Re: fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

@Deucalion,  there is no need to copy the text into notepad if you want to check spellings, or indeed reread any of the text from the game window. Your using NVDA I believe. In NVDA the review cursor can be used with the numbpad in the desktop keyboard layout, or control NvdA arrows in the laptop layout. The revue cursor is basically a tool used to read the screen in places where there isn't a system cursor or other viable commands, such as in terminal windows like the one Dungeon of reminiscence is played in. In the desktop layout, you can read by line using numbpad 7 8 and 9, by word with numbpad 4 5 and 6, and by character with numbpad 1 2 and 3, in the laptop layout, use NVDA control shift arrows to read by character. this way you can always check the spelling of any words you need in the game itself, as well  as reread any incoming game text.Hth.

Because I don't know how to spell the names of different characters and I have to copy the text in notepad. Personally, I think it would be a step down.

Re: fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

@Pt6, glad more is coming, and I'll be very much looking  forward to upgrades of this game or something else, since yes, there definitely is an audience for this sort of thing.I'm afraid for me, a story lives from it's characters. with someone just called "your sibling" I just didn't have a lot of character to get hold of, partly because sibling is such a coldly emotionless term as opposed to brother or sister, or even friend or lover, partly also because there was nothing about this sibling to give me a reason to believe the principle character had any relationship to them at all. I'm certainly not against representation by any means (there is a hole topic somewhere on this forum about blind characters in games, of which there are very few), but for me at least, when I play a game in the second person, I like to play as a character with their own relationships and history who is part of a different world, even if it's just a short hack n slash fest, here I'm afraid the slate felt so blank there was literally nothing on it, which was a shame since I love the idea of a dungeon that is almost a purgatory and a character piecing together why they are there. I'd personally suggest perhaps considering making each of the character classes a different story. maybe the warrior is searching for his husband and sparring partner, maybe the mage is looking for her apprentice etc. That way it would also be good to play as different classes and get another characters' story, as well as experiencing different tactics, stat choices and so on.Again, this is your game, and I'll certainly be playing it either way just for the good old dungeon monster slaying fun, just my perspective.

Well pt6, like the game. However I have a few ideas.I don't think as you buy things that things like armor and weapons and well potions should continuously go up in price. There should be different armor and each could cost a certain amount of points.Weapons to for obvious reasons.100 bucks for potions or even 50 coins would be fine. There needs to be a saved game feature.

Re: fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

@Dark thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah this was really only meant to be an intro game; something I can dip my toes in the water as far as programming goes, so I knew a few things were probably not going to "feel good" so to speak. That being said, with the reception of this one (and knowing there are people that do like these styles of games) I would definitely like to make another that is more balanced, more in depth, and has more of a threat of defeat than this one does. Behind the scenes, a lot of the mechanics are simple and not really fleshed out, but I honestly didn't expect it to be played by anyone but me lol.The idea was to make the classes be a kind of difficulty system with the warrior being the easiest to beat it with, and the mage being the hardest, but it ended up being that the warrior and ranger both do well, and the mage has a hard time in the beginning to middle, but it eases up in the end.I think the thing I put the most time into was the writing, so if that came off okay, I think I was okay with the end result no matter how the rest of the game felt. The reason I left the sibling unnamed and undescribed was to allow the player to kind of fill in the blanks. I didn't want the sibling to be MY iteration of the sibling, but whatever the player wanted them to be (male or female, any race, color, etc.). That being said, I definitely could have fleshed it out more. Thanks so much for playing, and for all the feedback.

Re: fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

Okay I apologise for my previous mistake, I didn't realise that there were two versions, and I believe I downloaded the wrong one. I've now finished the game, so can offer some thoughts. As Aaron and others have said, Thanks to Pt6 for the access work done on this one, having played the two vversions it does make a difference. Also i can definitely confirm that terminal style, command entry text rpgs are something I am very much a fan of myself, the old Eamon games (Now available in the browser thanks to eamon remastered), , warsim, warsim's little brother the wastes, not to mention the likes of kerkerkruip are all games I've had a lot of fun with in the past, indeed I miss playing some of the old dos style games like fallthru this way, so if more like this is coming that would be awesome. As to the game itself, I liked the progression and the idea of recovering pieces of a story, Beware! spoilers ahoy! if you've not finished the game, continue no further lest yee be spoiled by the spoilers!though I do wish the main character's sibling was named or at least described a little since constantly just calling them "your sibling", just didn't give me an idea of who they were, where as naming and describing a specific character whom the principle character was related to would've made me feel more connection to the events and what was being recovered.Spoilers end here!As to the gameplay itself, the music was wonderfully cool, but I'm afraid I did find the balance a little off. Once I realised it was necessary to flee to enter the shop, I did that roughly each level, and split all my gold between weapon and armour upgrades. this meant for much of the game, I was doing 10 or more damage and had hundreds of hp, whilst enemies were doing one or two damage, indeed I never needed to use the healing potions, or the defensive stance at all throughout the entire game (I was playing as a ranger if that makes a difference). The only enemy who actually was doing more damage to me than I did to it was the final boss, and even then, since it had 250 hp and I had 370, I still did it in with over 100 hp remaining, and still no need for those healing potions,  it wasn't doing that much more damage. You might consider, either in this or future games adding some extra combat tactics, or some special moves, just to make combat a little less of a constant state of hitting A, indeed I always enjoy games that require you to think on your feet and pay attention in combat to what the enemy is doing rather than just repeating the same attacks over and over.I also wish the between fight text and the names of monsters changed a bit throughout the game, since I always love games where you go deeper and deeper into a darker world, one reason I did rather enjoy the various bosses with their increasing creep factor. All that being said, this was still a really nice play through, I enjoyed the music, the story was fun, and pounding on clouds of rats and skeletons and such is always a nice way to spend a cold morning . Thanks again for the game, and good luck in either modifying this one, or creating more in the future.

