Defender you can actually go gaming rig  without gaming rig prices though, at least  not to a significant extent. You can get a system with an AMD H series processor, which is alot cheaper than intel offerings, while offering much better multicore and similar single core performance. I recently got an rp17, and this machine is cooled like a monster, with 4 exhaust ports on the back and sies. In blind tech groups, I see the experienced users trying to get people who ask for advice to buy $500 machines, or shit like celeron processors or i3,. I saw a guy try to convince a guy asking advice to get 8 gb ram, and a fourth gen processor, claiming ddr4 didn't make any difference in performance,  ansd a forth gen processor was adequate for  daily tasks. But the truth is, there really is advantages to getting an i7 as opposed to an i5 or 3, or an r7/9 over an r3/5. I don't know what it is, but screen readers feel alot more responsive with  higher end components, and there really is benefit to getting them. As for battery life, the whole thing seems pointless to me, for me, battery life is irrelevent, as I keep my laptop plugged in constantly, so that isn't a consideration at all. And those underpowered processors make screen readers etc feel laggy, and are much more thermally throttled, so you pay a price. Keyboards are really getting bad. Toshiba used to have desktop like keyboards, but when they went out of business, I have  been hearing about terrible designs.  Like one reason I got this pc because the keyboard was reviewed to have good key travel, and because of the presence of a numb pad, but the insert key is shaped exactly the same size as the keys around it and the arrow keys etc, are crammed right in with everything else, and don't have distinguishing size. Laptop keyboards really are unhealthy and harm your typist speed. After using a desktop keyboard  attached to a laptop, I realized just how efortless typing on one is, since I hadn't used one for many years, so I went ahead and ordered a full size keyboard to hook up to my laptop for more comfortable typing. This machine does have a dropjaw port though. Not having an ethernet port would be a deal breaker for me. I can see over 40 wireless networks, and that pretty much garanties that I would get a terrible signal.

Re: something in computer industry i find pritty vorrying

I am with those of you who don't prefer the paper-thin laptops. My Computer Career, the school where I am going through to receive the training I need to get into IT, issues laptops to all of its students. They are entry-level laptops, but for entry-level machines they seem to do quite a job. I am running a Lenovo  Thinkpad and all is going well with it so far. It has three USB ports, and there is a fourth port that I thought was a USB port. However, I found that it isn't, and I don't quite know what it is supposed to be used for. Anyhow, the laptop is thin, but not what you'd call paper-thin. One thing they taught us in one of our first classes, is that thinner and lighter is not essentially going to mean a better machine. For one thing, it is going to run hot much more quickly because of the confined space inside.Simter, out of curiosity, what is the brand of the laptop they're providing? Again, jus tcurious so that I can research it a bit more for myself.

I'd rather not have underpowered processors for the sake of battery life though, I want the choice to have a couple hours less runtime and a couple years more relevance, without having to spring for a gaming or business laptop with the associated markup.Plus, not even being able to replace my battery?  Having to pay 3 times the amount I should to fix a keyboard or screen because they have to replace the entire top panel to fix it?And why did the dropjaw RJ45 port not take off outside of business laptops anyway, I don't want to have obnoxious extra dongles just to get a stable connection when I need it or when the WiFi is down. And we can't forget about the keyboards with barely any travel that suck to write on...Point being, there is a comfortable middle ground between ultrabooks and workstations, for instance the slim gaming laptops becoming popular now.  I just wish they were more common and cheaper.

Re: something in computer industry i find pritty vorrying

I've personally never seen the appeal of small / thin laptops.  Sure, they're adorable and easy to carry around, but personally for me, as a student, I'm always carrying a backpack anyway, so unless a laptop is small enough to fit in my pocket (like my gpd win 2,) I don't care how big it is because it'll be going in the same backpack which is not changing sizes. As for USB C, USB C is amazing!  I can charge my laptop with my USB C power bank and I refuse to go back to the old days!I'm actually the complete opposite of the OP because I'm trying to get rid of all of my USB A accessories.  I only have 1 left and once I find a wireless headset as reliable as my ancient h800 with a USB C dongle and USB C charger I'll be completely USB A free.

