Thanks all for answering my questions. Now I don't have to be worried about screwing something up.

Re: Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

Nope, most modern both simply have both connectors built into the M.2 slot, and the NvME connector will have higher priority. So, if the spec says that it supports NvME, you should be able to insert one with ease. The specs of different models of the same name differ slightly in processor, graphics card and such, but the mainboard will usually be the same no matter which equipment you choose for your specific device.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

So one more question. If you can choose either on the spec sheet, then does the port itself support both, or do they like make different motherboards based on whether you chose SATA or NVMe? I'm sorry if I'm asking the same questions over and over again.

Re: Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

M.2 is just a form factor.   You can have a Sata M.2 which has no true difference from a Sata 2.5 drive.  However, an NVME drive is  much faster.   see this article for your questions answered more  detailed, if needed.https://www.velocitymicro.com/blog/nvme … ifference/

hmm, okay, will take that into consideration. I know that you can choose either from the spec sheet, so I think that means it supports both.

Re: Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

OK, it is like this: M.2 SATA and NVME drives are totally equal in shape, only the connectors are different. While the SATA connectors are e.g. to the left of the device, the NVME connectors are to the right, but they look exactly identical to the eye (no, you can't just turn them around ). The thing is, without looking onto the specs of the dell device you'll be getting: if the device just supports M.2 SATA SSDs, a NVME SSD simply won't work. If it does support it however, always go for a NVME, its much faster, depending on the PCIe Lanes provided by the mainboard.Best Regards.Hijacker

OK. If I ac't actually replace it, then I'll just ask for the NVME version instead, because I know it will ' quicker.

Re: Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

M2 drives are their own interface, I don't think they make SATA versions of those. They do make SATA SSDs of course, but if it has an M2, they're supposed to be pretty friggin' quick. I am not a hardware expert, so could stand to be corrected if I'm wrong about that, but I've never heard of a SATA M2.

Question regarding Changing an SSD inside a Dell Precision Laptop

Hi. So soon, I will be getting a Dell Precision 3530 from vocational rehabiliitation,, and as of right now, it's coming with an m2 SATA drive. Now I know that the SATA drive isn't itself that quick, so I'm considering instead of just having them upgrading it to a NVME (which I think would be around like 500 mb/s read). Instead, I was wondering if it were possible to slot in my own SSD, like a Samsung Evo 970 Plus, which would speed up the laptop significantly. if I can, that's great. If I can't ah well, but hopefully I'll be able to understand if this is possible, and if any other parts are user-upgradable, or just the SSD.   Thanks in advance!
