For the record, Quads, like my Martin Logan's, are electrostatic
designs.
IMHO, given sufficient breathing room, bipolar speakers of this type of
design (electrostatic, electromagnetic) are hard to beat!
On the microwave front, they shouldn't be leaking much energy, there are
strict safety requirements on that front. I would suspect polluted
power might be the issue you're having.
Enjoy and cheers! Dave

It depends a bit on your setup though... Like yourself, I have an early
release transporter, and didn't use the knob at all for a long time.
However, in my current rack layout, it's much higher, just below the
pre-amp, and I find myself using it more and more. My wife will stand 2
feet in front of it and use the remote, but I just twist the knob,
click, twist, click go

It's an ergonomics thing. When it was 20 inches off the floor, in a low
rack, it didn't get used. Right now, it's at about a 4ft height,
comfortable to use, so I use it!

While this would work, it's not a solution I would recommend, for two
reasons. First off, most transformers exhibit some level of distortion
and frequency response issues. They are often, not as perfect as some
would have you believe. Secondly, I'm a big believer in simple signal
paths, and if I'm not mistaken, the TP's internal dac is balanced, then
converted to single ended, then add the transformer to go back to
balanced, it just seems like two avoidable conversions.

One of my Transporters blew the switching supply for the display's, but
I've never had an issue with the analog supplies. While it's certainly
possible for a transformer to fail, in my tech experience, it's much
more common to be something else. As iPhone suggests, if you've no
experience troubleshooting and fixing gear, let someone else have a
look. The fact that the transformer is hot could easily be something
shorted on it's output, and only be a symptom, not a cause.
Personally, I would never order a transformer on suspicion only...

I run a satellite/sub type system, with BW 705's. I find that taking
the lowest octaves off the small woofers beneficial, while the sub also
adds weight that the 705's don't have by themselves. It did take me a
while to get the system to integrate properly though. I found the
usual sub controls (corner freq, phase, level) weren't enough to dial
it in. I needed to add some eq to kill a rather nasty peak in the
frequency response. Until I did that, the low end was always either
boomy or thin, depending on how I had the level set, and the source

equally up to the task. It talks about adjusting bass and treble
levels with the equalizer audio effect, as well as batch processing. I
can't tell you specifically how to use the software, but it's not
usually too difficult. Load the file, and go look for an
effects/equalization pull down menu. There will often be some
options, ranging from basic tone controls to graphic eq's, and
parametric equalizers. You'll have to play around for a while, like
you did with your big system, 'till you get things sounding as you
like. As long as you're careful to never save your modified file over
your original source file, you can make dozens of copies while you
decide what settings you like best.

You mention recording as well, I had thought you were dealing with
downloaded MP3's, but maybe it's both. When you are recording, what's
your source? Is it a tape deck plugged into your computers sound card?

there's a lot more QA required!

If you go with the matching Focal CMS sub, it has connections for the
satellites built in. You would run the TP balanced L and R to the sub,
then balanced from the sub to the satellite. I haven't heard these
specific Focal's, but the models I have heard sound very good. This
looks like it could be a very good sounding setup, with a good range of
fine tweaking adjustments.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter setup with 2.1

2010-03-28 Thread DCtoDaylight

There are times when matching speakers can be a good idea, for example
fronts and rears in a surround setup. Having all four from the same
maker, helps ensure their voicing is similar, and that's generally
good. For sub-woofers, the key is the ability to integrate. In that
regard, units that are designed to work together have a leg up, but if
both products have a reasonable amount of flexibility, you can dial
them in. In that regard, the Focal monitors are very helpful, having
an included hi-pass filter.

I'd go with the connections that Curt suggested, and do some
experimentation. I would think it's very possible tune this up to a
very good sounding setup.

One possible work around for the compiler issue is student licenses.
Many companies offer those for free, for the duration of a course of

Sadly, I expect they would take a dim view on someone working on

It would certainly be more work, but not impossible. The TP has at
least three primary power supplies, the 5 volt switching supply for the
front panel, and the two toroidal transformer driven supplies for the
analog and DAC. It would be a lot more work because you would have to
remove those, rather than simply plug in an external box like an SB3

Yes, FLAC compression levels of 7-8 or above have been found to cause
problems. The problems manifest themselves as distortion, or sometimes
drop outs. Two things to keep in mind, this only affects high bit rate
recordings (24/96, 24/88), lower rates play fine. I believe it also
affects some material more than others. Some sort of interaction
between the compression algorithm, and the material it's trying to
compress.

