Re: [Aus-soaring] CPL exams
I always recommended to my students they do it in the following order, not only from easiest to hardest but to use information you learn in one exam for another. Human Factors AGK Aerodynamics Met Nav Air Law Flight Planning Students generally find AGK and Aerodynamics harder than Met and Nav and sometimes best to leave till after Met and Nav but I find leaving these two later better prepares you for flight planning. Leave flight planning till last as you will have a greater understanding overall of what is required. Re: [Aus-soaring] CPL exams
Great post Sarah, I concur. My only addition to it would be to leave one easy one (for me, Hunan Factors) as a confidence exam. For example, I failed the same subject two times in a row. Disheartened, I did Human Factors next to get the confidence back up. I passed all exams from there on in. I used this same method in my ATPL's, though thankfully this time around I passed all first go it wasn't required. Re: [Aus-soaring] Southern starts (ie multiple starts)
G'day Macca, If I upgrade, I'll pROBABLY GO FOR THE ClearNav vario - been looking into it for a while now, it has some great features write-ups. Having said that, my primary vario will stay the B700. Made 50hrs with it, very impressive bit if kit. Looking forward to the inertial stuff Mike, think it'll help nicely with the bottom-to-top climb averages. Improvements seem to come out each six months but many of the earlier issues have been improved on (eg AATs and in particular how far to go into the last turnpoint) John Murray (Eastern Sailplane) has made his version of stick control panel and is worth a look at. Finally the CN Vario is out in demo form and I will be getting 2 units for trialing later next week. It has been a long wait which an Aussie called the CN Photoshop Vario I think the reason is than needle always seemed like it was just an add on. [Aus-soaring] Air Law
So long as it is in a CASA approved pilot's operating handbook (POH), seems to trump everything else...! Such as hand starting a Saratoga by oneself, relying upon the park brake to hold the a/c. I recall that Dr. Isabel won the court case because hand starting with park brake on was an approved procedure in the Saratoga POH. There was some suggestion that the park brake might have been faulty and it could not be proven that Dr. Isabel was negligent. See: (http://www.check-six.com/Crash_Sites/VH-KBZ-ShreddedSeminole.htm) Can anyone else remember more detail of this case? ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

[Aus-soaring] CPL exams summarised (may contain humour...)
Human Factors - Don't fly when tired and emotional or sick. Remember to listen to others, they might have something important to say AGK- If it has rotors, it is not a plane. Generally planes are found more often on the ground than in the sky. Aerodynamics - Planes need wings to fly well, how it works can lead to arguments between engineers and mathematicians. Met - If it is wet it is raining usually. If it is darker than normal it is cloudy or night-time. Nav- Press the goto button on your favourite GPS. The 1 in 60 rule is how often you get your navigation calculations correct. Air Law- Refer to the regs, remember to have a moisture absorbent mat for guide dogs on board. Crocodiles must be confined to a strong box if carried as cargo. Flight Planning- Go to NAIPS, get NOTAMS, weather. Plan flight. Go to flying school to discover instructor sick, plane grounded or weather worse than forecast so no flying! Good luck with the CPL exams you guys, I hear that the exams really sharpen you up!
