Yeah, I just use comon sense and win defender is on because it doesn't want to be turned off, but I have this windows install since 2017 and I am fine. The only time I got a virus was in like 2015 when my browser always redirected me to some weird sites, so yeah, don't know what happened then.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

Yeah, I mean, I also made it like 10 years or something ridiculous without any antivirus whatsoever by applying common sense.  Don't do this.  I am a demonstration that it can be done, but there is still a small element of luck and you shouldn't do it.99% of the time, though, that virus can be tracked back to you doing something that you probably knew you shouldn't.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

The best antivirus is not to download any viruses . Seriously, I used Xp far longer than I should've done for a couple of years, and never got a virus simply by applying logic and common sense and going on the basis that if it looked dodgy, it probably was.And I don't mean cutting off the internet with a big rusty knife, or only ever going to .this is a very secure website with no viruses dot com; which now I think about it is probably the most sure way of getting a virus .For those few occasions when logic and common sense are not enough, windows defender as others have said. And for those things like malware which windows defender will not touch, malware bites.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

@16Whatever vulnerability you're referring to, I think your keyboard autocorrected it to something entirely unrecognizable. Also there is a difference between OS vulnerabilities and antiviruses and, in the general case, expecting the antivirus to protect you from vulnerabilities is misunderstanding what they do for you.  As long as the OS has a vulnerability it can be exploited, whether you run an AV or not.  All AVs do is look for specific code patterns that are registered in their database.  There's always a lag time of days to weeks on new viruses.  If you want to never have a vulnerability exploited the best you can do is always patch the system promptly, never download links from the internet, and always only run signed code from devs you trust.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

After fighting with various AVs for more than 7 years, I just stopped installing any of them. Most of them are either so inaccessible it's not even funny, or you have to fight tooth and nail to remove them if you don't want them anymore. Hell, the way most AVs acted back when I was still using them, they had most characteristics of your typical virus! Nope, these days, the best thing you can go with is Windows Defender and, most importantly, common sense. Don't download shit you're not supposed to download. Don't get programs from sites that try to get you to install a million other bloatware programs. And for fuck's sake never use things like chip to get your files, which all come with custom downloaders that probably include all sorts of nasty shit with your files.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

So the key thing about Windows Defender isn't that it's accessible, or that it's integrated with the OS.  The key thing about Windows Defender is that Microsoft can't ever let it get hacked and can't ever let it fall behind.  Every other antivirus can just do whatever, because they're not actually selling you an antivirus, they're selling you a security teddy bear that happens to find viruses, and by the time you've gone to them you're in the market for teddy bears.  But if Microsoft's offering (being as it's now built into the OS) ever becomes a problem, the collateral damage to Microsoft is tremendous.  So they won't let that happen.  Could i, yes, but it will definitely get addressed promptly as soon as it starts shaving millions off their stock.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

I completely agree with Camlorn. Windows Defender is the most screen reader accessible antivirus product and it stays out of your way. It's built directly into the operating system and receives definition updates multiple times a day automatically via Windows Update. Microsoft knows how their operating system works better than anyone else, so I'd say you'll be fine as long as you leave Windows Defender alone. Don't disable it if it's screwing with BGT applications, just create a folder and tell Defender to ignore it. As long as you keep Windows up to date with security patches and don't install programs from untrustworthy sources, you should be fine.

Re: What is Your favourite antivirus?

You should only ever use Windows Defender, but no one ever believes me when I tell them that.  Most other antiviruses are less secure because nowadays everyone just uses Windows Defender and the market as a whole is pretty much uninformed consumers.  Get an insecure AV and it's a backdoor into the whole system, that's not hypothetical, it's happened lots of times.