Sorry but to be clear, are you saying you can't play 24/96 files on

are they in? If flac, the problem may be that they were encoded with
too high a level of compression. The TP hardware is a bit marginal for
24/96 and can't deal highly compressed files. You can either re-encode
with a lower level of compression, or I think someone posted a setting
to do this on the fly, if you search the archives.
As for 88.2 KHz files, in the original firmware releases, they wouldn't
play. This ability was added in later releases.

true about -ethernet- in general, to wifi in specific. There is
absolutely no difference, in terms of jitter, clock, or bit perfectness,
between a wired or wireless implementation. In both cases, the clock is
not transmitted with the data, it's totally internal to the TP, so the
data transmission method cannot impact the jitter. In both cases, the
data transmitted is exactly the same, so there cannot be any difference
in volume level.

As JS say's, it's possible that having the wifi card in your TP active
is somehow affecting some other component in your rig... But then the
problem is some components sensitivity to RF, and not a difference
between wired and wireless per se.

Yes, the exact timing of the pit-land transitions may vary, but it's
totally irrelevant. Many people persist in thinking that data is read
off a CD like a record, where timing matters, but it doesn't work that
way. Data is read off in a block, with left and right channels
happening sequentially. They're processed through the error
detection/correction circuitry, where the data is filled into a table,
and check sums are calculated both vertically and horizontally. Once
the data has been checked for errors (and corrected if required), it's
then loaded into a FIFO buffer, and clocked out to oversampling filter
and DAC. The data coming off the disc, and that being sent to the DAC
are totally isolated by asynchronous interfaces. Jitter on the disc
can't make it to the outside world, until it's large enough to be
causing uncorrectable bit errors

inconceivable that there should be some such effect---where I was
assuming, of course, that jitter is audible, etc.

I agree it's conceivable, but have no idea if the jitter would be data
correlated, or not (which affects it's audibility).

As for measuring it, it would be interesting to measure at the output
of the FPGA, and again at the output of the re-timing flop. Both
measurements would be difficult though, as attaching the scope probes to
these points will affect their loading, often increasing the noise
jitter. I work with guy's who design and build telecom fibre optic
gear, measuring some of this stuff is really tough...

Not necessarily... it depends on how much data is lost. A period of

sounding, without obviously being dropped samples.

Some very early CD players had error lights on them, which flashed when
an uncorrectable error was detected. This feature was discarded almost
immediately, as there were too many customer complaints that the error
light was always flashing! Ignorance is bliss! I don't believe modern
CD players suffer nearly as much from this, but it would be fairly easy
to test. Record the spdif stream a few times, and run them through
Audio Diff Maker. You could compare the original CD with ripped and
burned copies on different media, or compare different CD players this

the higher the level of compression, the higher the amount of work

Personally, I've given up on the Transporter with 24/96 flac files. I

As Sean alluded to, earlier in this thread, it has been a problem with
some material, some levels of compression, and some firmware versions.
To me, it appears that the hardware is a bit marginal.

As my 24/96 files account for less than 2% of my total music
collection, the extra space required is trivial, so I've just decided to
live with the short coming.

On the other hand, given that the Touch is also supposed to handle
24/96, I'm hoping that more attention to this shortfall will be
made.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Measuring bit-perfectness.

2009-11-24 Thread DCtoDaylight

For ripping, I'd suggest you go with EAC or dbPowerAmp. These (and
probably others) are nice in that they will compare checksum data of
your rip against an online database (AccurateRip) of other users rips.
If your rips 100% match other users rips, you can be fairly certain
you've got it right! If you want to compare rippers that don't support
AccurateRip, your back to AudioDiffMaker, as previously suggested.

As for comparing media players, the previously mentioned method of
playing an HDCD to a DAC which indicates that encoding will tell you if
something is going wrong. If your not aware of how HDCD works, it
encodes a control signal into the dithered noise floor of a cd. If
there's been any alteration of the bits, the control signal will be
lost, and the light on your DAC won't turn on.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SPDIF is evil

2009-11-16 Thread DCtoDaylight

Recognizing that SP/DIF is less than ideal, the next step is obvious,
propose an implement a new standard. The problem with this, is the vast
majority of the marketplace see's nothing wrong with SP/DIF, and isn't
going to pay anything more for it

In fact, in addition to the separate word clock, there has been another
standard proposed, and implemented by some manufactures: the I2S
interface (I squared S). This derives from another Sony/Philips spec, a
buss intended for IC to IC communication inside a CD player. The name
is an abbreviation of Inter-IC Sound buss.

