Richard H. Johnson of Dallas, Texas died in a glider crash near 
Midlothian, Texas today at approximately 12:30 central time. The 
soaring community has lost a true pioneer and a great friend. Our 
condolences go out to Alice, his wife, and the rest of Dick's family.

Dick has been my soaring hero since I read about his world distance 
record flight of 535 miles in the RJ5 in 1951. Even more impressive 
when I read about the modifications which turned the original 30:1 
glider into a better than 40:1 glider.

I was fortunate to meet and talk with him on a couple of occasions.
