Re: why rare stuff disappears from the internet

Hi.I've collected a huge tun of Hary Potter fan fiction and will continue to collect it in.I have all the audiobooks, films, and music too and will continue to collect what I can.I have a huge tun of BBC horror audio dramas, doctor who stuff, a tun of audiobooks I don't read, and other stuff. Why? Just in case I need them in the future. If we all collect our own personal items, we will all have rare items in the end.I can't really imagine it but say 20 or even 40 years down the line, kids aren't going to know what Harry Potter is and it will fade away; at least the movies and books will.I doubt the fan fiction will but I collect it anyway.

We're also missing Smart-hal I just realized. The way Dolphin did demos never really allowed for much preservation since you ahd to fill out that god-awful form.

Re: why rare stuff disappears from the internet

I love collecting especially rare items that can't be found on the internet. Like some chiptune albums in there orijinal format like nsf and GBS and MGB and such

Re: why rare stuff disappears from the internet

One thing that has since become harder to find are the Mobile Speak-related files. I don't have all the voice installers but I just went to go look for them and they are now reporting broken links on their download server.I have the Road Runner stuff on diskette, hough am glad to have found it available on Ostrich Software's main site in the wayback machine after that fact. One of the things i am missing is Nuance Talks for Windows Mobile, which was around for a short while.

Re: why rare stuff disappears from the internet

The reason rare stuff disappears so easily is because we put such rare stuff on one server and then that one server dies and then the rare stuff is gone. it's like putting a bunch of rare artefacts  on a speedboat that we want to carry through a thunderstorm. One day the speedboat gonna crash and the rare artefacts are gone, all at the bottom of the ocean. This is also what pretty much happened to the library of Alexandria or pretty much any library that ever got burned. Before the printing press there was one single copy of anything and we put it all in one place. Then one day some kreten decides to burn it and boom, it's all gone. Sad really.

Re: why rare stuff disappears from the internet

One of the things I appreciate, though it is not exactly a rare thing, are the talking VM's. In a way, it is rare, because it contains rare screen readers and is just usable right out of the box. So in order to get up and playing with old windows versions, it's very easy thanks to you.

why rare stuff disappears from the internet

Hi,TLDR, I tend to collect things before they disappear from their original source, and this makes me appreciate my own work much more.I have been thinking about how far I'v come in collecting TTS voices and such things, and I tried to find my original sources even though I didn't really need to.I first went to ftp.scansoft.com where I got  the LH evaluators, but that sight is no more.I then went to Dolphin's sight and tried searching for the files I used to put together my orpheus.iso file, but it seems those files have disappeared.I then tried to find some of my sources I used to put together my Willow Pond audio software iso, but those sights are very hard to find or they disappeared altogether. It seems my sight is the only sight that still hosts the SAPI4 SDK, so nv access got it from my sight. If I wasn't hosting that, sapi4 may have been broken in NVDA 2019.3 and later.I am not complaining about all of this since I already have the stuff that I want, but if I didn't get this stuff when it was still online, I would of had no luck.No-one else would even think of collecting such rare stuff, so I am happy I am doing the things that no-one else bothers to do.Also, some people are referencing some of my installers. For example, the Microsoft Sam and his fellow TTS voices wiki states that you have to get LH Michael and Michelle sapi5 from my sight. I am happy many people recognize my work.I am curious if anyone else on hear has examples of rarities they found before the sight disappeared.