The original version (championed by Audio Alchemy) used a DIN connector
to handle the extra pins required. Not the best connector, as it isn't
a controlled impedance connection, but at least it did split the data
and clocks. Ultra Analog developed an improved version of this
interface dubbed I2S enhanced, which extended the spec to allow for the
clock to be sourced from either the DAC or Transport. It used a 13W3
connector, which is an odd looking beast used by high end graphics
terminals. Externally, it looks like a DB25 but is interesting in that
it has 3 75ohm coaxial cable connections along with 5 twisted pairs.
Wadia (who ultimately bought out Ultra Analog) and Sonic Frontiers had
products which made use of this interface.

The point of all of this, is that better interfaces have been proposed,
implemented, marketed, and failed Sad to say, but I think we're
stuck with SP/DIF...

I've found a fair number of music/concert dvd's have a 24/48 PCM stereo
soundtrack, which can be ripped fairly easily. So that's one source of
higher res content.

SPDIF is a format that's evolved over the years, but just about any
current product will pass 24/48 without problem. Better hardware will
to 24/96, and the best will do 24/192 but that's pretty rare in my
experience. The Duet is hardware limited to 24/48, so you'll always be
down-sampled to that limit.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Subwoofers from a high-end perspective?

2009-08-26 Thread DCtoDaylight

I rather think it's the later, if you haven't experimented with sub's in
a high end system, you might not appreciate what they can do. I
mentioned earlier, that I like what a satalite/subwoofer system can do.
In my living room right now, I've got a pair of BW 705's with a 750
sub. To my ears, this setup sounded better than a pair of the larger
floor standers in the same series. The smaller sattelites image better,
but suffer when pushed loud or with bass heavy music. Strip the low bass
off, and let the sub handle it, and the system has both great dynamics
and imaging.

I took a quick look at the article you mentioned, and realized I had
read it several years ago, under the authors original Secrets title.
He makes some good points, and, also some factual errors, but in
general, I agree with most of what he says.

Konut suggested a higher order crossover between the mains and sub, and
while I agree, I only go half as far, and prefer a second order filter.
My reason for this, is that I agree with the underlying rational with
the THX spec using a second order filter. If you take a speaker with a
second order roll off (ie an acoustic suspension or sealed box,
hopefully with a butterworth alignment), and combine it with a second
order electrical filter (again butterworth), then you achieve an
effective 4th order Linkwitz Riley filter! Your sub then uses a forth
order LR filter, and you've got a reasonably good shot at not having
frequency response problems in the cross-over region.

By now, you may have started to grasp the biggest issue with subs in
high end systems. It's not entirely plug and play, and there's plenty
of room for error. Good speaker designers spend a ton of time
measuring, listening, thinking, adjusting speakers to get them sounding
the way they want. Properly integrating a sub with speaker is the same.
Do your homework, and or get lucky, and it can sound great. Get it
wrong, and it can sound like that Civic that was beside you at the red
light the other day...

Cheers, and good listening!Dave

pass slightly different information along in the status bits, mostly

Worse, many glass fiber cables have poorly fitting terminations which
also causes problems. I bought glass fiber cable to experiment with,
and when it arrived I discovered it has a round ferule on the end, not
the proper D shaped toslink end. It doesn't mate well with the
connectors, and actually causes total signal loss if it isn't held
pretty much straight into the connector.

In my experience, glass toslink cables are best -avoided- and I

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/192 digital output?

2009-06-27 Thread DCtoDaylight

Sorry for being slow responding

The SPDIF protocol specification does specify sample rates, but it
depends on -which- version of the spec you are referencing, as it's been
revised upwards in several steps!
The GrandDaddy (IEC958) specified 48k as the max, while the latest
version IEC60958rev3 allows up to 768k(!) and also allows for IEC61937
data streams, for multi channel, DSD and MP3.

As for units that support higher rates, there are PC sound cards, like
the M-audio Audiophile 192 which does 192 on SPDIF, or the Benchmark
DAC1 which will play back data rates up to 195k. There are others as
well, you just have to search them out...

Cheers, Dave
