Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

Another file manager that is inspired in Total Commander, and that is cross platform, is double commander. But it seems is not accessible, so I'll have to ask in their forums. On windows, but on mac or Linux I don't know, but In windows is well a little bit accessible, only the men'us and setting and other things, but in other parts not, so I'll have to contact them.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread here - I've tried a handful of alternatives the last 24 hours. I like Xplorer2 and Explorer++. They both are very similar. The one thing I can't seem to get working properly is the Windows+E keystroke to activate Explorer++ and bring into focus. I used Autohotkey to run a simple script to run Explorer++.exe, but it's not being brought into focus. Xplorer2 does this automatically, and I'm wondering anyone has suggestions on what to do for Explorer++. I also like that Explorer++ allows for clicks to be played when you select folders.

Hello,I honestly did not expect this thread to be so active. However, I would like to use the old version you mentioned on the first page of this thread, but I can't find it. I wouldn't want to spend money on an explorer, given my financial situation, and the one of my country. The new non-trial version seems to be quite slow for me.I would ask you, however, to send me the old version privately or here, if I don't ask too much.Thank you.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

@45, I have a lower end computer, and the whole reason I switched from original explorer was because my entire explorer would go unresponsive in pretty much any folder with more than 50 audio or video files. Xplorer2 will very rarely hang for me, but when it does it's only for about a second. Taking advantage of both Tabs and Pains can probably help you out if you're doing large transactions between many folders. Also, I think there's a way to specifically mark multiple files to perform actions on in Xplorer2.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

I've also been looking into File Explorer replacements. I don't really need one imminently but I'm curious. I think I tried Explorer++ and 7zip File Manager, and while both are lightning fast, I seemed to encounter slowdown when going into folders with thousands of items. I have to wait seconds for the folders to display when going into them. This makes the process of moving stuff around in large folders very slow for me, and I've found that standard file explorer seems to be reasonably fast at loading such big folders. It's slower overall, but for big folders it seems to be faster. So out of the replacements people recommend, do any of them somehow avoid hanging when loading large folders, especially when going in and out of them repeatedly to move files around?

@39 yes - the items in the context menu that you would normally find in File Explorer appear in the context menu in Xplorer2. I have to say, it's much faster and smoother to navigate than FE. It also helped to switch from the ribbon-style menus to the traditional menu bar.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

@Origine, Here goes nothing.1. Any explorer-based feature that's directly built into Windows and that other programs can take advantage of, Xplorer2 will take full advantage of them. And what did you mean about specialized context menus?2. I encourage you to take a look at help and tutorial content to look at features you like, but I personally like:Customizable keyboard shortcuts for literally almost every functionThe dual-painTabbed browsingYeah I'm missing a few.3. I haven't really used TC before. Go with both, try them out and pick which one you like more.4. It looks like you can launch QAP from literally anywhere, so I think so, though I don't use it.5. The address bar indeed allows you to directly type to a path if you know where it is. If you're not sure, you can enable an auto-complete in File Explorer settings that happens to apply to everywhere, which fills out paths for you as you type. You can also press up and down arrows to cycle between auto-completions for every subdirectory in the current folder.Yeah, it's mighty useful!Hope that helps, and please, continue to throw questions!

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

I've been looking for another explorer for a while but never made the move. What I don't like with Windows explorer is how slow it is to drill in folders. So I see that Xplorer2 is the most popular in the thread. I was wondering:1) Can you do anything explorer can with xplorer2? Can you access network locations, have that specialized right-click menus, etc?2) Are there compelling features xplorer2 has that explorer doesn't?I also wonder3) Anyone compared TC and xplorer2?4) Can quick access popup be used with any explorers or does it work only with TC?5) What's with that address bar in explorer? Like it's for typing paths? How is it that cool?If people feel like they want to answer those questions, that would be very appreciated and you don't have to answer all of them, that is why they are numbered.

