Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

I renamed PuTTY.exe, which was causing it to not be recognized as a terminal window. Unfortunately, Im seeing much of the same issues when attempting to use vim with NVDA + PuTTY as I saw with Secure CRT. Im now downloading vinux and installing it on a VM, and am hoping that itll be more usable with speakup.

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

Ur, this is really odd. Im not sure why, but I used the vimtutor command on an impulse to look at the tutorial. I was able to edit that tutorial file, following the instructions - it was really usable. Im not sure why editing this vimtutor file is much more accessible than trying to edit a newly created file. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

Update: after following the vimtutor tutorial and setting up default settings in the process, all the weird problems I was having with screen reader usage over SSH suddenly disappeared. I wonder which of the settings caused me so much grief.

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

I was mistaken about having to use the windows version of VIM; Ill soon need to use VIM on my schools linux server by using SSH. However, im having trouble with moving about and positioning my cursor when in the document itself. E.G when pressing the arrow keys, jaws doesnt seem to be able to properly read what line or character my cursors focus is on. Does anyone have any idea of whether Im doing something wrong, or whether I need to use a client/screen reader combination that works better? Ive tried using Secure CRT with jaws scripts and OpenSSH for windows. Fastfinge suggested using NVDA; i know some people have success with using it with PuTTY but it doesnt speak incoming text or echo typed characters for me at all.

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

For the most part, PUTTY is your best bet, and you will have alot of the same problems. You can always do a say line to get your location. Of cource, this is assuming I remembering right.

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

NVDA + 5 toggles reporting of dynamic changes. You might see if thats disabled and affecting the announcement of incoming text and echoed characters.I have had it disabled before and it stopped incoming text from being read in a normal command prompt so it might be related here.I used to use NVDA with putty a lot, its not perfect, but it did generally read incoming text. I havent used it with vim though.

the VIM text editor with screen readers

HiDoes anyone have experience on how I can use the VIM text editor with screen readers on windows? Ill require it for university coursework. There are some weird issues that I am not sure I can work around, such as the focus for some reason being stuck on certain lines when I use the arrow keys to navigate around in a document with NVDA and jaws.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176192#p176192

Re: the VIM text editor with screen readers

VIM is even available on windows? If I SSH into a Linux box and fiddle, things seem to mostly work. So maybe just do that? I believe freeshell.org has VIM, if you dont want to make a Linux server just for text editing. The only troubles you will have are that if you hold down the down arrow, intending to skip a bunch quickly, your screen will be lagged thanks to the fact that SSH is remote, and NVDA will lose the cursor, and the world will be confusion. Just lift your hands off the keyboard for 2 seconds, take a deep breath, and by then your screen will be caught up, and the world will be right with itself once more.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176215#p176215
