Re: Some questions from an awesome beginner

2013-10-30 Thread Gerald Klein
Tags in the awesome sense are basically 2 things, one you see them and can
use them as something similar to workspaces, 2 you can assign a tag to an
app for a tag/workspace it is not currently on and it will appear there
also, the fun thing about this is, that the app is not a seperate instance
but the same instance of that application which means that if it is a doc
then edits are in both places, if it is an app Music Player (dumb
example) it is in both places. This is great for having a reference
document that you need to use with other documents and you may have to edit
also, and you can have it on as many tags as you need.

Couldn't agree move. For me the gnome-sound-applet does the trick for
controlling the master pulseaudio volume, and everything else is done
 using
 pavucontrol.

gnome-sound-applet does not exist anymore. Using amixer sset (it is
beautiful to use the notification for that cf. https://github.com/kiike/**

 .

(Until now, I spent ~10 hours with awesome and has not finished yet!)

Well, I noticed several people are happy with that. But I am too
 habituated
to have some applications at fixed size and at fixed locations, and
 minimise
them when I do not need them.

Perhaps you are among those people who would never adopt to tiling,
but honestly speaking, I doubt it.
Instead of minimizing applications, just switch to a fresh tag...

Yeah, that might take a little getting used to. I also starting using
mostly two or three tags like I did with workspaces under gnome. But now I
always have 10-15 tags open, each with it's specific set of applications.

I do not really understand how to use tags. My work flow involves the use
of emacs, always open at left, with agenda and various post-it notes
(random thoughts), thunderbird at the left half of the screen (minimised
except when reading e-mail), firefox at the right half, and two terminals
at bottom left and right, always opened. All these apps do not change
position. From terminals I start applications (pdf viewer etc.) which
 float anywhere on the screen.

When I have not done with an application (read half of a pdf doc for ex.)
and have to swith to other things, I minimise it. Thus, I have it always
in the eyes, as if it were in the TODO list.

I have never more than ~10 windows opened, since it becomes too complex to
manage for me; I prefer working on 1-3 things at a time.

So what the tags can improve in this work flow? (The only thing I see to
optimise is that often I open/minimise thunderbird to check messages or
 start an e-mail.)

Well, I still use gnome-terminal, so the settings are the same as in
 gnome.
Still, in gnome there was a bell, now there is not. And terminal
 bell is
 checked on in terminal settings.

Hmm, a bit strange... Perhaps Gnome configured sound system in some
 way at start?
Do you have any sounds at all? I guess you might need to take a llok
 at alsa/pulseaudio/whatever else is there...

I'd guess it's some kind of xbelld thing within gnome.

Have not yet found a solution for that.

Opening Apps On Screens

2013-07-31 Thread Gerald Klein
Hi, I have a little problem, I load MPlayer into screen 2 tag 1, now when I
start VMWare (vmplayer) it loads into screen 2 tag 1,

Not earth shattering problem but kind of annoying because I load multiple
vm's at once and they all head for that tag. I tested it by changing the
rule to put MPlayer into another screen and tag and that's where vmware
ended up.

The classes for the windows are similar but not the same and it seems like
the matching is using a contains and not an equals, is there a way to make
this work right?

Vmplayer and vmplayer

MPlayer and mplayer

I am using version v3.4.15

2. how to get the current tag object.

The documentation has improved since I last looked but there still

Any help is appreciated.

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with this code to help it do
that.

Moving apps to screens and apps to tags

2012-04-25 Thread Gerald Klein
Hi, I was lamenting about sending apps to specific screens and tags a while
back using the right side keypad, which is more convenient for me then say
'modkey-shift 1' above the keyboard. Thats gonna take 2 hands unless you
are good at hand gymnastics, I played an instrument and I can't do it. I
finally got back to it and I tried using like 'KP_1' etc never worked for
me. So now I tried using key codes and voila! so what I have is this

This will move an app to a specific screen, using what is my right key pad
number 1, 2 or 3
though you will have to experiment as keycodes can be different. Also my
screens
from left to right ended up being 1,3,2 as below is illustrating.

awful.key({ modkey, }, #87, function (c)
awful.client.movetoscreen(c, 1) end), --screen 1
awful.key({ modkey, }, #88, function (c)
awful.client.movetoscreen(c, 3) end), --screen 2
awful.key({ modkey, }, #89, function (c)
awful.client.movetoscreen(c, 2) end), --screen 3

next thing was apps to specific tags... Now I know this should be in a
loop. I will get to that at some point but
this sends apps to a specific tag on the current screen, and combining
modkey with Mod1 which in my case is 'alt' key
you can go above 9.

for those who don't know, use xev to get your keycodes.

awful.key({ Mod1, }, #87, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][1]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #88, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][2]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #89, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][3]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #83, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][4]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #84, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][5]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #85, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][6]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #79, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][7]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #80, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][8]) end),
awful.key({ Mod1, }, #81, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][9]) end),
awful.key({ modkey, Mod1}, #90, function (c)
awful.client.movetotag(tags[c.screen][10]) end),
