinary when it comes to movepools though they were of course altered. But then with special abilities being a thing you can get a Scyther with technician before the third gym and it's quite a monster. To be fair it also applies to Heart Gold and Soul Silver so in that regard, it's not a problem.

@817 one thing to keep in mind, that might clarify the wackiness of anniversary crystal is that it was developed specifically for twitch plays pokemon. If you haven't heard of it, it is really nuts! I still had my eyesight for the first season and it was one of the craziest things I have seen. essentially, the game is streamed on twitch and the player is entirely controlled by the twitch comments. It uses an algorithm to probably use a sliding window maximum to determine what next action to take. There is just an endless stream of people spamming commands and it is a miracle that the crowd sourced stream of comments manages to eventually beat the game and catch all pokemon.as such, the developers might have decided to make certain pokemon easier to encounter, since the player is controlled so schizophrenically. also twitch plays pokemon is truly a spectator event, so you want as many eyeballs for the stream as possible. so, if you have ridiculous things happen, like pokemon having crazy, unexpected move sets, then that can make for more exciting entertainment.further the external AI is supposed to make the game *very* hard! with the AI, wild encounters are meant to try to annoy you more than anything, having wild pokemon prefer moves that will draw the battle out rather than win quickly, which I think explains why almost all early wild pokemon can learn mud slap.

So okay, I'm in Union Cave now, and this is one mother of a double-edged sword.On the one hand, I absolutely love the number of different pokemon you see on trainer teams. I've seen weird stuff like Gligar, Togetic, Swinub, Houndour, Larvatar. It's awesome, and this alone makes me think on my feet a little bit.But I've also seen some...uh, really questionable choices in the areas I've visited. Larvatar available before the second gym? Skarmory available before the -first gym? Dunsparse available without triggering a swarm? Togetic and Togepi both running around wild? Shuckle running loose? See, it makes sense that these pokemon would actually have natural habitats and all, but it...kind of takes a lot of the novelty away. Why, for instance, am I going to bother hatching the egg currently taking up valuable space in my party? Why do I want to adopt Shucky in Cyanwood? Why am I going to bother with happiness evolutions if the freaking evolution is running wild and I can just chuck pokeballs at it? I feel like, at least to some extent, whoever made this rom was a little bit lazy about encounters. I'm not saying we only need Larvatar on Mt. Silver, but...why not the Blackthorn side of Dark Cave instead of the Violet side? Why did Swinub need to appear in Dark Cave alongside Larvatar, when it was perfectly at home in the Ice Path? I suppose they're trying to give us as many pokemon to play with as early as possible, and that's cool...but that's precisely what makes it potentially easy. Because some of those pokemon have high base stat totals, or type combos that are especially strong in the early game. Seriously, Skarmory alone walls the snot out of the first two gym leaders, and very likely the third as well. When I talk about game balance, and when I pick on manamon for some huge design flaws, this is the sort of thing I'm talking about. By comparison, Aaron Baker did well for the most part h ere.Also, let's talk about movesets. I've now seen a Pidgeoto use Sky Attack, a Shuckle use Rock Slide and a Slugma use Fire Blast. To put this in perspective, said Fire Blast 2HKO'd my Larvatar, which resists it and was two levels higher. I don't have quite as much trouble with this as I do with the wild pokemon thing, but it's still...a wee bit on the weird side. Stronger moves being available later in the game or at higher levels just sort of makes sense, because you have higher levels, greater stats, more moves, better items and thus more options to deal with it. Again, I don't mind a difficulty increase - I OHKO'd the Slugma with a critical Aqua Jet and moved on with my life)...I just don't think the curve is right here.

It has occurred to me to get a really good team of six into the mid-twenties before then, collect several ethers (there are a couple of hidden ones), and a bunch of healing/status-healing items, and just settle in for the long haul. lolMy starter is level 30, my Magnimite is 26, Cubone is 20, and the wild pokemon I'm seeing now are around level 15-21. I hope I'm at an appropriate level for the rest of the game.

I sort of saw this coming, but it's still well done.somemoderatespoilersI wonder how far any of you has gotten in the wave of grunts. I suspected what was coming and died on purpose to the second one. Do they just repeat after a couple or what? Do their levels keep getting higher till they just OHKO you? It seems like a great way to rack up a ton of money if you can hold out long enough.