Hey @stirlock, if you're having troubles, you may need the .NET Core SDK Runtime in order to play properly. For the most part, it should be self contained, but if you don't play many (or any) games that use .NET, you might be missing some key .DLLs. I have the link on the store page that should help fix the issue for you. Let me know if it doesn't.

Hi,Oh I forgot to clarify, I wasn't talking about hashtags. I was referring to ascii symbols in roguelikes. So when we try to play a roguelike, all we normally get is a bunch of symbols being spoken, instead of saying it's a wall it's more like, hash at dot hash hash dot at hash, with no coordinates or anything.I do have another tip, instead of saying (a)ttack, (d)efend, etc, I'm wondering if something like "choose: a: attack, d: defend, f: flee, h: heal" might be better, although I'm wondering what other people think of this.

Re: fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

Thanks for unrestricting me, Aaron, and hello everyone. I am, in fact, the developer of Dungeon of Reminiscence, and I'm both grateful and humbled that you guys are even playing this game, let alone providing feedback. As I was telling Aaron, I only posted it on itch.io as a way to track my progress as a developer, to see the journey of where I started to wherever I end up. I had no idea there were people who were going to play it, let alone a group of folks who really enjoy these style of games. I had no real intention on going back to it (or making another) but after some discussions, I think I might end up there again in the future once I've gotten some more mastery of the language I'm learning.First of all, allow me to apologize for the weird quirks of the game. I know it's unrefined and doesn't have a whole lot of polish on it, but due to what I mentioned above, that's why it was released in the state that it was in. This was my first attempt at a game to help learn and solidify some early concepts. I hadn't considered things like the accessibility of it to the blind community, simply because I honestly did not expect anyone to play it. But something I want to note: while I'm very new, and don't know all of the intricacies of playing a game blind, that does not mean I won't be keeping that at the forefront of my mind going forward. The reason I released the "blind accessible" version as quickly as I did was because I wanted to make sure you COULD play it with relative ease. Adding in a menu to turn it on and off is more complex than you might think, moreso for me as a new developer, so it was just easier to edit my code entirely to produce something that would work better in your screen readers.Going forward, my hope is to make sure my games are as accessible as possible without sacrificing too much from the core game experience itself. Whether you are blind, colorblind, deaf, hard of hearing, or any number of challenges you may face, gaming, to me, has always been about finding the most enjoyment possible from a medium that we all love and share together. That's been my mission since I started, and I will continue to try and provide that going forward. Please note that none of your feedback goes without being heard and absorbed, and I am doing my best with the little time that I have to practice and learn. I used games as a kid growing up to escape from the harsh realities of life, and I hope that those who play my games will be able to use mine for the same.If and when I get to the next one, I'm definitely open to playing any games you feel have "done it right" so that I can learn and grow from those games. As I said, I don't know much about how the blind community plays games like these, so when you tell me things like Aaron did (which screen reader they use, removing the hashtags to separate menu items, etc.), that all helps me be a better game developer. It's a slow process for me, as I don't get a whole lot of time to practice each day, but I am adamant and determined to learn and hopefully be a name that people recognize as someone who is passionate about games, and it shows in the products I release.Thank you all again for playing and for all of the feedback. I honestly cannot express my appreciation enough.

fully accessible small rpg on Itch, Dungeon of Reminiscence

Hi all,A very small, simple rpg called Dungeon of Reminiscence has just had a new version uploaded with no text scrolling. It's a type name, choose class, press any key to move, fight enemy, kind of rpg. It almost has incremental elements. You can fight as much as you want, or, you can flee, which takes you to a shop if you are successful, upgrading your weapon, armour, adding potions, or resting for a small amount of gold. It's a short game maybe five or six bosses, but I really hope the dev adds an endless mode.I actually beat the original version last night, and within hours of me saying that the screen reader was saying things like "y ou o pen y our eyes", he's uploaded an extra version, blind accessible, with no scrolling whatsoever. He's surprised that anyone has played his game and he enjoyed my feedback.I've told him about this forum, and please, if anyone has an Itch account please leave a comment there as well.https://peterthomas6.itch.io/dungeon-of-reminiscence
