Re: [aus-soaring] VHF license.jpg
Quite true Graham ! Reminds me of when we used to have to pay for a television receiver license (Gee showing my age !!) I guess our silent civil disobedience over the years has finally paid off by the removal of yet another mindless form of government taxation. So, hands up all those who had actually paid for a licence... [aus-soaring] On mindless rules
When I did my PPL theory course the instructor said, Every aviation rule has been paid for with human lives. Meaning that aviation rules are there as a result of dreadful lesson learnt from the past. In most cases I would agree EXCEPT for the rules governing the privileges of the private pilot. (Ie. the requirement of the private pilot to pay an equal share of the flight costs when taking friends for a flight.). These rules seem to me to be nothing more than bureaucracy to protect the commercial aviation sector. I have heard that the rules (CARs) that apply to private GA pilots with regard to taking passengers also apply to passenger rated glider pilots. I refer again to the requirement of the passenger rated glider pilot to pay an equal share of the flight costs when taking friends for a flight. This type of flying is clearly not commercial, charter or instructional, it is clearly private flying with a friend. ( Insurance applicable to private flying should apply to a passenger friend flight as well.) The obvious way around this is to qualify as a level 1 instructor, pay the $5 GFA fee, sign the form and take friends as TIFs. This doesn't help the passenger/friend rated only glider pilot however. Can anyone (perhaps a GFA person or Mike Cleaver from CASA if you are reading this) tell me; 1. If they do in fact apply to glider pilots. 2. What the rationale behind these rules is and why they should apply to a SPORT AVIATION such as gliding. Private flying of passenger friends where the passenger pays all of the flying cost and the pilot donates his/her time seems to me to be a fair spitting of costs. (Flying for reward should rightly be limited to AOC holders) 3. As I believe gliding is not exempt, why the GFA can not go in to bat for an exemption to these rules for gliding and sport aviation. Re: [aus-soaring] Weather photos - no gliding content
Wayne what's the real address of your web page Wayne Kiely wrote: Greetings all. Please excuse the lack of gliding content. I am sure some will be interested. I came across some old photos given to me by a relative who witnessed the Ash Wednesday front approach their property some 20 Km NE of Peterborough in SA. compos~1.jpg (170 kb) is the first chronologically speaking and consists of three landscape images stitched roughly together. It conveys the overall impression pretty well. ashwed~1.jpg (125 kb) is the second of the series and is a single portrait shot centred in about the middle of the above series. I am not sure of the exact timing, but this shot was taken almost immediately (only a minute or two) after the above series. ashwed~2 5.jpg (144 kb) is the final shot in the series and is back to a landscape image centred at about the same point as above but this time taken a few minutes (only a few!) later. Al shots are to approximate north. No retouching has been done whatsoever. Colours are as scanned from the photos. All shots were taken with the same camera on the same roll of film. Limitations in the originals are evident, but the results are rather awesome. Due to the file sizes the above are available at... www.riverland.net.au\~kiely+co Enjoy! Regards, Wayne PSWhen the front came through the Riverland later in the day, all street lights switched on and all external fluorescent lights appeared blue - even in photographs. -- * You are subscribed to the aus-soaring mailing list. * To Unsubscribe: send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] * with unsubscribe aus-soaring in the body of the message * or with help in the body of the message for more information. begin:vcard n:Moore;Reg tel;fax:08 84316437 tel;home:08 84316437 x-mozilla-html:FALSE org:Gliding Federation of Australia adr:;;608 Greenhill Rd.,;Burnside;South Australia;5066; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] title:Regional Technical Officer fn:Reg Moore end:vcard
