Re: Lusternia, Age of Ascension Discussion

Please exercise caution here as Ironrealms taints the MUDding community with their P2W trash. Not to say that the quality of the world is not there, it is, they are very well written, highly detailed worlds, but you will get suckered into the micro transactions market at some point if you're not careful. I have donated to several MUDs, so I'm not trying to say that they do not deserve support because they do, just be careful not to get sinkered into the trap.

Re: Lusternia, Age of Ascension Discussion

Bringing up this thread again for a couple of reasons.First, unlike other Iron Realms Muds, this one seems much more laidback about RP. You need to write a description of yourself and stay in character, but the players seem friendly and relaxed if you ask a technical question.Second, I play a druid, and I read that you never have to kill anything if you don't want to, because you can use a skill called influence to charm creatures. I've never seen that tactic in a Mud before, and I really like it! You can fight if you want, but I love the idea that the Mud gives you other options to advance.Third, I am using the teleport and path walk commands to get around the game, and so far, I haven't had any trouble with finding things. (I'm on Level 10.)Fourth, you can purchase credits, but it seems to me that you earn plenty just by leveling. Since you earn some bonus credits as a newbie, you have plenty to work with when leveling up your skills.
I can't say for certain, but I don't feel like this is a pay-to-win game at all.Fifth, there is crafting. I haven't chosen a tradeskill yet, because as I understand it, you only get one. But I have seen mentions of cooking, tailoring, jewelrymaking, and alchemy, along with a few more I can't remember at the moment. Finally, the thing that really made me want to play Lusternia is the concept of manses. From what I understand, these are basically entire planes of existence that you can purchase and design as you wish. Forget building a house, you can make your manse as big as you can afford. Then you can let your friends into your manse to relax or RP or whatever. My understanding is that you start by purchasing one room, and add on from there.I am playing several Muds at the moment, but looking for a permanent home so to speak, and I am excited about Lusternia. This may be the one that breaks the mold of any negatives you've heard about Iron
 Realms.

Okay, it was ackea that mentioned the exam, see what Welshweyr said in post 25 of This topicI've read the lusternia newbie guide, oddly enough it had a lot to say about pvp so I can see why people assume lusturnia is a heavy pvp game. I'd be interested though to know the differences between the iron realms muds, sinse the writeups are rather different on things.

Well, I'm level 7 and I have yet to write any exam papers. You can earn lessons via achievements as well, and you get bound credits which you can convert into lessons, which itself is an achievement where you get, more lessons. So no to both the overkill RP stuff and you don't have to spend anything.

A firm no, on both counts. though you can pay for lessons, as well as artifacts, but the pricing structure for artifacts is absurdly expensive, artifacts are meerly pay for convenience anyway. You can also buy credits with gold though so you don't need to spend a single dollar of real money if you don't want to. I do reccommend picking up the no brainer lessons package though, $10 for 1000 lessons is pretty good. But again, no payment is forced on you. In fact the only actual pay to play muds around now are the dragonrealms muds, and I honestly don't see that model lasting much longer.

Well we've not had any specific lusternia topics so hay it might as well stay hear sinse I didn't know about lusturnia specifically. The quests and planer abilities sound good, however one thing I heard with some at least of the Ir games is that rp got a bit too! crazy, for example I recall someone being told that to level up they literally had to write an exam paper, a full scale, several thousand word essay! that to me is overkill on rp . I do recall wayback when when I looked over the games lusturnia seemed the one most into questing and solo stuff, where as one other one (it could've been imperia), was far more about the pvp of one sort or another, though again I'm not sure. I also do want to know about the payment system if any, sinse I did believe the ir games were either commercial, or had some sort of restriction that you needed
 to pay for.

Re: Lusternia: Age of Ascension

I haven't played a lot of the IRE games, but I have been a roleplayer for years and years. In regards to roleplaying, I think that some of you may be overthinking it.  One of the things I really like about IRE is how it isn't really hard to get in to the character that you are playing.  It seems to suck you in easily enough and quickly without having to be familiar with a lot of lore beforehand.the various examinations by the houses seem to be more about helping someone acclimate to their new surroundings by allowing you to go at your own rate than it is about trying to make things hard for someone to get involved in.  I much prefer that style than say the  roleplay muds that require you to do a lot of reading and plotting things out before you even have an opportunity to find out more about the inner workings of play.  I tend to want to jump in without feeling as though I need to practically memorize the wikipedia of greatne
ss surrounding a game. But this is from an outsider's perspective, really.  I don't even know which game to start with, and it does seem a bit overwhelming, but complexity can be a beautiful thing.  I think I'll give this place a shot.I'm a social butterfly, so this type of play seems like it would be right up my alley. My question would be just how much does one need to know and use in the way of triggers in order to be successful in both combat and general play?

From what I could tell there were no actual tutorials on how to use it either. I just had to memorize how to get to places after people told me. Anyway. Re: Lusternia: Age of Ascension

The ascii colour alternatives sound like a good idea indeed. I do recall someone having trouble in the iron realms games with directions and finding their way, and commands like "whereis whatever" or commands to say whether you've explored an area can help with that type of thing, just pointing out roughly where you are in relation to a region or town eg "You are a little to the northeast of genericton and far south of questinville" .. While gagging combat spam is a possibility, it's usually better if the games have something to reduce it as well, so that vi players don't have to have screen readers on super fast speed to risk missing stuff, or just get swamped with a lot of messages, prompt customization can also help here too, after all setting up gag triggers isn't a newbie friendly business even with Vipmud (which I use
myself). What we've done on this site primarily (at least when myself or one of the other staff can gett off our lazy rear ends), is list those muds with screen reader adaptations of one sort or another. Of course, most muds can be played anyway so long as there isn't a massive amount of ascii, but obviously the purpose of this site and the game database is promotion of accessible games, so the muds we've listed have all done something or other in terms of game access.

Re: Lusternia: Age of Ascension

For visually impaired, we have a special screenreader command (CONFIG SCREENREADER ON/OFF) which will disable MXP and ANSI colour, suppress ASCII art and some quests that rely on ascii art will have alternate quests (not that many quests have been converted and we are experimenting with this feature). We recommend VIPMUD (http://www.gmagames.com/vipmud.shtml) rather than our online client for visually impaired (though I'm sure everyone here is probably familiar with that client!).Spam is an issue for everyone, of course! We do have a skill (obliviousness) in the Discipline skillset which cuts down on spam (i.e., only see your commands or yours and the target). I've talked to one of our visually impaired players and he said he just prefers to use vipmud and gag or substitute certain spam. As for maps, while you can turn maps off, we do not have an alternative to it other than memory, though in Lusterni
a teleportation is a big thing which helps in navigation. In the old days most MUDs didn't have ascii maps so I don't think that's a big deal.Iron Realms has several notable visually impaired players, some of whom are the top combatants. In fact, one of the lead coders in Iron Realms' Achaea (who began as a player) is visually impaired so we are very conscious of these issues.

Re: Lusternia: Age of Ascension

I can say from playing Achaea that you do have a degree of in game learning you need to do for the various houses, and that's just not my style. I'm there to have fun, not do research and take tests, though I won't knock it since it is very immersive and easy to slip into the world. All I'm saying is that its not for me. Other than that, it was a great experience.
