Re: movement system in FPS games

In an FPS I would rather walk with W A S D, and be able to turn by one degree with left and right, and turn 180 degrees with up and down. I mean one of the up and down would be enough, but let's give all four arrow keys something to do

Re: movement system in FPS games

At Connor oh yes, the same thing I also said before. It gets especially interesting if you have a more advanced mouse with a few more keys for other quick actions. Swamp does it exactly right by almost having a correct movement system, why moving forward is the right mouse button though is still beyond me.Greetings Moritz.

@7 I agree completely, don't see what the huge appeal of arrow keys is.Gamepad works dutifully as well, it just might be a little harder to aim with the gamepad at times.

Re: movement system in FPS games

Both, I want to be able to switch between them if I'm using a mouse.  If I'm not, the arrows feel more natural to me after having played audio games for so long, but if a game only uses WASD it isn't a huge deal.A disadvantage of the arrow keys is also that you usually need to use modifiers for either side stepping or turning along with the arrows, which I find to not be as fast.

Re: movement system in FPS games

I actually prefer the W A S D system symply because it allows for much finer control. For example, a lot of audio "fps's" aren't actually fps games. They are technically closer to third person shooters as I understand things. In a traditional shooter, W,A,S,D are used for moving and the mouse is used to aim. I would personally like to see that system but in an audiogame form of some sort. Swamp kind of accomplishes this, but not really as there is no up and down aiming to speak of. For up and down aiming it may be possible to use a radar ping off players like in rtr but change pitch as you move up and down. But this isn't a discussion of what makes a good fps so I'll leave it at that.

Re: movement system in FPS games

WASD is for left handed people, arrow keys are for right handed people. I'm right handed so i fancy the arrow keys one. I'm also acustom to q and e for 45's, however.EditDoing some further reading, apparently wasd would be used in FPS games which use a mouse, where you use wasd for moving, and the mouse for more detailed movement. I've also read WASD makes it more efficient to get to numbers in playing certain games where they're special.

Also, I think the title is a bit misleading. Its not any special movement system, its just a key layout.

movement system in FPS games

Hello everyone. My friend and I recently had a debate on which movement system, in fps games, is better and why.We couldn't decide, so in the poll above, we ask you to vote between:The WSAD movement system (you use the w, s, a, and d keys to walk, left and right arrows to turn by one degree, Q and E to turn 45 degrees, and space to jump). The arrow keys movement system (you use up and down to walk forward and backward, shift left and right to walk left and right, just left and right arrows to turn by one degree, Q and E to turn by 45 degrees, and space to jump).Keep in mind that we were talking about FPS games, so you use CTRL to fire and all that shit.I know this is probably kind of pointless and stupid, but like I said, we couldn't decide and I'm interested to see your opinions. Thanks in advance!
