Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Actually, parts of the state that wern't connected to the state exclusive grid did just fine. Blame the state for passing laws allowing wholesale electric prices, so a kw price shot up from 12 cents to $9.00, and now some people are getting 200k electric bills, not to mention the fact of not mandating reserve capacity, and disconnecting the whole state from the country to dodge federal regulations, and then not weatherizing any of the powerplants. The snow thing isn't one off iether. The same would've happened with  a  massive heatwave or other emergency.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

@24 The state should have done a lot more than that, like not let much of the power grid collapse and stick us with non-drinkable water for a week or more. Granted, it rarely snows here, so I understand the roads not being cleared. But a lot of balls that shouldn't have been dropped were, and if I say much more then this will become another political rant of the kind that is never productive here.Nevertheless, it's surreal. We're back at 80 today. It's like none of this happened, except now there are people who still don't have drinking water, concerns that missing people may have died at home due to exposure and still not be discovered, etc. Absolutely crazy. Thanks for all the tips, everyone. I did have to tread on ice briefly, but the stomp method made it more manageable than the stupid things I was doing before.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

ok, so ice is generally easy to walk on. Take each step firrmly, don't stomp, but lift your foot up and set it down without dragging your foot. If you do this, you should be ok. But seriously the state should've done alot more to clear out the snow and ice from the sidewalks and roads. As for shoes, in Turkey it is a rule that you take off shoes when you enter a house. It makes sense honestly, so you don't have dust, mud and sand, and snow sludge on your  floors.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Snow is not especially slippery. Ice is a different story. And ice buried under snow, or covered with a thin layer of water, is just awful. In Canada, at least in virtually every household I've ever been in, the general rule is that you take off your shoes when you get inside the home, and only put your shoes on when you're about to go outside. I was reading a novel that took place in America, and at one point one of the characters (a teenage boy) woke up, got out of bed, threw on his clothes and immediately put on his shoes before going down to breakfast. For me, this is absolutely weird and unheard of; you'd only do that if going to breakfast meant going outside. In this instance, he was just going downstairs in his house. So yeah, good manners is to leave your shoes at the door so you don't track grit and mud and god knows what else through someone's home.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Plant your feet slightly apart, about shoulder width. Walk slowly taking little steps and plant your whole foot on the ground. If you happen to slide, and believe me, it will happen eventually, Don't panic. Hold your balance until you stop. Bent your knees slightly so your center of gravity is closer to the ground, this way you'll have a better balance.I loved ice when I was a child, I still do actually. We have ice each year and as kids, we used to slide on patches of ice just for fun, this is how I learned. Having balance on it is the key, you just have to learn by practicing.I would have loved to go ice scating this year too but sadly due to covid the facilities are closed.Seriously, ice scating is the best practice you could get, it really helps you getting used to how your body works on ice and it will elliminate the fear of it. Atleast it did for me.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

This is ironic, because here in North Carolina we’ve only gotten snow once this year, and that was a few months ago. Since then, we never got ice, and we’ve always gotten snow and ice here for as long as I can remember. Surprised to hear that Texas has gotten hit pretty hard. That being said, I would invest in some ice cleats if I were you. They’re these little rubber things that you attached to the bottom of your shoes, and they have these little spikes on the bottom that will stab into the ice. Once you put those on your shoes, you just walk by stomping everywhere so that the cleats can do their job. The only disadvantage to those is you can’t keep them on your shoes if you have to go inside because you can actually damage your floors in your house if you keep them on. They’re also really hard to take off.I remember a fall I had before I got my ice cleats in training. I was walking to a crosswalk to go across the street, but I ended up stepping on the curb instead of the ramp. Unfortunately, the drop off between the curb and the street turned into a slope of ice, so when I stepped I slipped forward and fell flat on my ass. It didn’t hurt that much, but it did kind of hurt my pride.

The last time I fell on ice, I was on slightly canted, old wooden steps, and landed flat on my back. Bruised my tailbone. It hurt like hell. It's really quite alarming to be upright one moment, and down the next. It can happen very, very fast.We have portables here too, GCW. Both my elementary school and high school had them.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

I rarely do, though I do have one memorable tale. We had portables in my middle school For those who don't know, that's the sanitized way of saying classrooms in trailers. I came out the door and the ramp was iced up. Boom, there I am on my ass at the other end of the ramp, faster than I could have blinked. I hit my head hard enough to see stars. That said, I was going into an environment I didn't know was slick, so I wasn't really trying to react as if there was ice, and ramps are slippery most of the time anyway even if only a little water or ice gets on them..

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Walk through the grass. It can still be slippery, but the ice builds up on the cement and especially on hills it can be very slick. The best advice I have is to test each step before putting your weight on it. Go slow, use your garbage cans as extra support if you need to. The straight up and straight down approach works, but that takes practice. The shuffle, if you go slow, and are able to keep all your weight off of one foot, should be okay if you slide just take that foot and put it back, or let it slide until you find a less slippery section.Lots of people fall, and a hypermobile joint is risky. Maybe let someone else take out the garbage?

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Here in Canada, we get plenty of ice in the winter.Walk slowly, and do not shuffle. Take short, slow, plodding strides, and sort of stomp your feet. As in, pick your foot up, move it forward, and plop it straight down. If you're scuffing or shuffling as you put your foot down, and there's ice there, you're going to have a higher chance of sliding. Ice's main risk is that friction is fucked up, so if you're just sort of slamming your boot or shoe-soles straight down, there's a lot less risk of slipping and sliding.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Thanks all, definitely appreciate it.Part of my issue is that my right shoulder is hypermobile, meaning it's dislocated so many times that it comes out easily. So a fall isn't just a bruised ego for me, but a real hospital risk. Fortunately I have pretty solid balance and rarely fall, but ice is definitely a new factor I don't know how to account for.Maybe I'll just try sticking it out until this melts. I'll be a bit less risk averse if I ever get this shoulder fixed. Thanks again, I'll keep these tips in mind if I need to risk this.

I *love* posts like this. I live in Illinois, and we haven't been above freezing since February 4. We also have about 15 inches of Snow on the ground. To the question at hand, bend your knees, spread your feet out, and cross your fingers. Walk slow. Honestly, I have dealt with ice my entire life, and I kind of have gotten used to it. I still fall a couple of times every year, and my dad fell just the other day. I wish I could help more, but it is hard to imagine what Texas is going through. Ice and cold are normal here during the winter. Everyone just deals with it. I can't imagine not knowing what to do when it gets cold. This is a crazy time.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Seriously, Texas is getting slammed this week. 8 days now without getting above freezing.Yeah, for me it seems to help not to stand in one place for too long, like move your feet so they're not planted. This advice may be wrong, considering I don't live in an icy place, but I'd say that also in my experience that you shouldn't turn your feet really quick. Each time I've almost fallen it's because I turned my foot really quick or I've stood in one place for too long.Last Friday I slipped and fell on my butt on the ice. Mimi was watching too, really scared her. I kinda feel bad about it... Although there wasn't much I could do. Just glad she didn't come down with me.
