I got Talkback to work. What did I have to do? Download it. Voice Assistant is good, but I like Talkback better. Voice Assistant isn't like Voiceover, and Voiceover was hard.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

@boy, VA and TB are two differen tscreen readers (Samsung's and Google's respectively). Try asking Google Assistant to turn on either, or tripple click the home button. Also try bringing up power options and pressing and holding with 2 fingers. If it works, you'll hear your notification sound and TB will turn on.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

I now have a Galaxy A 21, and so far it's working better than the I Phone accept... How do you activate Talkback? Holding down both the volume buttons for 3 seconds does nothing, and that's what a lot of websites say to do. Also, are their two different screen readers (Voice Assistant and Talkback), or is Talkback just one? Other than that, even using it without a screen reader is accessable, that's how good of a phone it is! Though I sometimes need sighted help with remembering wear some things are, most of it I just do by memory.

@Boy, generally the A series, from A-11 to 71, would be a good choice, especially if you're in a budget. You may also look at getting a used S series for just about the same price, and high tear quality, IE, High tear screen, high tear materials, etc for the same privce as a mid range.@11, what Apple hate did you see in this topic?

VoiceOver has been consistently better at this since the beginning and I'm extremely skeptical of your claim that regular qwerty input on Android can beat braille screen input on an iPhone; I would have to see it to believe it. One of the main reasons I switched back to an iPhone was the inadequate typing experience on Android.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

@boy I actually suspect you are having an entirely different issue with your iPhone. I think what is happening is you are holding your finger too long on a letter, so the new slide to type feature gets activated. While in this mode, swiping across letters will attempt to input a predicted word. That is I assume how you messed up the spelling completely, either that or as Griff said moving the cursor. If it is the former, you should be able to move your rotor to the slide to type option and turn it off, or simply do it by opening your keyboard settings, though in there I think it is called quick path typing.@MyDearWatson I would certainly like to hear touch screen typing coming even close to the speed of a braille keyboard. Many people say this, yet in truth they just aren't so good in braille. I still believe it is impossible to type fast on a touchscreen by just using the on screen keyboard.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

Hi, Let me address a few things here, I will not even talk about the blatent apple hate or hate for IOS that some people seem to have, and how much android access is touted to be just as good if not better than IOS. I ought to know, considering I am sitting with a samsung atm, having sold my IPhone away for financial reasons. and I so wish I hadn't, or at least gotten even an IPhone SE older moddle if not the IPhone 6. Oh well, I'll stick it out. but here goes. 1. Boy, what I suspect you are doing is or did in that instence was to have moved the curser from the end to either the middle or to the start. This isn't easily done by mistake, but can happen if you are not used to touch screen and are just getting used to it2. By reading your posts, looks like android is a platform you are leaning towards, and as you state in your first post, on IOS writing took you 15 minutes, where as on android you did the same thing in just a few minutes. In that case, My suggestion would be to go with what your mind/ heart suggests and that is go with an android, because after all it will be you spending the money and will be you who would be using the device after that, so it is best I find to go with what you want in such cases.However,3. The writing and touch experience on android Sucks to degrees I can not describe, and no, I am no apple fan boy, but only speak from the experience of having owned several Current as well as old android and apple IOS devices. So if you are having issues with IOS screen touch and typing in general, be prepared to deal with even worse on Android. As for what Samsung to go for, anything in the S series would be good to go for, if android is what you have your heart set on, but then there are the one plus and the google pixul series as well. If you are considering an Apple IOS IPhone, Anything at all or at least in my opinion anything that you can aford would be far far better.the XR or the new SE 2020 would be good bargains, although september is just around the corner in case you want to wait for the 12 and see what it brings and go for it or the other devices that recieve price drops after the 12 comes out.Cheers

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

@boyIt sounds to me like what you need is more training, not a different phone. There are also other software keyboards for IOS that you may like more, such as flicktype or braille screen input. If you want to try Android I would say go right ahead, but generally Iphones are considered better for accessibility pretty much across the board, and Android is generally considered to be even more complicated for beginners.  I just don't want you to spend money and find out it's no different or even worse, while not tackling the real issue. If you have a training center or blindness organization near you, or know someone who might be aware of such a thing, I'd look into getting training with them. And if you do go with a Samsung phone, just know that they really aren't cheaper than most Iphones unless you go with the Samsung A or J series, in fact they are more expensive than most of the Iphone models.

