[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB2 internal 3.3v PS
It in my thread!!! http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17284 I initially took a different approach and lifted the +Vcc leg on the 74HCU04 and connected 3.3v directly to it from a small super regulator. I derived the input supply from elsewhere on the board. Unfortunately the lifted leg did not survive, neither did the one on the replacement 74HCU04 that I put in, fortunately the minimum buy quantity from my supplier was 20 so I have 19 more to go (if the SB2 PCB will survive that long! I did get sound out of the second 74HCU04 but not for long enough to do any comparisons! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Replay Gain and Clipping/Compression
Jim Wrote: I don't like the fact it's webpage still says a Propsed Standard but anyhow if it's ReplayGain is set to a value that clips then the Squeezebox would be a pretty poor implementation of ReplayGain if it didn't clip like it was told too. http://www.hydrogenaudio.org is the place to go for questions like this. When you add ReplayGain tags to a file, you should get values for the existing peak level as well as the suggested level adjustment. The playback device can (should?) figure out if applying the full suggested gain will then cause clipping, and back off the gain accordingly. Example: Foobar2000 has an option for this. There is no reason why the Squeezebox could not also have this option. (I don't know if it does; I don't use ReplayGain on my SB2 - haven't even loaded up a recent enough firmware to check it out). -- cliveb cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17960 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 6moons.com Commentary on PC-Audio
6moons.com has a superb commentary (first in a series) on the rapid evolution towards PC-audio. It features the Squeezebox 3, as well as other competing products. As a respected high-end site, I believe this article will convince many audiophile naysayers to seriously rethink their views on streaming digital audio... http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/harddrive/harddrive.html -- sleepysurf squeezebox2 (with elpac wm075-1950-760 linear psu) direct to amp using slimserver preamp vol control, 300gb buffalo linkstation (remote flac audio file storage), sunfire cinema grand 200 ~five (vertically bi-amped) driving martin-logan aerius i's, blue jeans cables. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Unit mods or external dac?
Please note the sharper s/pdif edges may increase EMI output - they're filtered for a reason. If you want them sharper just jump across L5. I wouldn't recommend this because it doesn't reduce jitter, nor would I expect it to improve any DAC's ability to lock onto the signal. It just increases the energy at odd harmonics of fs*64 which isn't a worthy goal unless you're having DAC locking problems. In this case square enough to get a clean phase lock at the receiver is ideal. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17805 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Will an outboard dac be an improvment over my Anthem AVM20
I just bought a California Audio Labs Alpha Dac. I figured I liked my CAL Aria so much that the Alpha might be the way to go, if not I can resell it for my cost. I also bought a Elpac PS at present I can't tell the difference but I haven't tried to critically compare. -- Kenr Kenr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1134 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17286 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC
highdudgeon Wrote: I'm wondering how many people have done careful listening comparing the Squeezebox with and without a high-end external DAC? IE, is there much benefit to be gained? Little? None at all? I couldn't hear any difference at all between the Squeezebox straight-up and running through a Benchmark DAC-1, and ended up returning the DAC-1. That was on my main system, Parasound amplification to Paradigm Studio 100 speakers. I _think_ that I can tell a difference between it straight-up and running through the HeadRoom Micro DAC, but I wouldn't swear to that; I didn't do anything like a rigorous comparison, because I knew that I was keeping the Micro DAC no matter what (it has a USB input, and it's way way better than the sound card in my computer, so I use it to listen to music when at the computer) and didn't end up keeping it hooked up to the SB. Associated equipment on that was HeadRoom's Micro Amp driving HD-650 headphones. It's possible that my speaker system isn't good enough to reveal differences between the built-in and an external DAC, so if you've got a system that you've spent $20K on, you'll probably want to try it out anyway. But for the most part, I expect that differences between competent modern DACs are going to be very very subtle. At the very least, if you decide to try a DAC out, make sure you can return it. -- mkozlows mkozlows's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17948 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