Perfect crystal is a patch file. And yes, I can confirm that it works with scripts. You might hear some weird gibberish at times, but the game is perfectly playable.So, about to hit Vermilion City, and this Mud Slap business is getting kind of excessive and not fun. I've seen it used by the following lines now: Bulbasaur, Machop, Spearow, Pidgey, Cubone...and I'm sure I'm missing some. Look, I don't mind improved movesets and I don't mind increasing difficulty and all that, but this is just borderline trollish and, as I say, not fun, especially given how one mud slap seems to make my moves about 60% accurate. Again, I'll keep going, but I think the sheer amount of Mud Slap early game is kind of excessive and badly balanced.Also, just found a trainer's Raticate with Flame Wheel, Bite, Quick Attack and Hyper Fang, all of which come off a fairly good attack stat. That covers a lot of types, so while it was annoying to almost wipe to it (team is Ivysaur, Magnimite and Cubone) that's also pretty neat considering it's probably just a level-up moveset.

Yeah, I'm probably not gonna touch crystal clear. That's a bit too much like a sandbox.Also, thanks for pointing out Flame Wheel as an egg move. They made it physical, and I'd never seen a Rattata use the move even if it was technically possible. Also, I'm not flat-out against it, it was just a what-the-hell moment.Regarding Iron Tail, it's a 100-power move, so even though Onyx's attack sucks, that's a big hit. I don't mind extra difficulty or having to think on my feet though.You're right about Mud Slap though. It's freaking everywhere.

Lol I chose to start on lavender town in crystal clear, and turns out i libe on the second floor of the radio tower. I think that not scaling pokemon is so for easier training. Sure you can probably train off of a repeat gym battle, but I think stat training is similar to gen 4 where targeting specific pokemon ups the value of a specific stat. Crystal clear goes way out of its way to let you see those hidden values and tweak them as you like. Starting in locations other than the starting towns has a difficulty indicator, but the scripts won't read the indicator.

@801: Yeah, this hack is known to give egg/tm/event moves to pokemon via level up, as I mentionned with Rapidash and Espeon. Should have told for Ratata with Flame Wheel as I did remember it. Also if I remember correctly, lots of pokemon learning mud slap early so, you will probably notice I guess.

@801 i think that's a good way of looking at it! when I watch James bond movies I turn off the part of my brain that processes what is and isn't physically possible, otherwise I wouldn't enjoy it. so far moves I've seen made sense, but lol flame wheel for ratata is ridiculous  if you are using my updated default_names.lua, please let me know if you run into some map that seems to be mislabeled or that isn't labelled at all, so I can correct it. also, you don't have to give nicknames. I didn't. when the keyboard comes up, just press start to focus the end button, and confirm it with the A key. if it is blank, then it defaults to pokemon species@800 I would recommend to start with Perfect crystal, as it is esssentially original game, but objectively better. then you can go for anniversary, since it gives a very different storyline and changes gameplay much more fundamentally

Ratata actually does get Flame Wheel as an egg move. Has ever since the original Gold and Silver. So that's actually nothing it couldn't already do before. Though admittedly it learning how to do it on its own is a little goofy.I actually like when boss fights throw moves like that at you. I want to have to work for them a little. Though I'm surprised Iron Tail did so much. It may be 100 power but Onix has pretty terrible attack.If you think that's a balance issue, you're not going to enjoy Crystal Clear. I've been messing around with it and it's pretty fun, but holy freaking hell it's easy to unbalance the game because while trainer and gym fights scale, wild Pokemon levels don't. I ran into a level 32 Dugtrio when my team was still only about level 10, and thought I was doomed right there. Until the opposite happened - I chucked a ball because WTF else am I going to do? And I caught it. So instead of an instant loss, I ended up with 1 badge and a level 32 Dugtrio. They said not scaling wild Pokemon was a deliberate design choice. I for one think it's the game's biggest mistake. Granted I have no idea what kind of limitations they might have had to accept with it.

