I think that's written on the back of your unit. You'll probably need someone with eyeballs to read it to you. Also agreed re, raid being absolutely stupid and pointless on single drive systems. Like what?

@19, yeah I need a lot more than that. And if its going to be SATA-based... Ugh. SATA is a PITA. I don't think I can help you -- I haven't even yet figured out SATA myself. I tried to figure it out like 5 times and eventually gave up because NVMe was so much simpler and easier to program. I might try again sometime. Perhaps Intel/HP have a utility already for this? I hate to sound stupid but have you tried contacting them about this and asking them to help you?

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

When I checked the hard drive using GParted, it referred to it as Sata SSD. That doesn’t sound like a very easy description to go off of; was there any particular way I needed to get that information that you needed? The bios might still possibly be an option, but the more I get into this the more it seems unlikely so I might very well need a utility to get this to work.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

@15-17, no, just reinstalling it isn't going to solve your problem. You need to take the controller out of RAID mode. I have no idea how to do that beyond checking your BIOS; I'm sure there's a programmatic way to do it and I could probably write a small utility program that you could just boot to turn it off, but that's even assuming that the drive you have has a developers reference manual that allows me to tinker with that to begin with. Try booting Linux and seeing what it sees it as; you might have a lot more luck if you fiddle with it in Linux than if you did on Windows if the BIOS has no luck.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Yeah, why is RAID enabled on a single hard drive? That's beyond stupid! If you're going to install Linux, I'd erase the entire drive and use it exclusively with Linux. I haven't had much luck running Windows and Linux on the same drive or even multiple drives. The last time I tried installing to a secondary drive on a desktop, it refused to boot and I had to completely reformat the drive. Fortunately, the primary hard drive with Windows wasn't impacted. Perhaps I simply don't know what I'm doing, but IMHO it's better to either run Linux in a virtual machine or by itself on a computer.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

RAID isn't really a bad thing, but on single-disk installations its useless. Frankly, I'm surprised that the laptop even supports it; RAID is usually only found in server setups where data integrity and mirroring is absolutely critical to the functioning of the business in question where failure is entirely unacceptable under any circumstances. RAID is also only useful on large disk installations where you've got 5 plus disks at minimum.I assume that Windows BSODs because Windows doesn't know how to handle that kind of setup and it causes problems in the kernel. That's a very understandable thing -- since you wouldn't be using a consumer edition of Windows 10 on a server installation if it had windows at all. Its bad, but understandable since a consumer rarely ever needs RAID, and RAID can go wrong if you don't know how to set it up properly. (Plus, lets be real, guys: Linux is better at RAID than Windows is, especially when you pull in OpenZFS.)Anyway, I'm not sure why RAID would be hidden under advanced settings. Disable it and reinstall Windows -- that should solve your problem.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

So here’s the thing, right? Usually the default setting on HP computers is AHCI, which means if you restore default settings, it’s supposed to switch back to AHCI. Here is a little tidbit about raid that I did not previously know about. Apparently the raid system causes issues on certain systems where it will blue screen after a certain amount of time. Funny enough, my computer seems to have the same issue, but weirder still is the fact that before I had to take it in for repairs at a computer shop, it didn’t used to blue screen like this. Because of this recent discovery, I have 2 possible ideas as to why this won’t work.1. Raid is the default option on HP computers, or at least this particular model. In my case, this computer is an HP Pavilion laptop.2. When they replaced the motherboard in the computer, raid was the default option on this motherboard, or they made it the default option somehow. Is there something I might be forgetting about or missing here? I really hope I’m not out of luck on this. It seems the more I figure out, the more stuck I get when I discovered these things.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Oh yeah, sorry about that. Actually, what appears to be the case is that the setting we're looking for is in the advanced settings, which HP disables. Apparently they don't want their users altering certain settings, and they said as much. I found a different key command to get into the advanced settings though, so when I can get sighted help I'll mess around with those settings and see if I can find what I'm looking for.

Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Update. After having sighted people look at my screen to confirm this, I've determined that this page right here describes the layout of the bios on my computer accurately. I've gone through every menu and every submenu in this list, and it doesn't say anything anywhere about changing my hard disk controller type to AHCI. I've followed all the instructions I found, and nothing gets this option to show up. Does my computer brand not allow me to change this? Am I just out of luck here?

Hi.Usually when I install Linux in a virtual machine, it’s a little laggy. I wanted to try running it natively and see if it ran any faster. Since this is an older computer, I’m not really concerned with messing up my windows installation because the game plan is to override it anyway. Thanks Mazen for the pointers; I looked up an article using the search terms you provided and I have saved it on my phone for when I can get cited assistance later. I’ll update you guys in a little while after I try these steps.

Of course it would install on a VM, that's not the issue here. I don't see why that's in any way relevant to the OP's question. You don't have a way to change it from raid to AHCI anywhere in the BIOS? Honestly, I wouldn't bother as if you want to keep the windows installation, it could end up crashing it. or, you could get lucky and just need to boot once in safe mode before booting again.