Re: something in computer industry i find pritty vorrying

HmmmAgree with you there.Used to be against the single headphone microphone combo jacks.Except now I have a device a set of headphones by senheiser the hd 410s which just runs like a miniture stereo. As for usb c there are hubs for regular ports, hybred devices and others now. What I don't care for is the semi demize of the large drives on laptops.Yes there are 512gb and 1tb ssds but I have used a couple drives lately one for data the other for the os.Some stuff can still be done like this but even so.The only manufacturer even doing duel drives is lenovo hp had one for a while but not anymore at least not from pb technologies which is where I get a lot of my stuff these days.My latest unit which is at least 2 years old was one of the first entry level devices into the duel drive on a laptop thing and I absolutely like it.Eventually what will probably happen is I will get a miniture pc or one of those prodesks which is just a laptop in a bigger box case and maybe I can put another drive in that.To be honest the ports are not a big deal as I have a tp link 710uh hub which pluggs into the usb2 port leaving the 3 ports free for things.I have a slimline usb dvd writer that sits off to the side which is good for audio disk writing whenever I use that and thats about it.To be honest, laptops seem to become more for those that move around.I suspect the way laptops are going and for what I use the computer for, the next system may not be a laptop as such but either a miniture pc or a pro desk one of those boxes where you can easily modify things.I hardly ever take my laptop outside like I used to and while I like the quietness of a laptop, a small desktop sitting under the desk and a small screen would be fine now.I have some gaming speakers and such and its not that bad. What does concern me is the belieef we can run the os and everything on 1 drive or run everything from the cloud or carry round hdds.Yes hdds can be carried round but I have had drives fail, may be close to replacing a drive or so sooner or later.SSd drives are getting cheaper but still.Flash sticks depending on the price, you can easily carry round large 512gb sticks now if you want.If there are things I miss, its volume control on laptops, the fact that everyone now doesn't have different sound cards. While you may use emulated software, unless you have a small entertainment workstation like me, speakers are little crappy ones. The manufacturers can get round these with enhancements which just make things really overdriven and stupid.Because the graphics and sound are 1 chip, if one fails they all go.There was a time where I could lose graphics and sound would still be fine.Of course I really loath that no matter what soundcard you buy, if its on a chip its mostly realtech or viatech as a chipset no matter what the display is.I also want the old analog cards back as well as the internal midi synth, whoever got rid of that should be shot with a rifle.I mean don't get me wrong, coolsoft and my major emulation banks of soundfonts mean I can emulate just about everything from an sb16 to a nes but I still want the good old days back.I have yet to see an fm midi old sounding sb16 crappy synth emulated as font. While yeah its electronic shit, the fact is that a lot of the older games from duke3d down were written in that synth, and well doesn't sound the same. There are a lot of things I don't want back.Serial and paralel ports are still cool but hard to fit things to.I don't miss dialup networking though, I don't care for the fact that with broadband on fibre and wireless if the power drops the phones no longer work. Then again I don't miss paying 2.50 dollars an hour on a slow connection.

Re: something in computer industry i find pritty vorrying

I mean, it's fine. Those new ports that everyone complains about are faster and more power efficient.  Your USB hubs and such should be able to power off them in most cases, for one thing.  it's not a case of smaller is better, it's a case of smaller, more power efficient, and faster is better, plus also USB-C supports weird things like the USB port and the charging port being the same port if I'm not much mistaken.  You can always just get a device with more USB-C ports or an HDMI or whatever, you don't have to go walking around with a bunch of hubs.  Besides, the trend isn't finished yet.  The computers with USB-C are here, the consumer devices are following next.As for soldering components, the problem with that is that the modern increases in performance--battery life, speed, etc--require shrinking things for the sake of speed, believe it or not.  There is definitely a market advantage in you having to replace your device, but the real problem/distinction is that things like how thin the wires are and how long the connections are actually make a big difference these days.  To put this in perspective, the speed of light says that you can only go about 5 or 6 meters in one clock cycle--and keep in mind that a CPU has a lot of circuitry in it, if you stretched it out end to end. Those of us who want to get the big, bulky machines that make up for the form factor advantages by being power hungry monsters can, but as someone who is in that group, I wouldn't anymore,.As for fans, it's fine.  People always get freaked out about their machine getting a bit warm.  Your machine getting warm isn't going to do anything to it.  They've got tolerances.  If they stay inside the tolerances they're fine. If they don't then it'll turn itself off.

something in computer industry i find pritty vorrying

Hi. I also seen this in phones industry, but in my opinion on computers it can be even more harmfull and or anoying. There is a moving in computer industry i think is pritty awquart and vorying. It is the fact that to some people, seamingly to a lot, it is more important how a computer feels then it works. It all started with apple in 2016 where they decided to put nothihng but USBC ports on their mac book pro. I first had the hope that we wont get followups in the windows industry, but now i have seen this was probably a naive way of thinking, cause a lot of the market always follows apple no matter if they do shitty stuff or good stuff. In the beginning of this year, my school got new computers, desktops by dell. These things are so got damn small that i don't wanna know how they look inside to get all the components stuffed in there. Not to mention that you only had 3 usb ports which for a desktop is pritty ble. Now, i am geting a new school laptop, cause my school wants this, i don't. Especially when i saw what ports this thing has. It has one single usb port and 2 usbc, and i think it has headphones. Also it has micro sd instead of sd. Yeah, micro sd, these things that like to get lost or break in half when you accidentally press a little bit on them. I have to switch class rooms a lot of times which now means i will have to wear the comp, the usb hub +powercable where you are lucky if you find enough power sources, and the sd cart reader, and also a ethernet adapter. And i am sure this thing is thin as a paper, if not i can not imargine why you would build it like that. And yes, of course it is nice if the computer is not heavy or fids into a small backpack. How ever if such things are the consequence, i would rather buy a heavy one which then allowes me to work without 100 extra cables and devices. For an example my new laptop that i bought for my self (hp zbook15) is pritty heavy. But i have 4 usb ports, a ethernet port, a sd cart slot, a good working fan for the cpu and gpu, and i can replace the battery without needing to open up the thing which is also nice if the thing bluescreens and doesn't rescue it self, and also there is something on the upper right i think minni hdmi but i am not sure about that one. I also saw an asus laptop for an example where they stuffed the fan behind the bag which is a bad idea cause then the fan keeps blowing against the bag and in unlucky situations it is harder to get the air out, also this thing gets pritty warm if you don't have it completely open and the fan always blows like hell due to the bad construction. Just a small rand of mine, do you think the same? Or do you like this movement? I think that will be an interesting discussion.
