Re: Some help with punBB.

A lot of extensions are dated, and they keep them around anyway. I could see why some won't work with newer pun-bb installations. Fancy stop-spam worked for me on my short experimental run.

A dear friend of mine has a forum, and she said the anti spam extensions don't work properly on the latest version.

Re: Some help with punBB.

Thanks guys. And yeah, i’ll probably put the forum up once I have at least 2 or 3 games up to talk about, and yeah the introductions thing is a good idea, i’ll try and include that. I’ve already made a thing where if you try logging in with a suspicious looking IP you might get stopped, just hope it works. I’m also going to try and make a few spam bots of my own and run them on the site just to see if the anti spam stuff works, before it’s made public that is.

Re: Some help with punBB.

You would be surprised how many runaway spambots will come up out of nowhere despite the fact that practically no one knows about your forum at first until the word gets out. They probably go on a routine run now and then.

Re: Some help with punBB.

Well a forum specifically for your games would make a little more sense than  attempts at forums I've seen, though I'd probably wait until you have a game or two finished to discuss so that people have a reason to visit. Still, good luck, and Jack's advice about registration and spambots is very true.

Re: Some help with punBB.

The administration features would work in a similar way to how the interface works on here, when you are an admin you are just exposed to all those settings. Being the admin you can also install/manage extentions and configure the forum how you want it. Members also have their ip address displayed to admins. One thing I would do when you setup your forum for the first time is close registrations until you have a few anti-spam extensions installed at least, so that you won't get an initial flood of spambots. Even so, I'd take the hint from this forum and make an introductions topic for your sake and everyone elses.

Re: Some help with punBB.

I’m making a side scroller where you walk around and kill stuff, still in development, and I have some more ideas of games i’d like to make. The forum would mostly be for discussing my games, as well as just being a place to chat and stuff like that. There would be 3 rooms, one purely for my games, one for games in general, and one basically for anything, kind of like the off topic room. Basically, a basic version of what we already have here. I don’t plan on expanding it much, it’d just be there for those who want to use it.

Re: Some help with punBB.

I'm not sure about the setup since this site's boards run on the server in holland and were already up and running long before I was a member of this forum, let alone staff. Admin settings however are fairly self explanatory, once you have an administrator account various options such as editing posts and sticking topics show up, some of which are open to moderators too. You can also use the "administration" panel to change various board settings to do with users, settings for board extentions etc, as well as individual administration pages on each member's profile to alter settings for that member such as changing their user group or name. Before getting into all the business of board setup however Darth Vader, one thing I would ask is what exactly is this forum on your site for? A lot of times over the years people have tried to setup their own forums, and its ended up not working well because people are so focused on "having a forum" they never ask the question of what that forum is for? or why people should visit their! forum as opposed to this one or indeed any other. Obviously there are! forums that work, but those tend to be the ones for specific things, for example forums devoted to specific games or websites or set subjects.so, unless you have a very specific purpose in mind and a subject of discussion for your forum that is not covered either here or on another major forum, you might need to have a think about your over all strategy.
