Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

@6, The firmware appears to be stored in a standard Windows CE CAB archive with a renamed extension. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to extract the actual KeySoft files, which appear to be stored in a file called everest_kernel.bex, which may or may not be encrypted, possibly not since I was able to find another hidden product key through it, apart from the ones that are already known. Interestingly, since the upgrades are CAB archives, I was able to install ASAP, Another Slight Atari Player, and add support for .sap files to the KeySoft media player, just by renaming the extension.

Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

I’d actually be interested in getting hold of one of these, if only to try it out. Something different, anyway.

Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

Right. The architecture is more or less runnable in a virtual environment, it's a matter of how and what to do to get the actual firmware to run. This is all legacy stuff anyhow since the mpower is done for, and the Apex they're clearly trying to get rid of their stock (have you seen the price of the units now?)

Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

Correction: Dos can run under Windows virtual machines by running a disk image through Dos. Less indirectly, I do have Windows Mobile 6 with Mobile Speak, but it's best run on Windows XP. However, that probably is not the case for the Braillenote's firmware. Also, it's using an Intel processor, but they aren't x86.

Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

Unfortunately that doesn't work on the Apex. You'd need an earlier unit to get access to the remote synthesizer option. You could also use a patch cable and record its output that way, or try the 15 minute demo for DOS.

Re: can a braille note be tourned into a vertual machine?

As far as I know, this isn't possible. There isn't a way to obtain the Windows CE OS or the Keysoft software to my knowledge. Even if there is, Fusion doesn't support Windows CE and I don't even know if it would run on an Intel processor since the Apex uses an ARM one.If you want to use Keynote Gold as a speech synthesizer, I think you can connect it to your computer and put it in Remote Synthesizer mode. You'll need a USB cable and a driver for NVDA or whatever screen reader you use.