My opinion: absolutely play the original crystal first, or some version like perfect crystal which gives only small tweaks. Anniversary crystal, crystal clear, crystal kizo and others are deliberately meant to be harder/more interesting, and if you play the original, it may give you a good running start, so to speak.As for me, I got Anniversary Crystal running, and while I'm going to keep playing it for fun, I'm already noticing some weird balance issues.Brock's Onyx has Iron Tail. At level 14. This is a 100-power move that nearly one-shotted my Ivysaur from full health. I still killed it, but jesus wow. This is just bad balance IMO. Metal Claw? Sure. Rock Throw, Mud Slap, Bide, whatever? Fine. But Iron Tail is pretty strong for the first gym leader.Rattata gets...uh, Flame Wheel. Why does a normal type get Flame Wheel in its level-up movelist? Does anything about this rodent suggest it should be playing with fire? Again, I think it's interesting when pokemon get better coverage, but this just feels random. I'm half-expecting Quagsire to get Psychic and Jynx to get Flamethrower now, just...because. Or maybe we can give Golem Megahorn and Flare Blitz. I digress. Point is, new moves may be good, but not all new moves seem to make sense. This is the first big red flag I've seen, but I'm sure I'll see more.You're forced to give nicknames. I hate nicknames. Blech. I'll get over this one.Cerulean City's remix is ear-bustingly bad and I hate it. Thankfully, I've just left there, so I hopefully won't have to hear it any time soon.I do like that some particular trainers use nicknames. When I first saw a trainer with Jiggles the Jigglypuff, it made me smile. I only dislike nicknames when I'm not given the option to use one or not. To be fair, when I used to be a regular on Netbattle back in 2003 or thereabouts, I nicknamed most of my stuff. Eightball the Electrode, TinTurkey the Skarmory, FatBastard the Snorlax...and the nickname I have for Cloyster I won't mention here because it's awful. It's a clam, and I love the Simpsons; leave it right there.Experience seems weird. It feels like I'm gaining way more than I normally would. Also, oh my god so many bug catchers dear lord make them stop!Like I say, I'm gonna keep going with it. And I'm deliberately not looking at movelists ahead of time. I'm going to treat this basically as "Pokémon random", which is to say that movesets and such don't really have to make sense. This will make the game a bit more interesting for me, since I can't predict exactly what's going to happen. I don't say it will be harder, though; I save a lot, and it's pretty hard to wall me in a pokemon game.

@798 if you dont use the external AI, then set up is easy. i would recommend copying your PCA folder, since the scripts need to be slightly different for either version. in your new PCA copy, change lang\en\ram.lua footsteps function to what is should be for anniversary from previous page on this thread. also grab my updated default_names.lua and place it in lang\en, replacing the default_names.lua there.then, just grab the .ips file from TPP and use lunar ips to apply it to a copy of the rom you get from PCA. that should be about it. bon apetit

I tried getting rid of the AI stuff, and it didn't appear to work. I'm kind of at my wit's end with this.I'd like to try this game pretty much from scratch. Would nuking everything, downloading the Pokémon Access scripts (the one from the other thread), getting the Anniversary Crystal ROM and setting up as normal work, or are there more hoops to jump through?I'm not especially attached to either my current crystal playthrough or my yellow playthrough, so at the risk of possibly having stuck something someplace it doesn't belong and creating problems, I just want to start over.And no, I won't have the controller issue either; I wrote those values down and will hard-edit them. @796 did you read my above post fully? are you using vba that comes with PCA or did you get TPP's custom vba? when it says waiting, it is waiting for input from the external AI server. you need to have it running in the background. I think it might not work without the custom client though, but worth a shot

thanks guys, good to know!@793 I was actually just thinking whether anniversary introduces the EV instead of DV, but couldn't find anything about it, so for now I am assuming it still has DVs. in regards to the external AI, I was just looking into that as well and I think from what the devs wrote, you need to use their special version of vba-rr. I tried using tsp's pokemon lua scripts in their custom vba-rr, but they didn't seem to work. maybe I made a mistake, I just merged tsp's lua folder with their lua folder. there weren't any merge conflicts, but the script still doesn't seem to actually work... a shame, I would really enjoy having a more advanced AI

See, I hear that, and I agree with you to a point. I don't think gen 4 was the sweet spot, necessarily - gen 5 was even better than gen 4 here, IMO - but gen 2 definitely had plenty of flaws here. Nostalgia talking indeed. I'm often (though not always) okay with those flaws. Poor Sneasel, for instance; I love dark+ice as a type, but he doesn't get good till the special split in gen 4. For me though, lack of EV training is a huge, huge plus. Anything after gen 3 is usually over far faster than it should be, IMO, and not always having the truly optimal move in earlier generations makes battle something you have to think about for a bit. Want an example? Look at competitive battle strats from 2000 or so, where battles could last fifty or sixty turns. Now go watch a gen 8 battle, where the entire thing is over in like four turns. Some people like speed. I don't.You are not doing anything wrong re: trying to get back to Mt. Moon. Those are one-way ledges. Once you're in Cerulean, you can't go back to Mt. Moon till you get Cut.Tell you what though. If Anniversary Crystal uses the special split properly but keeps DVs (not IVs and EVs) in place, then I'm willing to give it a try.Now, this game has some AI scripts to make battles harder (trainers get smarter). It involves LUA scripting. Is there any way to run more than one LUA script at once, or am I stuck between using either the AI script or the accessibility script?

