That's a very loose definition as all games let you take control over the action, else, it wouldn't be a game, it would be a movie. These terms describe the perspective you will be playing in. In first person, you wouldn't see your character on the screen. The only time this would happen is with things like mirrors and reflective surfaces in the game. Some games will let you look down to the point where you can see your legs, and sometimes you see arms and hands in the case of a racing game where they are grasping the wheel.Where you lose this in audio is that you never really see your character under any circumstances. It doesn't make sense to put a looping beacon in the center of the screen to represent them, so that part is lost. Side scrollers for us then involve 2D movement and a panning camera. First person games for us would allow for 360 degree movement on a 3D playing field or in a 3D world. Sure, if you wanted to be spesh, you could redefine the term FPS to, "first person sidescroller", but why? Your logic is broken.You do realize that side scrollers throughout history have always been third person, i.e. you can see your character. Do you know how jarring it would be to do a side scroller in first person because of how snappish it would be. It would be like standing between two pieces of posterboard and when you look one way, you're looking at the edge of the one piece, and when you look the other way, you see the edge of the opposite piece. That would give sighted people motion sickness.I'll grant you that in our circles, you might consider side scrollers to be first person, because we don't have a representation of our character on our screens. But that goes away if you have tools like some of these do like the sonar and spier that let you look in a different direction than you're facing.All in all, I can't imagine why this is even being discussed. I think since you most likely wouldn't have an idea of the difference in a practical form, but to explain it, a third person, you see the image of the character. You don't see through their eyes, but you still control their actions, and you see and hear the stuff they do. A First person perspective, is when you see it through their eyes. As long as you are in control and you have the control over the game and all the action, I personally think from my view it defines it as an FPS. It doesn't need to be rotational, have more than 3 cordinates, to be classified as such. You are still moving your character, regardless of facing at an angle, and you are still aiming your weapon by turning either left or right. As long as you are in control and you have the control over the game and all the action, I personally think from my view it defines it as an FPS.
