Re: quests in audio games

One thing I did in EC was, upon realizing that a shovel can be used for digging instead of just whacking things, to make digging in certain places reveal things. One or two of these are kinda weird (what does the 4-1 quest have to do with digging in the sand?), but yeah. There's one that makes perfect sense if you find the items involved, but realizing how and where to search for them is the secret (hint: digging is not the only way to search under things). There are others that would be pretty conspicuous if you knew what you were looking for, but would otherwise just look like regular items. Even then, it's not necessarily obvious what you should do with the thing in question, and you'd need to check out the area for ideas. Then there's the one you might not notice if you aren't paying attention, and it can quickly stop being available if you wait too long. Come to think of it, that one could use a little more to let you know you're on the right track. Hmm.

I sure am a big fan of quests with stories, and would like to see more of them in our community.

Re: quests in audio games

I wasn't counting the entombed quests because those were specially generated fights which you pretty much were inevitably going to run into at some point anyway. Oh they're great fun no doubt and give some nice extras, and I always love it when games mix things up with random content and things to find, however in this case I sort of thought Dardar was talking more about quests with at least a baseline story and more than one objective. Likewise, I am not certain if you count, say the multiple steps needed to complete a mission in a game like Gma tank commander as quests, though they could be given the amount of obstacles to go through and such.

Re: quests in audio games

I can actually give one example of quests in a hero's call actually, or entombed. It doesn't tell you the quest object is there. You just know it when you get to that object. Not many audiogames use item indicator for quests.

Re: quests in audio games

Interesting question, especially for someone like me who is a big fan of quests. I think  in an audiogame, an actual quest needs roughly the same things as a quest in a mud, that is a journey, obstacles that are interesting to avoid and an interesting story. it doesn't matter if your  quest object is shown by an audio beacon, if there's an interesting way of finding that object, if you need to traverse a maze or look around a big area to find it, then the essential mechanics of the quest are still there anyway.Look at some of thee swamp quests, especially those with multiple components requiring you to visit multiple locations. Yes,these are essentially item fetching quests, however you firstly have to traverse the zombie wilderness, secondly need to go into a building which is a maze like area often populated by zombies which require close quarter combat, and then find your object. Many of the quests have background and an objective, and many even  open up new areas of the game such as new maps or new weapons, as well as giving you a view of the world. The same is true in Bk3, despite it being a side scroller, and probably in tomb hunter as well. Obviously, the sorts of obstacles and challenges will be different, EG if your traversing an audio maze and fighting in real time rather than typing text directions or making choices in a text game and fighting in turn based combat, but but many of the challenges are similar. You don't even have to stick with combat or even combat games. I love it when strategy games give me a mission to complete with story and objectives attached, indeed I'm really looking forward to the upcoming galactic colonies game just for this reason. hth.

quests in audio games

Hi there,So this question comes from a quest game nwbie, both in terms of text games and otherwise. I've always been rubbish at them.In muds and text adventures, quests usually consist of looking at the right object, examining the right noun, ETC.But how does that work in an audio game?I'm assuming most audio games have beeps and such to indicate where there is an item, or a ladder ETC.So doesn't that make it pretty obvious? What was the best audio game quest you ever did, and what made it great?