I am really confused by something in anniversary. not sure if this is a gen 1 thing or just anniversary, but once I got to cerulean city from mount moon and then tried to get back to mt moon via route 4, there is no path back! I use path finding to find route 4 and then checking the mt moon entrance as well as the east connection to route 3, it says there is no path. I am very confused.  did i have to jump off a ledge when going to cerulean that i cant climb back up at this point of the game?@391 that is fair enough. I get how needing to consider which pokemon are good and which just aren't introduces another layer to the game that some might prefer. I guess I am biased by the first pokemon game I played, which was gen 4, where the changes made it so most pokemon were at least decent and a lot of moves have been buffed to make them viable. so it is just what I was used to I guess and then realy dissapointed in crystal for being in my view less balanced. also just to clarify, I don't have a problem with some pokemon just being overall better than others and some type combinations making more sense or even some pokemon being pretty much useless, but for my personal taste the disparity of usefulness  in gen 2 is too much

I see what you're saying, at least up to some extent.For example, bug moves. The fact that we've really only got Twinneedle, Pin Missile and Megahorn is just fugly. Heracross and a couple of others can use Megahorn, and it hurts, but things like Bug Buzz and X-Scissor are lovely, and increase viability.It's been twenty years since I didn't know which pokemon were good and which weren't based on either their level-up move lists or their learnsets via either breeding or TM/HM. I know, for instance, that Forretress in-game is a pain in the neck because both its types lack good STAB, but it's also a very good spiker and a premium physical wall; I might use it in competitive fights, but never in an in-game run. Compare that to Lanturn; dual STAB in Surf and Spark, plus paracon support in T-Wave and Confuse Ray naturally; the thing is just made for in-game teams, and it's actually quite bulky even if it doesn't hit hard. So for a newer player, you're dead right. For me personally, it's a nonissue.I still hold to my argument re: the game is harder though. The newer games make almost all pokemon fairly good in some way, and this can be seen as a good thing. However, the vanilla (or in my case, close-to-vanilla) games mean that actually deciding which pokemon to keep and which to not use contributes to the difficulty. If you pick up a Hopip early on, you're going to have trouble levelling it up, and you're quickly going to find out that it's speedy as hell and great for team support, but not a great damage dealer. If you pick up a Slugma, you're soon going to realize that having double weaknesses to ground and water make it virtually DOA for most of the game once it evolves into Magcargo. I don't reject your point entirely, though; when part of the difficulty is in which pokemon to reject, that can be seen as a design flaw.I see what you're trying to say though, and I agree with you at least in part.

I mean if you enjoy half the pokemon, including all bug types, being useless due to their movesets and about 1/3 of the moves being so underpowered they make pokemon that learn them by level up useless as well, then yeah vanilla crystal is the game for you. personally, I don't enjoy finding out the hard way that a pokemon isn't just not top tier, but is in fact useless after leveling him to level 40. the hacks usually just update the moves to their balanced versions as they are in the later games. also pokemon having larger movesets to learn doesn't make the game easier imo, since other people's pokemon get those moves as well. I would say it makes it a bit harder, since as was pointed out, it's harder to expect what kind of attacks the enemy knows.I feel your judgment might be clouded by nostalgia.

I think the difficulty comes in the puzzles. There is one latw game that really ticks me off but maybe the new scripts made it easier.

And that's precisely my point. One of the things that makes Crystal more difficult is figuring out which pokemon get good moves, and which don't. Virtually all pokemon can have decent movesets via breeding or TM though. I'm not saying a Rapidash with Wild Charge is awful or anything (hey, coverage is good)...I just think that overall it makes the games easier.

@Computergamer: It should be a patch file, though if you never played the original I guess that's what you should do first.@Jayde: I'm not sure, I always considered such rom hacks as the more solid cingle player experiences, including difficulty. But I guess in the case of Aniversary Crystal for example the difficulty factor isn't too relevant if one is familiar enough with the series. Though, for this one, the movesets were altered in a way so that availability for some moves can also take the player by surprise. For example Rapidash learns such things as Iron Tail and Wild Charge via level up which I'm not sure it does even on the more recent games, same with Espeon learning Dazzling Gleem and quite a few flying type learning heat wave.