@leibylucw, While this isn't exactly fun, I suggest you take a look at the help and tutorial stuff to see what it can do. The whole point of the dual-pain is that so you can browse in two places at once, though you can also open separate tabs that open in those pains. I'm not really sure what ultimate does and pro doesn't but again, if you find something you'd like to do, it should always specific from experience what edition it works with and up.

Go to Xplorer2>Tools>Advanst and click yes to the popup. Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

The best file manager in my opinion is Total COmmander. I love it and I use it daily. The below scripts when launched in succession will replace Windows Explorer completeley. Keep in mind though that sometimes Total COmmander gets installed in C:\totalcmd rather than in C:\Program Files\Totalcmd, so I advise you check your paths. If you want to boost up your Total Commanderification by 1% I also recommend a program called Quick Access Popup. It is donation ware but there is no expiring trial or anything. Can some Explorer2 fans tell me if there is anything better in it than TC?https://nunosoft.pl/dl/TCMDExplorer.zip

Sorry for double post...@Masonasons: If I disable those, I'm unable to Shift Tab into Address Bar. How am I supposed to use it then?I know people who litterally have never used there address bar, even in normal Explorer, and actually didn't know it existed until I told them. I laughed in their face.Eddit: Wrong there/their/they're.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

I mean...You can install the 32 bit or non-trial one and just launch from Task Bar or Start Menu if it's that big of a pain. If you absolutely must have it replace, then you can find where the files for configuration are stored and keep backups to replace upon reinstalation. Or... you could just try it out and if you like it, buy it.I'm a big fan of Xplorer2 as well. I've still yet to buy it, but I'm probably going to come the end of the year. The customizability, coupled with how god damned fast it is, and the fact that you can go into pretty much any sized folder and it loads near instantly. Unlike original FE which goes unresponsive when I open small folders.

Hello,It seems that Xplorer is the most mentioned here, so I would like to try it myself, only that unfortunately on their official website I only find trial versions that will expire, and honestly I would not want to reinstall the software to get rid of the trial.Could someone send me the old version you mentioned here, please?Thank you so much.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

I'll have to check Xplorer2 out since it seems to be the most popular one that's been mentioned here. I'm encountering this weird issue with NVDA where after a certain amount of time, it will just stop reading items in the list view of File Explorer. Restarting NVDA doesn't help, and I'm getting tired of having to reboot because I can't read items in FE.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

I have to say, I'm amazed by the amount of people here who simply don't use xplorer2. Guess I kind of considered it common sense, much like replacing edge / internet explorer with chrome / firefox / brave, etc. Then again, I'm sure there are people out there who don't do that, either.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

So, not a replacement, but a protip:Control panel > file explorer options > view tab > advanced settings, find launch folder windows in a separate process in that treeview, check it.  Will instantly get better performance across the board.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

@Lucas1853 Might as well try anyway, and I believe it literally only requires a reg key modify anyway, though if you're not into doing that, look up a tutorial, make a backup, ETC.Gotta agree though. Was fortunate enough to get a key donated to me by a good friend, and simply haven't looked back since, even though the accessibility is a little clunky in places like the advanced options controls.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

About Xplorer2 I have an installer from years ago for the free version which offers the Explorer replacement, but I think the author removed that in later versions. You have to install the pro version to get that now, which has a decently long trial but will completely expire eventually and you'll have to pay for it or undo the replacement. It's amazing though I love it so much, and I'm only on the really old free version.

One of the best all-in-one solutions is Xplorer2. It has several tiers, including a free version. It's customizability is unparalleled with almost anything else out there, while be fairly user-friendly.

Re: Windows Explorer Replacement

The best alternative I've found is Free Commander XE. It has customizable keyboard shortcuts, and it can even overload the windows-e key to load itself up. I used it for a bit but I went back to explorer because tabbing around was a bit inconsistent and it took longer to sort folders than I would like, on it, but it definitely has a lot more features than explorer.