Actually on my samsun you won't switch edit fields unless you either hit next on the keyboard, or you double tap a different keyboard. And those "Blindie phones", suck, and I advise people to stay away from them unless theyv want to look like a 95 year old, or unles you just can't for the love of cheese can't gett a touchscreen. I recently saw one with both tactal arrow and select keys, and a touch screen as well. But in typical accessible blind phone fashion, its overpriced, In my opinion.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

The typing actually isn't that hard. What happened was that I was typing the e-mail address, then I slid my finger down, it made a clicking sound and messed up the spelling. I've tried some Android devices, and I've had much better experiences with them. So, to the person who said "get a Samsung", does it matter which one? Samsung makes a lot of different phones. About the keypad use, I'm not saying that's what I need, it's just what I used before Verizon had I Phones available. I know they have Android phones, so I guess I'll just research and see what I can find.

Re: blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

@dongargon, Agreed. If you're even considering another touch-screen device, it seems you'll have to keep training for now. And while  there are emerging Android solutions with keypads, I've often found them to be clunky, out-of-date and slow. I wouldn't even want to test how long for me to send an alpha-numeric message, and I do know how it's generally done (press 2 twice for A, press 2 thrice for B, press 2 four times for C, yada-yada-yada). When I've looked at modern phones with keypads, they're either too expensive for mid-grade quality and features at best, and if they are cheap, they're even worse due to the keypad. So, what should you take away from this? If you desperately need a phone, with all the money in the world, but you don't happen to spend much time with a touch-screen, and you don't do much with it (phone calls, weather, messaging, ETC), grab the Blind Shell I guess?Ideally, I look for these following features in a new phone:Runs Android 9 or above. With brightness at 0%, screen reader built-in curtain mode enabled, and careful use over Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC, and data, the battery to last me at least 3 days. Now this is possible cause I own a phone that literally has, "power", in the title.Mid-tier or above chip set.4G mobile data or above. Is new, supporting updates for 1/2 years (feature, and 3 and above (security).Display, I generally stick around the 6in area. Can someone please say that they've seen a keypad phone with some or all of these features by the way?

If you like Apple, keep your iPhone. If you want something a bit cheaper that still does what you want and finishes the job nicely, get a Samsung. Trust me, Samsung's Voice Assistant is pretty usable. You also pretty much have access to all your accessibility settings by swiping with 2 fingers to the left or right.

blind accessible NON-APPLE smart phones

I know that a lot of people here use I Phones, and I did use it for some things. However, my parents are saying that it's time for me to upgrade my phone (by a new phone from Verizon) and I'm wondering now, if their are phones that have at least some of the features that the I Phone has that isn't an Apple product? Yes the I Phone is good, but it just does too many strange things and I simpley don't understand how to use all those weird apps. What I mean is trying to type on it or deal with all the voiceover commands, even adding a new contact or writing a text message is near impossible. It took me about 15 minutes just to enter my e-mail address, because this happened:I typed 3 letters, then put my finger on a place that made a different clicking sound. I didn't notice that, finished typing my address and, it was spelled completely wrong. I tried again, same thing. When I tried doing this on, I think it was an android that someone had just to see if it was any different, I was able to write a full text message with no problems. Before the I Phone, I had the Samsung Intensity 2, which is a button operated basic phone. However, it does now have free access to the internet, e-mail and full accessibility. So, is it better for me to just stick with Apple products or are there better options for completely blind people? I also know about Android and that might work, I just don't know if it has all or some of the features that I Phones have. From what I've seen, that would work better.
