Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Electrostatic speakers and.... a microwave

IMHO, given sufficient breathing room, bipolar speakers of this type of design (electrostatic, electromagnetic) are hard to beat! I can't tell you specifically how to use the software, but it's not usually too difficult. Load the file, and go look for an effects/equalization pull down menu. Many people persist in thinking that data is read off a CD like a record, where timing matters, but it doesn't work that way. Data is read off in a block, with left and right channels happening sequentially. They're processed through the error detection/correction circuitry, where the data is filled into a table, and check sums are calculated both vertically and horizontally. Once the data has been checked for errors (and corrected if required), it's then loaded into a FIFO buffer, and clocked out to oversampling filter and DAC. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Measuring bit-perfectness.
For ripping, I'd suggest you go with EAC or dbPowerAmp. These (and probably others) are nice in that they will compare checksum data of your rip against an online database (AccurateRip) of other users rips. If your rips 100% match other users rips, you can be fairly certain you've got it right! If you want to compare rippers that don't support AccurateRip, your back to AudioDiffMaker, as previously suggested. As for comparing media players, the previously mentioned method of playing an HDCD to a DAC which indicates that encoding will tell you if something is going wrong. If your not aware of how HDCD works, it encodes a control signal into the dithered noise floor of a cd. If there's been any alteration of the bits, the control signal will be lost, and the light on your DAC won't turn on. -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71781 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SPDIF is evil
Recognizing that SP/DIF is less than ideal, the next step is obvious, propose an implement a new standard. The problem with this, is the vast majority of the marketplace see's nothing wrong with SP/DIF, and isn't going to pay anything more for it In fact, in addition to the separate word clock, there has been another standard proposed, and implemented by some manufactures: the I2S interface (I squared S). This derives from another Sony/Philips spec, a buss intended for IC to IC communication inside a CD player. The name is an abbreviation of Inter-IC Sound buss. The original version (championed by Audio Alchemy) used a DIN connector to handle the extra pins required. Not the best connector, as it isn't a controlled impedance connection, but at least it did split the data and clocks. Ultra Analog developed an improved version of this interface dubbed I2S enhanced, which extended the spec to allow for the clock to be sourced from either the DAC or Transport. It used a 13W3 connector, which is an odd looking beast used by high end graphics terminals. Externally, it looks like a DB25 but is interesting in that it has 3 75ohm coaxial cable connections along with 5 twisted pairs. Wadia (who ultimately bought out Ultra Analog) and Sonic Frontiers had products which made use of this interface. The point of all of this, is that better interfaces have been proposed, implemented, marketed, and failed Sad to say, but I think we're stuck with SP/DIF... -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71464 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Subwoofers from a high-end perspective?
I rather think it's the later, if you haven't experimented with sub's in a high end system, you might not appreciate what they can do. I mentioned earlier, that I like what a satalite/subwoofer system can do. In my living room right now, I've got a pair of BW 705's with a 750 sub. To my ears, this setup sounded better than a pair of the larger floor standers in the same series. The smaller sattelites image better, but suffer when pushed loud or with bass heavy music. Strip the low bass off, and let the sub handle it, and the system has both great dynamics and imaging. I took a quick look at the article you mentioned, and realized I had read it several years ago, under the authors original Secrets title. He makes some good points, and, also some factual errors, but in general, I agree with most of what he says. Konut suggested a higher order crossover between the mains and sub, and while I agree, I only go half as far, and prefer a second order filter. My reason for this, is that I agree with the underlying rational with the THX spec using a second order filter. If you take a speaker with a second order roll off (ie an acoustic suspension or sealed box, hopefully with a butterworth alignment), and combine it with a second order electrical filter (again butterworth), then you achieve an effective 4th order Linkwitz Riley filter! Your sub then uses a forth order LR filter, and you've got a reasonably good shot at not having frequency response problems in the cross-over region. By now, you may have started to grasp the biggest issue with subs in high end systems. It's not entirely plug and play, and there's plenty of room for error. Good speaker designers spend a ton of time measuring, listening, thinking, adjusting speakers to get them sounding the way they want. Properly integrating a sub with speaker is the same. Do your homework, and or get lucky, and it can sound great. Get it wrong, and it can sound like that Civic that was beside you at the red light the other day... Sorry for being slow responding The SPDIF protocol specification does specify sample rates, but it depends on -which- version of the spec you are referencing, as it's been revised upwards in several steps! The GrandDaddy (IEC958) specified 48k as the max, while the latest version IEC60958rev3 allows up to 768k(!) and also allows for IEC61937 data streams, for multi channel, DSD and MP3. As for units that support higher rates, there are PC sound cards, like the M-audio Audiophile 192 which does 192 on SPDIF, or the Benchmark DAC1 which will play back data rates up to 195k. There are others as well, you just have to search them out... Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/192 digital output?
Stratmangler;435090 Wrote: If Transporter could handle 24/192 files it would only be able to utilise its' built in DACs to process the stream - as soon as you try to take the conversion process offboard you are limited to 24/96. I'm not sure why you say this? While not common, there are units which do 24/192 over SPDIF. For a long time, the format spec set an upper limit at 24/96, but this is no longer the case. I can't find the link right now, but even higher sample rates are supported under the current specification. -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64781 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I must admit, I've never looked that closely at the fundamentals of the design approaches, but I would have thought that planar magnetic speakers, like the Maggies, would require lots of current, but planar electrostatics, like the Quads would prefer lots of voltage Certainly, that was one of the arguments for the dedicated tube amps offered by Acoustat, and others. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mirage Speaker, replacment woofer
Two counter questions: What type of surround do they use? Foam or Rubber? How old are the drivers? Foam surrounds break down with age, if the woofers are getting on in years, it might be worthwhile to replace them all. If they're relatively new, or use rubber surrounds, then maybe not... -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64396 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

bhaagensen;428020 Wrote: But the sampling rate of the DXD tracks is just ridiculous. There is no reason to sample at 352. Almost all the arguments for using, say, 24/96 over 16/44 are no longer valid in the case of 24/352 over 24/96. Moreover Lavry's paper on digital sampling makes it clear that its not technically possible to utilise all bits and samples in 24/352. Sample at 352 and loose bit-precision. Sorry, but can you provide a link to the Lavry paper? I can't imagine why it's not technically possible to utilize all the data. It may not be worthwhile, or economically challenging, but I'm not aware of any reason why it's not technically possible FWIW, I agree that the sampling rates of the DXD tracks are insane, but if the hardware is available, why not use it in the recording/mastering phases of production? The only downside of the higher precession is higher cost Cheers, Dave -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63908 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

If you want to argue that you can't achieve 96, let alone 144, or that you don't need 96 (let alone 144), that's another story, but the 6dB/bit SNR improvement applies equally to 8 bit recordings, 16 bit recordings, 24 bit recordings, etc etc etc. -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63131 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

There are no arguments from the videophile or man-on-the-street about whether there's a perceivable difference in quality between SD and HD. I'm not so sure about that... The -Displays- have moved from SD to HD quickly, but mostly because the wide screen format is so obviously different. I'm not sure that Blu ray player sales have surpassed regular DVD players yet, (certainly not if you exclude the Sony Playstation as a player). When I walk into a video store, normal DVD's outnumber Blu ray discs by thousands to one type ratio's, and I do hear a lot of comments that DVD is perfectly good. -- DCtoDaylight Audiophile wish list: Zero Distortion, Infinite Signal to Noise Ratio, and a Bandwidth from DC to Daylight DCtoDaylight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62848 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
