[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC
Sorry, but none have made it down under yet. Shipping costs on 8kg don't help, but it's probably something people have to hear for themselves first. So far, everyone that has, has ordered one. There's one in a CSD2/NAC552/NAP500/DBL system which the owner is very pleased with. I don't know how much use the CDS2 gets these days! It's interesting the number of 'audiophiles' who can't quite get their head round the fact that they won't need a CDP too - but what's the point when the SB2+ is better AND more convienent? Briks work quite well in the summer I find - open all the doors and windows and listen in the garden. radish Wrote: An easy mistake to make if you are not involved in the field. Not knowing everything there is to know about computers is fine, we're all experts in our own fields. But seeing as SlimServer/Squeezebox is basically just a computer all the way up to the DAC or SPDIF driver, I really wish some people would start trusting those of us who do know about this stuff :) I dont think anyone should be trusting some of the comments here at all! All this talk about zip files and bit for bit exact copies etc is all true, but its just a shame that most people seem to forget that you dont listen to bits, you listen to music. SB doesnt even output 'bits' out of its digital output - its a signal, not a perfect square wave. SPDIF is not perfect. How audible this is depends on your ears and your equipment. I would put money on people not being able to hear the difference between wav and flac on an SB, but that doesnt mean that there isnt a difference (or at least couldnt be) Having said that, I use flac, i find the main advantages over wav are the file size and the tagging. File size is not necessarily that important depending on your storage and network - but the tagging is useful, especially when it comes to compilations that need more info that you can easily represent with the path/file name. -- martintyler martintyler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2385 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21700 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Calling all audiophiles - Uncompressed or lossless?
Finally some sanity! FLAC vs WAV are mathematically identical and neither the compression or decompression processes introduce error of any sort. If this wasn't true of any lossless compression regime, we'd all know about it - and how. LL compression is used on the wire to minimise bandwidth utilisation. If it wasn't really, always, lossless every networked computer in the world would be spewing out garbage all of the time (I know some might believe that the Internet is in fact doing this...). If ZIP files didn't unzip perfectly we'd all know about it - the world would be in uproar. FLAC, ZIP etc just work in the same way that your calculator always ALWAYS says that 2+2 = 4. With server-side FLAC decompression (and accurate rips in the first place), the only things that really count towards audible reproduction quality are the DAC onwards parts of the a chain. This assumes you buy into the SB-side FLAC decode can be heard to be worse than server-side argument - which I most certainly don't. In fact, there are very good arguments that SB+reclocking DAC should sound better than any spinning disc transport, since there is a much greater chance of random timing and reading errors in real-time, one shot reading of small pits on a wobbly rotating disc with a wobbling laser and some dubious interpolation algorithms to cover problems. -- Phil Leigh Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21700 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I got no response in one of the other forums, so I will try here. Hello I have a new install of slimserver and, by-in-large, everthing is working as expected and it is great software ! My local collection of music files is made up of both .mp3 and .ogg files. Some of the best I have is saved at a nominal 320 kbps .ogg files. As I understand my setup, lame is being used to convert this file to a .mp3 stream on-the-fly as it is being served. I can change it to a lower bit rate, for example, 128 kbps, for better streaming over the internet. I can also control the lame setting from 0 (slowest, best quality) to 9 (fastest, lowest quality). The problem is that when I play the served files locally, I get just noise ! However, if I play .mp3 files that need no conversion, I get good sound. I suspect slow processor as a possible cause. My machine is a 1 GHz AMD Athlon. I am running Linux/Ubuntu/Breezy. And the McIntosh also interfaces with CD changers - so one can effortlessly copy multiple CDs at a time into FLAC. I'm not familiar with the software its using but I doubt its as good as EAC for making perfect rips. Average consumers want the CDs to rip as fast as possible. You only rip once but you play it many times so the speed of the rip is not as important as an error-free rip. If its ripping in 6-7 minutes I doubt its doing the equivalent of a secure mode rip in EAC. I prefer open systems myself to ensure the highest quality possible even if the learning curve is steeper. It does cause me to wonder about the market for this unit as the average consumer won't pay the premium for a McIntosh and audiophile consumers are more savvy about how to create high quality rips (I assume) and would prefer an open storage solution rather than being constrained by the included hard drive capacity. Not to mention the fact that the same issues (or non-issues) exist whether FLAC or WAV is being played, and in any device manipulating digital data - such as a CDP. If there _is_ a risk of pre-DAC data corruption, it exists equally in every transport. It does seem to be true that the SB does a better job with this than all but very expensive CD transports. dmsmit1 Wrote: I recently bought an SB3. It is connected to an Adcom stereo preamp, then to a Parasound amp. The sound is very good. I expect it would be even better with the SB3 going directly to the amp, but noticed a post about a bug that can result in the SB3 sending full scale output, which could possibly blow the amp or the speakers (especially if the signal is clipped either from the SB3 or from the amp). The Slimdevices CEO even warned that connecting directly to the amp is not recommended. Is that bug/issue still a concern? Dmsmit1 I am thinking of doing exactly the same thing, connecting the analog output directly into a power amp! Your message did make me worry a little bit, are you saying that even if we play the SB3 at low volume, signal clipping will still cause the SB3 to send full output into the amp? Can you point me to the message where this bug is being discussed? Sorry I wasn't able to help you instead I'm asking for help! I'm an absolute newbie in this. I recently bought the A23, after 22+ years using a Haffler 220. Very nice sound. The A23 has adjustable input levels - knobs on the back, separate for left and right, so not useful as volume controls (use the Adcom for that). Need an accurate meter if you want to ensure L/R balance. Turning down the input on the A23 may provide enough protection from a malfunctioning SB3 connected directly to it, the problem is how to determine the right setting on the amp. If too low, then the full potential of the amp will not be realized, when desired. If too high, the amp or more likely the speakers (tweeters) could be damaged. -- dmsmit1 dmsmit1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

search for white noise or white noise death in the general forum. I think it can still happen in rare cases, and some kind of attenuator should be used. -Dan -- dwc dwc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1892 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
