Re: nvda and acio conflict

agree wholeheartedly with post 3. My interface is a true asio device (meaning the drivers you install and even the manual states that you will be using the asio protocol)no problems at all. Using asio4all for devices that do not employ it as a mediocre band aid solution will insert noise, delay things way more, and as you guessed it, make you lose speech altogether. You can actually use your screen reader through your asio device even when using the asio protocol, by using the regular dwm (I think they are called) drivers. Meaning, you can either route NVDA through it under the synth selection dialog, or set it as a default windows sound device using the control panel. Only minor downside is that speech will have a bit of stutter because remember, asio has the highest priority.

proper ASIO devices don't do this.

Re: nvda and acio conflict

@6, WASAPI will do fine now since it will give you the lowest latency possible (though ASIO will work, but not ASIO4ALL). As I said, nowadays it just sets WASAPI into exclusive mode. I don't know what it did in XP.

If all Asio4all does now is set Wasapi to exclusive mode, you wouldn't need it for low delay; simply set Reaper to use Wasapi and the block size to 0 and if everything is set up correctly, you'll get the lowest delay possible. Of course, Asio4all might be doing other stuff to get the delay lower than native Wasapi can, but when I tried it on xp, the delay was still far more than it is with sound cards with native drivers, and I really haven't needed to use Asio4all since then so I don't know if it's gotten better now.In any case, I'm fairly certain I heard somewhere that the probloem the op describes will happen with any asio device. I haven't tested my asio drivers to see if the behavior described by the op happens, and I am unable to test them now as I just cleaned my PC today and have to reinstall the drivers, but if anyone is interested I will test them out.

In other words you can't use NVDA and asio on the same sound card because the asio wil take over. I have an audio interface and several other synthesizers with asio support which I sometimes use, but I haven't tested to see if the behavior described by the op happens.

Re: nvda and acio conflict

@OP This cannot be done as ASIO4ALL needs exclusive control over the device. If you had to use it for some reason, you would need a different card to route NVDA onto.@2 None of this is helpful to the problem.

Re: nvda and acio conflict

@2, this is not a fix whatsoever. @1, ASIO4ALL is just a wrapper around WASAPI that forces WASAPI into exclusive mode -- it is not actually ASIO. If you want ASIO, use an ASIO-capable device, not ASIO4ALL. I know someone who uses ASIO all the time -- true ASIO -- and this never happens to him (or if it has he's never told me). That should tell you how "reputable" ASIO4ALL is.
