Re: What Happened To Malinche Entertainment?

Moderation! As everyone undoubtedly knows, posting of hacks or commercial games without paying is absolutely and totally forbidden on the forum. The status of semi abandoned games that are no longer available though is a rather problematic one, since on the one hand it's completely true that nobody would be harmed if the games were posted, and with the lack of accessible games it's definitely really sad when something just plane drops off the map without a trace simply because the developers can't be bothered with it anymore. On the other, the problem is the game's owners do still own the right to the games and could start selling them tomorrow. This is why games like Bsc's, Bavisoft's or Code Factory's can't be hosted or have download links in the database without the owner's permission. This is not really a boundry I'd want to push on the forum I'm afraid, particularly with the fact that we do know people in the
community who freely take the "supporting developers by buying their games" as something of an optional extra. So, The answer is no, we can't officially have links to download the malinch games on the forum. That being said, what happens off! the forum via people's email isn't our business, and while if a person was found to own a hacked copy of a commercial game like say manamon they'd likely be in trouble, if someone who had the malinch games were to make a kind present of them to their friends via email but happened to be unable to pay malinch for said presents, well that wouldn't really be an affair for the forum would it? . @Madgamer, welcome to the forum. Interactive stories can come in various types. The Malinch games are traditional intteractive fiction where you type commands like "get box" "go north
" or "open box with key" A great many of these games exist through a long running hobby community and can be extremely experimental. I confess I don't play as much traditional interactive fiction of this type myself since I found getting stuck on guess the verb type of situations or illogical puzzles frustrating, but there are some good examples kicking around such as andrew plotkin's dreamhold, the exceptional Worlds appart, Babel, Paul Obrians Lash or earth and sky series, or Pytho's mask. These are available as Guiatarman said on the If archive, though you'll need an interactive fiction interpreter such as winfrotz, or wintads to play them depending upon the game.Traditional If has it's moments, but other than some if role playing games which include combat and more rpg like tactics such as Kerkerkruip and Eamon deluxe, I tend to prefer gamebooks. Like guitarman I am a huge fan of gamebooks, stories that move via m
aking choices instead of typing commands. As wel as the sites Guitarman mentioned you could also try the fighting fantasy project, project aon and chronicles of arborell (these have pages in the database, as do several interactive fiction interpreters like filfre or winfrotz). Any further questions please ask.Hth.

I don't know how to post links but go to ifarchive/games/zcode and you will find baltimore24 in the b section there. That one never really caught my interest like the rest of the games did.Hth.

Re: What Happened To Malinche Entertainment?

Hi Madgamer.Well first of all welcome to the forum I think you will have a great time on here! No there are not any audio reviews of text adventures as far as I know. I don't think that would be much fun but if somebody made a text adventure audio review I would be willing to check it out. If you want to check out text adventures go to ifarchive.org. I'll be honest though your not missing much if you don't play text adventures. Personally I'm not a big fan of text adventures mostly what I don't like is the stupid puzzle solving you have to do. I believe you can tell a good story without all the nasty puzzle solving. If you really want some good text games try choice of games, choose your story, and DelightGames. Their great text adventures without puzzle solving. That said I was drawn to malinche games because of the amazing descriptions in the audiogames database. They are: a pinch in St. petersburg, grand damned, endgame, saints in sin city, azteca
, the first mile, greystone, and the pentari games. Reading the descriptions of these games is fun and it's about all you can do since they're no longer available.Hth.

@guitarman No, I don't have any. Besides, we don't really have an official status of the games other than the fact that Howard has pretty much left the scene. What I know is that security is a weak area as far as z-based text adventures are concerned, possibly because about 98% of all IF games not only can be found off of ifarchive, but are completely free.

Re: What Happened To Malinche Entertainment?

Guitarman, the demos are completely independent of the full versions. Security is not one of the components of inform, at least not that I'm aware of. Infocom games were on diskettes sold before the internet was used, so either you had them or you didn't, no security involved. If you remember World of Darkness from Dreamtech, when you registered the game, it asked you to create a save file before the registration machine disappeared. This is because it was not a hardcoded registration system, all it was was an interactable object that allowed complete access to the game. Malinch games, however, don't have some registration machine in the first room, so no registration system of any sort is built in. It's either you have the demo, or you have the full version.

I'm wondering if there is a way to hack the malinche games to play the full versions. I would get some kind of crack or something but I'm to afraid to get viruses. But since he's not selling them anymore and there not available at all what does he expect us to do? Anyway, I'm glad to get a chance to try the demos. I tried the first mile and it seems very well written. Actually I like the writing more on the first mile than I did on pentari. Thanks again blindncool!

Re: What Happened To Malinche Entertainment?

There was an article on the malinch blog in 2014 where Howard Sherman essentially threw a great big strop, saying that while he made games nobody wanted to pay for interactive fiction and blind players all needed too much tech support and how the world hated him. Of course the fact that he was charging 49 usd per game for something which is mostly available for free and that his games, while undoubtedly good weren't actually too much out of the ordinary even as far as if goes as compared to something like Hadian lands (which still retails as a tenth of the price), wasn't a matter he considered. At that point he still did say the games would be on sale and the demos available even if he wasn't making any more, but that obviously changed. As I recall, his stuff wasn't bad, but wasn't exceptional either, indeed if you've played the pentori prequal you've probably got an idea of the type of thing he writes.

Although I did used to read his blog which was pretty interesting. The wikipedia article says malinche is gone but there is nothing about why or what happened.
