Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

I wouldn't try Chinese myself, it's incredibly difficult for someone who has been studying Latin-based languages, such as English, Italian, just the basic rules in French, and two years of German language learning. Though german is of a different origin.

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

Code Factory also sells Vocalizer for NVDA, and that could be a little less expensive. It seems strange that you are unable to install anything on your computer. If you can get that problem resolved, a lot more opportunities will become open to you.

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

You could try Vocalizer for NVDA. It's a little pricy, since I think they make you buy all 70 voices rather than just the 1 or 2 you'd want, but you could save up for it. They give you a two day demo anyways, so here's the link:https://vocalizer-nvda.com/

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

Where do I find that screen reader? Is there a portable version? I've looked at the braille code for Mandarin, but I don't have a working brailler, and i couldn't find a portable braille emulator for my computer, since I can't install anything. I tried their dictionary, and I like it. I tried it out on a few Chinese essays, but there were some characters that weren't in the dictionary. Any links to portable Chinese screen readers with good TTS are appreciated.

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

When I started studying Chinese, I used Chinesepod. They were free at the time, but I remember hearing they went paid shortly after I took a break, and that was several years ago so I have no idea what's up now.Mandarintools.com has lots of resources, though I'm not sure how useful they'd be early on. I like their character dictionary and C-E dictionaries, because they have pronunciation links, unicode for the characters, and write the tones as numbers rather than with diacritics. Also, since they have both a character dictionary and a word/idiom dictionary, it's easier to break things down into their components and understand the nuances a bit better. There are better Chinese TTS voices out there; the defaults that comes with voiceover on iOS sounds a lot like the way the narrators talk in audio textbooks, IME.

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

A few clarifications:Rather than visiting Wikipedia to learn the Mandarin braille alphabet, use the book World Braille Usage as your reference. Hardcopy and downloadable versions are available from Perkins. I have heard anecdotal evidence that the Liblouis translation of Chinese braille codes is incomplete. I do not believe that Duollingo offers Chinese courses, though that could be a good place to start. What you really need is a good textbook and/or a good tutor is willing to work with you patiently. Chinese requires a lot of time--it requires over 2000 hours of study to achieve proficiency. Compare that to just under 170 hours to be proficient in some European languages.

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

I don't think that's the correct way to handle things, sir. Those of us who are learning another language do not need to read only, but to learn how to pronounce as well. Come onn don't  tell mee ethat wikipedia will work, because in many cases wikipedia will not be quite accurate.I wish I could provide more information on the thing, but unfortunately I'm not a chinese speaker though I'd like to learn it as well.  However, there's a screen reader called ZDSR or zhengdu, its translated into english as well and its voice sound quite nice. You can try the chinese voice, it sounds cool!

Re: Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

well do what sighted folks do, if you can. but you will have to do it a bit different. go to wikipedia get the chinese braille alphabet and learn the chinese braille code. write it down with a perkins brailler or slate and stylus. or if you can wait until the orbit reader 20 very very low cost refreshable braille display comes out and convince someone to get you an orbit reader 20. then find chinese lessons online put them into word then translate into chinese braille with the free send2braille utility by american printing house for the blind. oh you may also try DuoLingo I hear its accessible and also free.

Trying to Learn Chinese, At the end of my rope

Hi. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I want to continue to learn Chinese, I know a few basic greetings, but I want to take it further. I was surprised that NVDA supports Mandarin, but a robotic voice won't get me anywhere in a tonal language. I don't work, so buying TTS isn't an option, and I don't have admin rights, so I can't use the speech platform voices either. On top of that, how will a blind person who is not a native be able to recognize the different characters and meanings, since one character can have several meanings? I have two questions. First, do you know of any NVDA add-ons that provide reasonably accurate Chinese pronunciation? Second, how does a blind person who isn't a native learn Chinese, since the language is sight-based? I use Windows 8, and I know how to add the keyboard, but I don't know the difference between traditional or simplified characters, how to write and learn pinyin, especially when the screen re
ader doesn't know how to interpret the symbols, or how to find reading materials that I can make progress with. I don't want to force myself to memorize all the characters by rote, because of the meanings issue, and that I don't have a viable way to tell them apart. Thanks for reading, and I hope you write back soon.
